Java is one of Indonesia’s most diverse and beautiful islands. In this travel video, I show you 10 of my favorite places to visit. From surreal mountain landscapes and volcanoes to bustling cities, from tranquil fishing villages to historic temples set among green lush rice fields.
I traveled through Asia for a number of years, and visited Java in 2017. This short travel documentary aims to show you my personal top 10 places on this magnificent island. Thanks for watching, and feel free to leave comments below!

Here’s a brief overview of the content in this video (which can be used as a travel guide):
We begin this journey in Jakarta, the nation’s capital, and one of Asia’s largest cities. The city can feel overwhelming at first sight, but there are some great areas to visit, including museums, historic neighborhoods, and modern shopping malls.
After Jakarta, we travel to Yogyakarta, the cultural heartland of Java. It’s a much more relaxed place to walk around, and provides a more traditional perspective of Indonesia, with music performances (gamelan songs) and shadow puppet theatre. I also visit local farmers in the countryside around the city. Most are growing rice in green paddy fields, and are happy to show you around.
Around Yogyakarta you will find two of Indonesia’s most stunning temples. Borobudur is a Buddhist temple, and easily one of the most impressive historic structures in Asia. Prambanan is of Hindu origin, and its architecture is very different from Borobudur.
Mount Bromo is arguably one of Indonesia’s most famous volcanoes, and it’s actually possible to get up on the ridge, to get a peek into its crater. The next destination is Pangandaran, a peaceful seaside town with some beautiful beaches and powerful waves, and a popular holiday destination.
Semarang is a busy city with some beautiful historic architecture, including the church which was built in Dutch colonial times. The Christian minority still uses this church. After Semarang, we travel to Kawah Ijen, a surreal volcanic crater where miners are collecting blocks of sulfur. In some moments, this place felt apocalyptic.
In the fishing port of Banyuwangi (also the gateway to Bali) you will find some spectacular fishing boats, with bright colors and classic design. The town’s atmosphere is friendly, and it’s nice to walk around visiting some of the markets. The region around Banyuwangi is well suited for agriculture, and is used for cacao, rubber, and coffee production.
In the lush green mountains around Wonosobo, you will find some beautiful tea plantations, that are open to visit. We finish the journey in Surabaya, an important business and trading hub in Indonesia. It might not boast a lot of ‘tourist attractions’, but it’s a nice place to visit. The main mosque is a highlight, where the local Muslim population comes to pray. It provides an interesting view into the main religion in Indonesia, Islam. On Fridays, this area turns into an ‘open air restaurant’, with street food sellers offering their finest dishes.

Before heading to mount Ijen, we spent a day exploring the beautiful Banyuwangi in East Java, Indonesia. This was one of our favorite days traveling in Indonesia. We took a scooter ride through gorgeous scenery to Jagir Waterfall, then to a beach. This was one of our favorite travel experiences! East Java is so beautiful! It was fun getting lost with a scooter.

Red Island Beach, Banyuwangi, East Java, Indonesia - Best Travel Destination
One more world-class surfing destination presented in Banyuwangi, not the G-land (Plengkung) but this named Red Island Beach. This beach has advantages compared to G-land that does not have a lot of rock like so Plengkung Red Island safer beach for surfers including beginners. Red Island beach which includes part of the coast in the south of East Java could be reached within three hours by four-wheeled vehicles or motorcycles from the city of Banyuwangi , or approximately 60 km. The location is close to residential areas in the village Sumberagung, District Pesanggaran. The access road to this place fairly smoothly so that makes it a tourist destination Banyuwangi citizens. The Red Island Beach obviously the main thing is to play surfing but for local or domestic tourists, the beach is often a family recreation destination. In some places the corner of the hill often seen paragliding enthusiasts in action. If you are interested in playing smoothly, it can be rented daddy full day at a cost of Rp 25,000, - to Rp 50,000. Top Destinations Indonesia: Banyuwangi 2019
Banyuwangi is a surprisingly varied and affordable travel destination on the island of Java Indonesia. This was a short weekend trip that was almost unplanned as the kids still have some holiday time. Main attractions include the Savanah like Baluran National Park easily accessible by car from the city, Bangsring coral reef and fish conservation, the Ijen crater with its famous blue fire (unfortunately due to time limitation we could not make the visit - hopefully next time). Other attractions which we couldn't do due to time includes; Kalibendo waterfalls, Pulau Merah Beach (International surfing destination), Green bay and Plengkung Beach are other surfing destinations. Accommodation was at the Dialoog hotel which is a 4 star hotel and one of the best in the area. There are daily flights from Jakarta and visitors can easily cross over to Bali with a Ferry.

Banyuwangi literally means Aromatic Water, which is associated with the local legend. Being the east-most city on Java, this is where the dawn first rises in the morning throwing its welcoming rays over Java, this lush green but also most densely populated island. Banyuwangi Regency extends over an area of 5,800 square km, comprising southern beaches brushed by the Indian Ocean, to impressive Mt Raung that stands at 3,282 meters and Mt Merapi at 2,800 meters above sea level.
The town of Banyuwangi is the gateway to your explorations to watch wild animals roam freely in the reserve of Alas Purwo, the oldest game reserve on Java, go trekking through the savannah of Baluran, or find secluded and untouched beaches at Pulau Merah or G-Land, and travel to Sukamade Beach where turtles come to hatch their eggs. Mountain climbers can hike up from Banyuwangi to the stunning Ijen Crater and be amazed by blue flames that spring out among the yellow sulphurous rocks, cut and gathered manually by traditional miners.
Get There
To visit the many attractions around Banyuwangi it is best to rent a car at the airport or through your hotel or travel agent. Best make sure to have a sturdy and comfortable vehicle especially when you plan to visit mountain regions or savannah, although generally speaking, roads around here are good.
If you wish to travel overland from Bali, catch the ferry at Gilimanuk port, on the western tip of Bali which sails to the port of Ketapang at Banyuwangi. You can of course, also travel by car from Surabaya or any other large city in East Java to Banyuwangi.
Indonesia’s second largest city, Surabaya is connected directly from abroad by a number of international airlines. You can then connect on Garuda Indonesia or Lion Air flights from Surabaya to Banyuwangi’s Blimbingsari Airport. There are also daily flights from Bali to Banyuwangi.
The city of Banyuwangi is located around 239 km east of Surabaya, capital of the province of East Java. You can travel to Banyuwangi by car or by train.

How to Get from Bali to East Java by Private Car and Ferry
The fastest way overland (and sea) to get from Bali to Banyuwangi is hiring a driver and car to take you directly from your Bali hotel to your Banyuwangi hotel. The ferry that runs only sea route from Bali to Java, from Gilimanuk ferry port in West Bali to Ketapang port in East Java, is a vehicle ferry. Your hotel can arrange a driver. The entire journey should take around 4 -5 hours; the ferry takes 45 minutes and the drive from Ketapang to Banyuwangi first Trip visit Ijen Crater is around 1 hour.
How to Get from Bali to Java East Java by Plane
The easiest way, of course, is to take the short (1 hour 25 minutes) flight from Jakarta to Banyuwangi. There are currently eight flights a day with Garuda, Citilink, Lion, and PT. Nam Air

Plengkung Beach (G-Land), Banyuwangi, East Java, Indonesia - Best Travel Destination
Plengkung coast, or better known as the G-Land, is located in the coastal area of the National Park Alas Purwo , Banyuwangi , East Java. Plengkung can be achieved for a half day journey overland from Bali. Plengkung beach can also be reached by chartered boat from Bali. Plengkung beach is located in the southeastern part of the island of Java, is in the group of the southern coast of Java, which deal directly with the Indian Ocean, so the beach Plengkung including large choppy coast. The large waves generated by low-pressure system coming from the south ( Antarctica ). Plengkung beach is also located on the east side of the bay Grajagan, then from the right side Plengkung Beach has waves more dominant. Long waves Plengkung elongated shape, height, and high speed. Plengkung beach waves also formed a nearly perfect wave tube so that it becomes a favorite sport enthusiast surfing. Offshore wind that blows in Plengkung occurs between April and September. This causes most large waves occurred in recent months. At these times the waves come in stages, each lasting for several days, with a span of a few days between each wave. Waves tend to be bigger and better at high tide, so the best time to plan a surf trip was a week after the full moon or new moon, because in these times of high waves occur during a half-day. Enchanting Indonesia - City of #Banyuwangi, East Java
Banyuwangi is a small city in the easternmost part of Java island. It is well connected with other major cities in Java and also it is very close to Bali.
Usually travellers go to Banyuwangi for a night stop to do the hike to Kawah Ijen, the largest acid crater lake.
when I visited I had some spare time to explore the surrounding areas and it was such an authentic experience. Except Kawah Ijen, there were not many tourists around and it was great to spend time, being a part of the small town local life.
