Exploring Chufut-Kale near Bakhchisarai, Ukraine
Having been settled for more than 1000 years, the fortress cave town of Chufut-Kale now exists as a reminder of Crimea's past. It is the most accessible of the cave cities in the region and is a great place to visit as you tour about Ukraine. Many of the buildings are completely run down but there are some which are quite well maintained, including a couple kenesas, the Karaite version of a synagogue. For 600+ year old buildings they are very well maintained and accessible.
Scrabble up the path and look down on what the city once was or stay on the main paths, peering in to the windows of the houses, gathering places and store rooms. Oh, and the views down into the valley are incredible, too.

Poor Ukraine; how things have changed in 10 years. We continue past Pushkin's Fountain of Tears; lavishly decorated rooms; and Harem where the poor women spent their life unless summoned by their lord and master for a night of fun.

Chufut-Kale is a national monument of Crimean Karaite culture and Tatar fortress in Crimea, near Bakhchisaray. Its name is Crimean Tatar and Turkish for Jewish Fortress
Chufut Kale is mentioned in the Soviet scientific literature, as well as in the works of Karaite authors in Russian language from the second half of 19th century to the post-Soviet epoch including Seraya Shapshal's publications.
Khan Palace in Bakhchisaray
It’s no big deal these days to see a new building or construction being erected by people and architects from various countries and nationalities. That’s exactly what happened back in the 15th century, when Khan’s Palace was build by Italian, Iran, Turkish, Ukrainian and Russian craftsmen. This is why the whole complex has many different styles and appearances.
Khan’s Palace was built as the residence of the Giray dynasty that reigned over the Crimean Khanate. For two and a half centuries (from 1530’s to 1783) the Bakhchisaray palace served as the centre of political, spiritual, and cultural life for the Crimean Tatars. Unfortunately, the palace has not survived in its original form. It was burned by troops of Field Marshal Munich after taking Bakhchisaray in 1736. After this fire, the palace was rebuilt in an even more luxurious state. However, after the annexation of Crimea to Russia, numerous repairs and alterations began and the unique oriental flavour was lost. Restorations were made in 1960 and with great effort the palace became closer to its original look than it had been for hundreds of years. A museum complex includes the Museum of History and Culture of the Crimean Tatars, an Art Museum, an Exhibition of Weapons and Firearms, and the Sary-Guzel Leisure Complex.
To get inside the palace from the main street (Lenina) - cross Churuk-Su River by the bridge and you’ll find yourself right in front of a gate that leads into a wide, stone paved courtyard. Here locals will offer to dress you in clothing of the Crimean khans, their wives, or concubines. The oldest surviving part of the palace is the portal of iron doors in the Embassy courtyard. Through these doors ambassadors would enter Khan’s apartment. Walking around the complex of the palace you will see a courtyard with two fountains: The Golden Fountain (Magbuz) and the Fountain of Tears. We do not know how much you are familiar with Russian literature, but we cannot fail to mention what guides usually say. The Fountain of Tears owes its universal fame and popularity to Alexander Pushkin, who wrote “The Fountain of Bakhchisaray” poem. The ladies’ part of the Palace, the harem, is also open to visitors. Wives, concubines, and female relatives of the Khan lived here. A family cemetery of the former rulers of Crimea is located in the nearby Bijuk-Khan-Jami mosque. The Bakhchisaray Khan Palace has recently begun the process to join the UNESCO World Heritage List. Tours to the Chufut-Kale cave city can be organised in the Palace’s ticket office.

Чуфут-Кале 4к Крым (Бахчисарай) / Chufut-Kale 4k Crimea (Bakhchisarai)
Чуфу́т-Кале́ (укр. Чуфут-Кале, крымскотат. Çufut Qale) или Кырк-Ор (крымскотат. Qırq Or)— средневековый город-крепость в Крыму, родовая крепость известной крымской правительницы Джанике, расположена на горном плато в 2,5 км к востоку от Бахчисарая. Скалистые склоны достаточно круты, лишь с одной стороны к плоской вершине проложена пешеходная тропа. Наивысшая точка — 581 м.
На месте Кырк-Ора, предположительно, существовал византийский город, возникший примерно в V—VI веках как укреплённое поселение на границе византийских владений. Есть версия, что его укрепления строились византийскими инженерами в два этапа (между 530/550 и 560/580 гг.) для защиты стратегически важных дефиле Марьям-Дере и Ашлама-Дере, и усиления обороны дальних подступов к Херсону, однако прямых упоминаний города до 1253 года не существует.
Впервые город упоминается французским миссионером и путешественником Рубруком в 1253 году как Кырк-Ер (с тюркского языка — «сорок замков»), вплоть до 17 века в отношении города употреблялось исключительно название Кырк-Ор и другие, схожие с ним.
В 1298—1299 годах Кырк-Ор был ограблен эмиром Ногаем. В XIII—XIV веках город был центром небольшого княжества, находившегося в вассальной зависимости от правителей Крымского Юрта Золотой Орды. Начиная с XIV века в городе было разрешено селиться караимам, и с XVII века они, возможно, составляли уже большую часть населения города. Способствовали этому ограничения на их проживание в других городах Крымского ханства.

В этом выпуске мы побываем в изюминке Крыма - Бахчисарайском дворце. Город в предгорном районе Крыма, в 30 км к юго-западу от Симферополя. Название означает «цветущий сад» или «город-сад». Бахчисарай – это райский уголок на Земле, который больше известен не как курорт, а как исторический и архитектурный памятник с богатой культурой и национальными традициями. Посмотрим как жил Хан и его семья. Увидим спрятанные фонтаны. А так же найдем очень старый танк, говорящий нам об ожесточенных боях в этих местах 1941 - 1945 годах.
Ханский дворец в Бахчисарае — одна из самых ярких достопримечательностей Крыма, единственная в своём роде резиденция крымско-татарских правителей, а сегодня — огромный музейный комплекс, входящий в историко-культурный заповедник.
Затем нам предстоит увидеть пещерный мужской монастырь.

Среди красивейших природных красот крымской земли и мощных скал сокрыт великолепный белоснежный Свято-Успенский пещерный монастырь. Бахчисарайский Свято-Успенский мужской монастырь в Крыму – одно из самых популярных паломнических мест, с долгой историей существования и туманным прошлым, овеянным преданиями и легендами. тот крымский монастырь всегда почитался, его уважительно звали «Лаврой». Нужно отметить, что даже крымские ханы, которые исповедовали мусульманство, не раз приходили в ночное время к иконе Богородицы, чтобы испросить благословение на удачу в трудных делах.

Bachtschissaraj (auf krimtatarisch Bağçasaray) was in etwa Palast des Gartens bedeutet ist eine tatarische Stadt in der Autonomen Republik Krim, etwa 30 km von der (Halb)Inselhautstadt Simferopol entfernt.
In Bachtschissaraj steht der Khans-Palast, von dem aus einst das Khanat Krim regiert wurde. Der Gebäudekomplex, an dessen Bau vom 16. bis zum 18. Jahrhundert iranische, türkische, russische und ukrainische Handwerker und Baumeister beteiligt waren, zeigt eine Mischung aus verschiedenen Baustilen. Er beherbergt den Tränenbrunnen, der von Alexander Puschkin in einem berühmten Poem besungen wird.
Unweit von Bachtschyssaraj liegt die Höhlenstadt Tschufut-Kale (Çufut Qale, Чуфут Кале), die im 10. Jahrhundert gegründet wurde. Ferner befindet sich auf dem Steinplateau von Tschufut-Kale ein im 8. Jahrhundert von Mönchen aus Byzanz gegründetes Höhlenkloster.
Der Ort selbst wurde 1502 zum ersten Mal erwähnt und 1532 zum Sitz des Khans Sahib I. Giray und somit Hauptstadt des Khanats der Krim. Unter anderem wurde die Ismi-Chan-Moschee hier errichtet. Nach dem Russisch-Türkischen Krieg 1783 wurde es zu einer normalen Siedlung zurückgestuft, erst 1926 erhielt sie wieder den Status einer Stadt.

Bakhchisarai (Bağçasaray in Crimean Tatar) which roughly means Palace of the Garden is a Tatar town in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, about 30 km from the (semi)island capital Simferopol.
In Bakhchisarai is the Khan's Palace, from which the Crimean Khanate was once governed. The building complex, which was built by Iranian, Turkish, Russian and Ukrainian craftsmen and builders from the 16th to the 18th century, shows a mixture of different architectural styles. It houses the fountain of tears, which Alexander Pushkin praised in a famous poem.
Not far from Bakhchisaray is the cave town of Chufut-Kale (Çufut Qale, Чуфут Кале), which was founded in the 10th century. Furthermore, on the stone plateau of Chufut-Kale there is a cave monastery founded by monks from Byzantium in the 8th century.
The place itself was first mentioned in 1502 and in 1532 it became the seat of Khan Sahib I Giray and thus the capital of the Crimean Khanate. Among other things, the Ismi-Chan Mosque was built here. After the Russo-Turkish War in 1783 it was downgraded to a normal settlement, only in 1926 did it regain city status.
