Ukraine Before War - The 10 Most Beautiful Places In Ukraine

Ukraine is a gorgeous country with UNESCO World Heritage Sites, glorious cathedrals, Orthodox churches, lush forested hills, culture, and more.
Vibrant cities, ancient castles, stunning countryside, diversity of landscapes, and a welcoming attitude all help make it a special destination, regardless of its troubles.
Most of this country is open for business. The prices here are extremely cheap.
Although it's one of the biggest countries in Europe, Ukraine struggles to attract visitors.
The lack of mass tourism lends Ukraine a charm and authenticity often missing elsewhere.
Here are the 10 beautiful cities that will make you fall in love with this eastern European country.

1. Lviv - The largest city in western Ukraine and one of the most beautiful cities in the country.
2. Kyiv - The beautiful capital of Ukraine.
3. Odesa - A pretty port city on the Black Sea.
5. Kharkiv - The city is known for Freedom Square, which is one of Europe's largest squares.
6. Chernivtsi - One of the hidden gems of Western Ukraine.
7. Poltava - A city steeped in military history due to a legendary battle in the 18th century between Sweden and Russia.
8. Vorokhta - An urban-type settlement and one of the best places to visit in Ukraine
9. Uzhhorod - Known for its cherry blossom festival.
10. Zhovkva – One of the most interesting small historical towns in Ukraine.

Ukrainian BAR FOOD at 137-Year-Old Tavern in Odessa, Ukraine

???????? LEARN MORE ABOUT UKRAINE:
???? TOURS BY LOCALS:

As my final day in Ukraine slowly came to a close, I set out on one last food adventure before starting the journey home to Miami. Come with me as I check out some local attractions and enjoy some delicious Ukrainian bar food at a 137-year-old tavern in Odessa, Ukraine!

My guide Natasha and I started our evening in the central part of Odessa. It was a bright, sunny afternoon; a far cry from the rainy and overcast conditions we’d had the past couple of days.

???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH:

The first attraction we saw was the Odessa National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet, which was built by an architect from St. Petersburg. Nearby is a huge fountain!

We continued on toward the Odessa City Hall and the Monument to Alexander Pushkin along Prymorskyi Boulevard. It’s a shaded pedestrian street that reminded me of the Sea Garden in Varna, Bulgaria. There was an artist there and couples dancing!

There’s a section of the street covered by Plexiglas that shows the historical nature of the city. It’s like a small archaeological site where they’ve found Greek amphoras, Greek coins, stone tools, and more! The Greeks actually founded Odessa roughly 2,500 years ago but didn’t stay!

From there, we arrived back at the Potemkin Stairs, a set of 192 stone steps built in 1841 that lead down to the port area. You can walk up or down them, or you can ride the funicular. There are lots of craft vendors and people out enjoying them!

Then, we headed over to Vorontsov Palace and the Colonnade of Vorontsov Palace, where we got some great views of the Odessa Commercial Sea Port. The palace was built in the mid-19th century and is now open to the public.

Leading away from the palace is Tioschin Bridge, also known as Mother-In-Law Bridge, which is a pedestrian bridge built over a ravine close to the port. Near the bridge is a big display full of love locks. They used to be on the bridge, but they started to cause the bridge to sink!

From there, we walked to Derybasivska Street, the main pedestrian street in Odessa. Along it are lots of restaurants, bars, and coffee shops. There were people playing instruments and lots of people out.

We’d be having dinner at Gambrinus, which has been around since 1883. It’s an underground stone cellar-like tavern with live local music. They sell lots of popular beers as well as their own beers. I tried a lager with some croutons. The lager was malty and different from an ordinary lager!

You can buy your glass for 250 hryvnia, or about $10 USD. They also have cognac and brandy. I ordered a platter of fried goatfish and fried gobies for 250 hryvnia/$10 USD.

You take the head off the goatfish, remove the spine, and dive in. It was so meaty and the tartar sauce was perfect with it! There were lots of bones, but it was so tasty! It was perfectly fried!

The gobies were smaller and you can eat them whole, but you have to chew them carefully to break down the bones. I enjoyed a delicious amber ale with it! I couldn’t get enough of this incredible seafood. The goatfish were so unique and flavorful!

Next, they brought me an assorted platter containing a large pretzel, ribs, onion rings, French fries, chicken wings, and fish balls. I also had some vorschmack, which is a type of minced fish paste, with rye bread.

The pork ribs were incredible and had a sauce that reminded me of Chinese pork ribs. I also loved the onion rings with the tartar sauce, as well as the tender chicken wings. I also loved the crunchy fish balls with the tartar sauce!

The vorschmack was creamy and smooth. But by the time I got to it, I was full!

10 Reasons to Visit Ukraine Travel Tips

Are you considering traveling to Ukraine? Come find out 10 reasons to visit Ukraine along with some of our best travel tips to make your trip to Ukraine as enjoyable as possible.

On a personal level, Ukraine was the most pleasantly surprising country we visited this year on tour across Europe. Not knowing what to expect and not having much time to prepare we arrived in Ukraine with fresh eyes while hitting the ground running.

Overall we visited Kiev and Lviv and left wanting to explore more of Ukraine. How expensive is Ukraine? Our top 10 reasons to visit Ukraine covers accommodation, food, attractions and transportation along with a slew of other travel tips.

10 Reasons to Visit Ukraine Travel Tips

1) Ukraine is Affordable for travelers

-$15-35 per night for entire apartments using Airbnb
-Great value meals for about $5-10 per person for a full meal or less for a budget meal
-Metro tickets in Kiev only cost 5 HRV ($0.20)
-Groceries reasonably priced - we loved chocolate + wine

2) Ukraine is an Underrated Country to Visit

-We didn't encounter many other tourists - especially International visitors
-Attractions were not overrun and sometimes if we visited early enough on a weekday we had places to ourselves
-The only exception to that is churches because they're active places of worship

3) Safety

-News coverage would suggest Ukraine is unsafe but we found Kiev and Lviv to be very safe when we visited (along the border with Russia could be a different story)
-We walked around with our cameras without any issues
-No hassles while walking around
-I went jogging at night in Kyiv
-Locals are out enjoying life - playing chess in parks, eating in restaurants and using public spaces for concerts

4) Friendliness of locals in Ukraine

-Really good and friendly service at restaurants (some English spoken most of the time)
-Great AirBNB hosts who both went above and beyond to help us
-Even with language barrier smiles aplenty
-As a travel tip for Ukraine learn to read the Cyrillic alphabet

5) Traditional Ukrainian Food in Kiev and Lviv

-Good local food scene - for all price points
-Typically Ukrainian cuisine is hearty and filling
-Some of our favorite Ukrainian food includes the following:
a) varenyky (dumplings)
b) banosh (polenta, bacon and sheep's cheese)
c) deruny (potato pancakes with sauce)
d) borscht

6) Thriving International Food Scene

-Georgian cuisine
-Korean food
-Sushi
Italian style pizzas
-Pop up cafes and food trucks in parks and on street corners

7) Transportation

-awesome metro system in Kiev (grand stations and deep underground + affordable prices)
-deepest station in the world in Kyiv (5 minutes)
-great connections from airport to city center in Kyiv
-taking the train from Kiev to Lviv and it was efficient, on time and comfortable

8) Architecture in Ukraine

-interesting mix of a bit of Soviet but mostly ornate European architecture
-some parts look like they could belong in Paris or Buenos Aires and other parts are distinctly soviet
-painted in cheerful colors

9) Ukrainian Churches in Kyiv and Lviv

-Orthodox churches and monasteries in Kyiv - main attractions
-ornate and onion domes - impressive on inside and outside
-women need to cover up in Orthodox churches
-active places or prayer
-witnessed weddings in Lviv
Lviv features numerous types of churches

10) Variety and diversity of places to visit in Ukraine

-Kyiv is very different from Lviv (worth visiting both)
-We didn't get to Odessa which has been highly recommended
-Other places of potential interest include Chernivtsi, Ivano-Frankivsk and Carpathian Mountains

What are some other places in Ukraine you'd recommend visiting? Any Ukraine travel tips you think we missed? Other reasons to love Ukraine? Please let us know in the comments below.

Medieval Ukrainian MOUNTAIN FOOD - Exploring Transcarpathia + Attractions | Mukachevo, Ukraine

???????? LEARN MORE ABOUT UKRAINE:
???? TOURS BY LOCALS:
????????‍♀️ DIANA:

My adventures in southwestern Ukraine continued in the city of Mukachevo! Join me as I take you to have medieval Ukrainian mountain food of Transcarpathia and check out the attractions in Mukachevo, Ukraine!

My evening began with my guide Diana from Tours by Locals in the beautiful Transcarpathia Region of Ukraine, which is right on the border with Slovakia and Hungary.

???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH:

Our first stop was Palanok Castle, also known as Mukachevo Castle. It’s located atop a volcanic hill and has 3 parts: the low, middle, and high castle

It costs 50 hryvnia, or just $2 USD to enter the castle. It started off as a small wooden structure in the 9th century. The following century, the area belonged to Hungarian tribes. The castle reminded me of ones I’d visited in Germany.

In the Historic Exhibition are metal, stone, and clay items excavated by archaeologists. I could see arrows and tools used for farming, as well as locks, jewelry, and more.

Then, I visited the souvenir shop, where you can buy decorative plates, beads, shot glasses, a medieval gauntlet, mugs, magnets, and more.

From the castle, we drove two minutes to the city center. There are lots of coffeehouses, monuments, a promenade, a church, and the city hall there.

The promenade is lined with coffee shops, restaurants, and vendors. We saw the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St. Martin before heading to Poryadniy Gazda, a restaurant near the castle whose name translates to “a decent host.”

The restaurant is a big complex. Inside, I tried a crunchy, freshly baked cheese waffle. I could also see sausages in a case and lots of cheeses! In the dining area, we had a VIP table. It felt like we were in a giant tent because of the cloth draped across the ceiling. Along the walls are shelves full of jars of pickles!

I started with some coffee cream beer and some of their homemade vodka. The berry vodka tasted a bit nutty, and the manager invited me into the kitchen, and then we checked out the brewery inside the restaurant!

In the on-site brewery makes 6 types of unfiltered beer. Their 4% blonde ale had a wheat-like flavor and super cloudy. The lager was nice and crisp, and their golden ale was fruity and creamy! Their Witbier was so creamy and light.

Then the owner and brewmaster, Michael, gave me an apron and let me pour my own Coffee Cream Beer from the tank for dinner.

At my table, I had bohrach (a pork rib stew with carrots and potatoes with pickles and chili flakes on the side. We also had Transcarpathian pork sausages, bacon, baked potatoes, and fried onions.

The bohrach was so meaty, tasty, and fatty! The ribs fell right off the bone. Then, I added the chili flakes for some added heat. It was such a hearty winter soup!

The sausages were super juicy and thin, and so tasty. Next was blood sausage containing a bit of rice, which was very soft and fell apart! The pork belly had a glazy sauce on it, and the smoky sausage was also really nice!

The baked potatoes with cheese were also really nice, as was the buttered toast. Then, I tried a cheese platter with jam! Meanwhile, the cream ale was very creamy and a fantastic dark unfiltered beer!

From there, Diana, Michael, and I headed down into the cellar, which was freezing. They had lots of jars of pickles and a six-year-old bottle of beer. It’s exclusive and was made for a beer festival.

It was like a delicious brown ale. What an incredible day. Michael is such a character and so fun and hospitable. You have to meet this guy when you visit Mukachevo!
