Banjarmasin, The City on a Thousand Rivers, South Kalimantan, Indonesia - Best Travel Destination
Banjarmasin is the capital of South Kalimantan, Indonesia. It is located on a delta island near the junction of the Barito and Martapura rivers. As a result, Banjarmasin is sometimes called the River City. Banjarmasin has an abundance of wide and mighty rivers, which have always played a significant role in the Banjarese’ (the indigenous ethnic group of Banjarmasin) way of life. To this very day, every morning there are floating markets where farmers and merchants ply their goods on boats to trade. This has always been a farmers’ market and it’s interesting to see the genuine river-based way of life. The rivers are also used as main venues for boat races and other festivities. The town’s main attractions are the suburbs that are traversed by canals, where much of the city's commerce takes place on the water. The most notable of these river markets is the Muara Kuin Floating Market located on the Barito River, on the estuary of the Kuin River. Starting as early as 04.00 am, the floating market is the place to see the traffic of all kinds of boats laden with bananas, shrimps, fish, yams, spinach, coconut, incandescent spices and chilies, buckets of fuzzy rambutans, and whatever other fruit are in season. Maneuvering their boats with dexterity and precision, since the boats are constantly wobbled by the river’s waves, traders exchange goods and money. This unique frenzy is usually over by 09.00 am. The Banjarese have a unique way of building their houses and other structures to be in harmony with nature. There are at least 12 types of traditional Banjarese houses, with some still standing handsomely today. In Kampung Kraton are still remnants of the old Banjarmasin Palace which was destroyed by the Dutch colonial government. There is also the Sultan Suriansyah Mosque which is known as the first mosque built in South Kalimantan where the royal tombs are laid. Another fascinating structure is the Museum Waja Sampai Ka Puting which houses some of the historical collections in the struggle of the people against Dutch colonialism. The building of the Museum itself is an old and genuine Banjarese traditional house in the Bubungan Tinggi style (one of the 12 styles and the most representative). To most Indonesians, Banjarmasin is synonymous with diamonds and precious stones from Martapura. If you are interested in precious stones then Banjarmasin is the city to head to. We Never Expected A Day Like This in Banjarmasin (South Borneo)
After two years, I am finally back in Banjarmasin, the capital city of South Kalimantan (Kalimantan is the Indonesian part of the vast Borneo island).
We did not really plan anything coming here as we came to visit our dad and celebrate his birthday whilst exploring the island more. We also did not expect much with the regional lockdown announced a few days before our flight to this city.
The amazing thing is that every time we decide to head out for a drive around Banjarmasin, we always unexpectedly find gems scattered around the city, as well as a bizarre abandoned house. So here's a glimpse of our little adventure around the city of Banjarmasin.
I should also note that aside from the places we visited on this video, we also tried out some of the coffeeshops around the city that serves really great coffee and food which I did not document. Actually tasted one of the best latte ever (in my opinion) in this cafe called Monocle and I have to somehow include it on here!

Location : Kota Banjarmasin, Kalimantan Selatan, Indonesia.
Welcome to the city of bridges, rivers, canals and boats. It may be the Dutch’s very first base in Borneo hundreds of years ago with ever growing industrialization especially petroleum, plywood and the very popular ‘tikar lampit’ but certain things do not change at all – their farming life, river transportation and the floating/stilted houses along the banks of its Barito River and Martapura River. It is like time stood still for these simple Banjarese people. Some belian stilts might have buckled with age but the Banjar’s traditional life stays solid as ever and that is what makes the most ancient city of Borneo 700,000 people so unique.
Strolling the streets of Banjarmasin after dinner upon arrival, we bumped into Mr Oyonk a Dayak Ngaju from Muara Teweh. After chatting with him over ojek fees, he volunteered to give us a city tour for the next day. Little did we know that the next few days our lives in Kalsel would be in his hands and good hands too. We visited the tourism office to meet his friend, the old mosque in Banjarmasin and the interesting ‘Pasar Lama’ or old street market. Let our photos tell you more stories.
