Central Thailand: Bang Pa-In Royal Palace

#Thailand #ayutthaya #travel

Located about 50km (30 miles) north of the Grand Palace in Bangkok and 13km (8 miles) south of Ayutthaya, the royal palace at Bang Pa-In was originally constructed in 1632 by King Prasat Thong as a summer palace but fell into disuse with the fall of the Kingdom of Ayutthaya in 1767. It then became overgrown until King Mongkut (Rama IV) began to restore the site in the mid-19th century and most of the present buildings you see today were constructed between 1872 and 1889 by King Chulalongkorn (Rama V). The palace is divided into 2 zones: one is inner zone that the royal family use as a resting place; while the other is the outer zone that is open to visitors.

In this video I show you round the different buildings that form the palace that is open to the public as well as taking a cable car to an island in the Chao Phraya River in order to visit a unique temple.

NOTE: In order to visit the palace you are required to wear something that covers your legs i.e. trousers or a long skirt. If you arrive without then you can hire a sarong that you can wrap around your legs.

BANG PA IN SUMMER PALACE IN AYUTTHAYA | AYUTTHAYA ATTRACTIONS

Step back in time and enjoy a tour of the historical city of Ayutthaya visiting temples, ancient ruins, Buddha images, and the historical park that surrounds it. You will get plenty of time to explore this fascinating city that was once the capital of Siam, including the famous Buddha head nestled in tree roots and the large reclining Buddha that lies in an open meadow. After a delicious lunch at a local restaurant, continue visiting stunning historical sites and temples. On your way back to Bangkok visit Bang Pa-In, a beautifully maintained palace that was the summer residence of King Rama IV, with some unusual European style buildings inspired by his travels and a picturesque Thai pavilion in the middle of the lake.

Divine Seat of Personal Freedom (Aisawan Thiphya-At). The only Thai-style building in the palace, this beautiful pavilion sitting in the middle of a lake has been designated as the archetype of the Thai pavilion (sala Thai), a national symbol of Thailand. The statue standing in the middle represents Rama V and was erected by his son.

Heavenly Light (Wehart Chamrun) was built in 1889 by the Chinese Chamber of Commerce. It's full of red, gold, dark woods and inlaid mother of pearl.
Don't forget to catch the stupendous dragon sculpture inside carved from camel bone

Built by the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in 1889, this opulent Chinese-style palace is also another standout, full of red, gold, dark woods and inlaid mother of pearl. Also open to visitors, be sure to catch the stupendous dragon sculpture inside carved from camel bone.

Exhibition Hall (Saphakhan Ratchaprayun). A colonial-style two-floor building originally built for the King's brothers. The building now houses a small museum covering the history of the palace, and makes a good first stop on a tour of the area.

Memorial to Queen Sunanda Kumariratana. Built in memory of Queen Sunanda in 1881 (see box), this simple marble monument has a slightly ungrammatical but touching English dedication by King Chulalongkorn himself.

Bang Pa-In Royal Palace พระราชวังบางปะอิน - Ayutthaya Thailand

A few miles down the Chao Phraya River from Ayutthaya is the Bang Pa-In Summer Palace.

The site was first used by the royal court
as a summer retreat in the 17th century. The Palace was destroyed with the fall of the Kingdom of Ayutthaya and was restored by King Rama IV in the mid-19th century. Most of the buildings that exist today date from the
reign of King Rama V, who regularly spent his
summers there. The structures represent a variety of architectural styles, set in a large park around ponds and waterways.

Bang Pa-In Royal Palace พระราชวังบางปะอิน, also known as the Summer Palace, is a palace complex formerly used by the Thai kings.

King Prasat Thong constructed the original complex  in 1632, but it fell into disuse and became overgrown in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It was unused until King Mongkut began to restore the site in the mid-19th century. Most of the present buildings were constructed between 1872 and 1889 by King Chulalongkorn.

The palace is well worth a visit to see the beautiful buildings. Only the museum is open to view inside unfortunately. Even with that the complex should still be on the list of places to see around Ayutthaya.

Amazing Thailand #5: Bang Pa-In Palace, Ayutthaya Province

Bang Pa-In Royal Palace (พระราชวังบางปะอิน), also known as the Summer Palace, is a palace complex formerly used by the Thai kings. The palace is located on the Chao Phraya River bank in Bang Pa-In district, Ayutthaya Province.

King Prasat Thong originally constructed the complex in 1632, and though it lay empty and overgrown throughout the late 18th and early 19th century, King Mongkut began to restore the site in the mid-1800s. Most of the present buildings at the Bang Pa-In Palace complex were constructed between 1872 and 1889 by King Chulalongkorn.

The facilities include vast gardens and landscaping, Wehart Chamrunt (Heavenly Light), a Chinese-style royal palace and throne room; the Warophat Phiman (Excellent and Shining Heavenly Abode), a royal residence; Ho Withun Thasana (Sages' Lookout), a brightly-painted lookout tower; and the Aisawan Thiphya-Art (Divine Seat of Personal Freedom), a pavilion constructed in the middle of a pond.

Bang Pa-In Palace remains largely open to visitors, as King Bhumibol Adulyadej and his family use it only rarely for banquets and special occasions (the royal family lives in Bangkok). The palace is located on route from Bangkok to the ancient city of Ayuttaya and many tour companies stop there on the way to Ayuttaya.

On the next video we arrive in the ancient city of Ayutthaya!
