We take the Crazy slow boat from CHIANG RAI, Thailand to Luang Prabang, Laos. This is a 2 day slow boat ride along the famous Mekong River, stopping off in Pak Beng on the way and is a scenic way to travel cross the border from Thailand to Laos. A journey from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang by boat. We're able to take you on a 2-day boat trip through the Mekong River moving through some spectacular nature. BORDER TOWN LAOS HUAY XAI- WILD LAOS!
Huay Xai is a small town on the border of Thailand and Laos. From Huay Xai you can go to Luang Prabang by a sleeper bus which is what we did. Spending our first 24 hours in Laos here immersed us right into Laos culture with how remote and authentic this town is.

After spending 2 months in Thailand and exploring what the north of Thailand has to offer, we are leaving Chiang Rai and taking a bus to the Laos border (Friendship bridge)
In order to to Loas from Chaing Rai, we needed to hop onto a local bus at bus terminal 1 and then get dropped off on the side of the road, where a tuk tuk will take us to the boarder. This will be the first time we take a tuk tuk to a boarder. We did not know what to expect at the Loas boarder but it seemed pretty simple to cross. Once we were stamped out of Thailand, we headed over the Mekong river towards Laos. The Mekong river is the
th longest river in the world.
Once we arrived at the Loas boarder control, we got our visa on arrival, and hopped onto the back of a van and headed to Huay Xai, A little town on the boarder of North of Thailand. We are super excited to explore Laos as we have many activities planned in this country and i guess this will be our first impressions of Laos.
Just a hint, this country is blowing us away!

Luang Phrabang is a city in Laos; it was formerly the capital of a kingdom of the same name and is also the name of a province of which it is the capital. The city of Luang Phrabang is in north central Laos, on the Mekong River about 425 km north of Vientiane. It has a population of about 16,000 people. Until the communist takeover in 1975, it was the royal capital, the seat of the king of Laos. Today it is a UNESCO World heritage site.
Speed boat depart 9am - 11am stop rest 20 minutes - 12pm stop for lunch - 3.30pm arrived Ban HouayXai.
Ban HouayXay Laos, the town lies on the Mekong river opposite Chiang Khong in Thailand being the northernmost border crossing between the two countries. This short film is taken upriver from Luang Prabang to Houay Xai. (A busride would have taken 24 hours+, a slow boat will make it in 2 or 3 days and a speed boat makes it in 6-7 hours.) Our trip took 6 hours and we were stiff and sore by the time we arrived, but I must admit I enjoyed it. The boat is something like a surf board with a car engine bolted on the back :o ! Quite exciting actually :). Nevertheless you got to be ready for this as it will be very tight, uncomfortable and noisy. On top of that you'll be made to wear a helmet and a life jacket. The good swimmer should be ok with this kind of travel but those who don't swim, I would say the life jacket won't be so helpfull to you in that oversized giant Mekong river especially when you can notice it's strong current and only God knows what is beneath that river? :p . At the end of video 2, you will be able to see how we checkout from Houay Xai, border of Laos into Chiang Khong Thailand.
**The 2 ways to travel between Luang Prabang and Huay Xai, slow boat and speed boat.
1) Slow boat: (2days) tickets cost 200,000 kip if bought at the official ticket office near the peer. Travel agents in town will charge a little expensive e.g. from 240,000 to 265,000.
2) Speed boat: (6 hours) and travel agents in LP will sell the tickets for 320,000-370,000Kip, you will need a minivan to take you the 10km north to the fast boat pier.
**note** do not miss the Mae Sai border to Myanmar (northwest from Chiang Khong), visit the market there, it's really cool. :) I got my camping tent there for an extremely cheap price. Couldn't find it cheaper anywhere else here or even Thailand. Cheaper by half from the normal market price.

Today we took a shuttle from our Hotel in Chiang Rai to the boarder of Laos. Once across the boarder in Huay Xai, we boarded the Mekong Smile Cruise to take us on a journey down the beautiful Mekong River, stopping overnight in Pak Beng before continuing on to Luang Prabang. The luxury Mekong River Cruise would take two days and this vlog is PART 1, so be sure to stick around for PART 2 coming up.

* Von Chiang Rai in Nordthailand ging es morgens um 5:30 Uhr mit dem Taxi nach Amphoe Chiang Khong wo wir vom Luang Say Team empfangen wurden, über die Grenze nach Ban Houayxay geleitet und auf das Boot gebracht wurden. Ab ca. 9 Uhr ging es dann per Boot sehr entspannt den Mekong entlang durch eine tolle Landschaft mit tollen Aussichten. Leckere Verpflegung gab es an Bord und eine Besichtigung eines laotischen Minderheiten-Dorfes war Teil des Programmes. Beendet wurde der schöne und entspannte Tag in der Luang Say Lodge bei Pakbeng mit lokaler Tanzvorführung, leckerem Buffet in Übernachtung in sympathischen Apartments.
** Starting from Chiang Rai in Northern Thailand at 5:30 am going by taxi to Amphoe Chiang Khong awaited of the Luang Say Team to get transferred over the Laotian Border to Ban Houayxay on the boat. Cruise started at approx. 9 am floating very relaxed along the Mekong river with beautiful scenery and views. Lunch, snacks and drinks are available on board and the visit of a village of Laotian minorities was part of the program. Arriving at Pakbeng, staying at the Luang Say Lodge with local dance show and dinner was a nice end of the day.
*** Empezando desde Chiang Rai en el Norte de Thailandia a las 5:30 am, viajando en taxi a Amphoe Chiang Khong para encontrar el Luang Say Team. Ellos estaban arreglando el transfer al barco en Ban Houayxay, passando la frontera de Laos. Como a las 9 am flotando muy relajante en el rio Mekong y didfrutando el ambiente y las vistas hermosas. Una visita de un pueblo de ethnias era parte de programma también. Al fin llegando a Pakbeng estuvimos pasando la noche en apartamentos del Luang Say Lodge con una show de bailes locales y una cena muy rica.

The village is situated at the confluence of the Ruak River and the Mekong River which forms the tripoint border of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos. This location has enabled it to be marketed to tourists as the heart of the Golden Triangle (Southeast Asia).
