The Balangiga Bells of Eastern Samar // FINALLY HOME after 117 years

The Balangiga bells are three church bells that were taken by the United States Army from the Church of San Lorenzo de Martir in Balangiga, Eastern Samar, Philippines, as war trophies after reprisals following the Balangiga massacre in 1901 during the Philippine–American War. One church bell was in the possession of the 9th Infantry Regiment at Camp Red Cloud, their base in South Korea, while two others were on a former base of the 11th Infantry Regiment at Francis E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

People representing the Catholic Church in the Philippines, the Philippine government, and the residents of Balangiga had sought to recover the bells since the late 1950s, but their efforts were met with frustration for decades. Progress in negotiations was made in 2018, and the bells finally returned to the Philippines on 11 December 2018, after 117 years.

‘Top 10 Favorite Islands in the World 2023' Philippines ????????

‘Top 10 Favorite Islands in the World 2023' Philippines ????????

Boracay ([bɔˈrakaɪ]; often locally shortened to Bora) is a resort island in the Western Visayas region of the Philippines, located 0.8 kilometers (0.50 mi) off the northwest coast of Panay. It has a total land area of 10.32 square kilometers (3.98 sq mi), under the jurisdiction of three barangays in Malay, Aklan, and had a population of 37,802 in 2020.[2]

Apart from its white sand beaches, Boracay is also famous for being one of the world's top destinations for relaxation.[4][5] As of 2013, it was emerging among the top destinations for tranquility and nightlife.[6]

Boracay was awarded as the 2012 Best Island in the World by the international travel magazine Travel + Leisure.[7][8] In 2014, the resort island was at the top of the Best Islands in the World list published by the international magazine Condé Nast Traveler.[9] In 2016, Boracay headed the magazine's list of Top 10 destinations to watch.[10]

In April 2018, the Philippine government under former president Rodrigo Duterte decreed a six-month closure of the island for tourists to undertake major renovation works, especially of the sewage system, which had become obsolete and insufficient.[11] The island was administered by the Boracay Inter-agency Task Force during the closure, [a] then it re-opened in October 2018, with a set of new rules meant to address a variety of issues

Tourism came to the island beginning sometime in the 1970s.[27][28] In 1970, the movies Nam's Angels (released in the U.S. as The Losers) and Too Late the Hero used filming locations on Boracay and Caticlan.[29] There was an influx of Western tourists after German writer Jens Peter called it paradise on Earth in his book about the Philippines in 1978.[30][31] In the 1980s, the island became popular as a budget destination for backpackers.[21] By the 1990s, Boracay's beaches were being acclaimed as the best in the world.[32] However, in 1997, tourist arrivals to the resort island dropped 60 percent due to the increase of coliform bacteria from poor sewage and septic systems on the island.

Exploring Hernani Eastern Samar // We found this AMAZING COVE

Hernani is a fifth class municipality in the province of Eastern Samar, Philippines. According to the 2015 census, it has a population of 8,573 people.

It was formerly called Nag-as, after the name of the river flowing southeast of the town center.

---- CANHUGAS NATURE PARK -----

If you’ve been to several white sand beaches and you find the unruffled waters tedious and boring, perhaps the big waves at Canhugas Nature Park will fascinate you with its perfect locale!
Now, let’s take a peek of this incredible local spot!

Location: Hernani, Eastern Samar (More or less 3 hours from Tacloban City)

An impressive spectacle! Gigantic waves crushing onto large rock formations mark this place as an extraordinary tourist destination.

Climbing up the walls of these hefty rocks will give you a phenomenal setting, a beautiful backdrop.

Don’t forget to bring your HD cameras as photography could be one of great deals here!

Fresh from the sea! Just in every rock formation is a natural-made pool. Water comes from the strong ocean waves hammering the rocks, flowing to the pool terraces.

Salty blue falls! Sturdy waves create waterfalls which flow into a deep hole where waves also came crushing through, crafting a view of natural features that is ‘bluish-ly exquisite.’

---- GUINDUYANAN COVE ----
Ginduyanan Cove is a newly discovered paradise right after Canhugas Nature Park which is both located in Hernani, Eastern Samar.

EASTERN SAMAR- The Gateway to the Philippine Discovery

Eastern Samar is famous in Philippine history is Homonhon Island off the coast of Guiuan, the province’s southern-most town, facing both the Pacific Ocean and the Leyte Gulf where Magellan first landed. Guiuan by itself is a quaint town composed of several Island-Barangays, each with its own story to tell. Sulangan is a Pilgrim center of St. Anthony of Padua; Tubabao Island played host to the Russian Refugees in the 1930’s; and Calico-an Island is the surfing capital of Eastern Visayas.Going up north brings you to Borongan City, the capital of the province with its rich tradition in culinaria and literature. A hike through the Borongan-Llorente Closed-canopy Forest, the largest rainforest left intact in the whole country is a challenge to surmount.Taft is the home of the Philippine Eagle with a sanctuary serving as its natural habitat – a wildlife facility where one can study birds. In the towns facing Leyte Gulf, one can visit Balangiga, the place of the one of the bloodiest encounters in the Filipino-American War. Nearby is the town of Lawaan where the majestic Amandaraga Falls, the tallest waterfalls in the country, and its 4 sister falls reside.

The Return of the Balangiga Bells

The Balangiga Bells are a set of three historic bells taken by American soldiers as war trophies during the Philippine-American War in 1901. For over a century, the bells remained in the possession of the United States, causing significant controversy and resentment among Filipinos.

However, in 2018, the bells were finally returned to the Philippines in a ceremony attended by both Filipino and American officials. The return of the Balangiga Bells is seen as a significant step towards reconciliation between the two countries, and a symbol of the enduring friendship between the Filipino and American people.

In this video, we will talk about the historical and cultural significance of the famous Balangiga Bells.
