Places to see in ( Tivoli - Italy )

Places to see in ( Tivoli - Italy )

Tivoli is situated on the Aniene river to the east of Rome, in the Monti Tiburtini hills where the climate is fresher than Rome's. For this reason, the area was popular from ancient times onwards with Rome's moneyed classes, who built summer retreats in the area. As the town was on a major trading route from Rome to the Abruzzi, Tivoli has always been an important settlement. Modern Tivoli has around 50,000 inhabitants, and spreads out far beyond the crumblingly picturesque historical centre. In the suburb of Bagni di Tivoli, on the plains below the town centre, it is still possible to bathe in natural thermal springs. The fourth century BC town wall is still visible, as are temples from the second century BC.

There is plenty to occupy the visitor in Tivoli for a day, even if they miss out one of the two famous villas. Travellers keen to see all the sights of the area should note that the Villa Adriana is actually a bus ride outside town; and they may find their day stretched to an uncomfortable length. Some visitors choose to stay in Tivoli, away from the bustle of Rome; if you are very keen on spending a long time at the monuments, or planning to travel onwards through Italy this may be an option worth considering.

The Renaissance Villa d'Este was built in the 1550s for Cardinal Ippolito d'Este, the son of Lucretia Borgia. Built over a Benedictine convent, the palace was intended for entertaining and contains lavishly frescoed reception rooms. The main attraction for visitors, however, is the breathtaking garden. Designed to impress the Cardinal's guests, the Villa d'Este's gardens are composed almost exclusively of water features. Fountains of every description dazzle the onlooker, from the grand 'Fountain of the Dragons' and 'Hundred Fountains', to a miniature watery reproduction of Rome. The centrepiece, the gigantic Water Organ Fountain, cascades down a huge drop into quiet, shady pools.

For those with an interest in antiquities, the Villa Adriana is worth a day to itself. The Emperor Hadrian conceived a countryside dwelling here that would by normal standards be considered a town. A gigantic complex with underground service passages big enough for vehicles (tantalising glimpses are still visible), the Villa incorporates lakes, fountains, libraries, baths, temples and gardens. The area covered is staggering, and highly confusing even when armed with a map; it's easy to imagine the emperor himself asking for directions.

Villa Gregoriana is an impressive park set in a gorge with a 100m waterfall. The site has recently reopened to the public after restoration by the FAI (Italy's equivalent of the English National Trust, with free entry to NT members). It's a pleasant and shady place to ramble. Views over the gorge can be enjoyed from the Ponte Gregoriano.

Temple of Vesta and Temple of the Sybil - the characteristic round Temple of Vesta occupies a panoramic position above the valley of the Villa Gregoriana, about ten minutes' walk from the Villa d'Este. Ponte Gregoriano - there was a devastating flood in the 1800s; afterwards the river was diverted and this bridge was built. Tivoli Tourist Information Office is in Piazza Garibaldi close to the main bus stop and the Villa d'Este. Even if it's closed, you may be able to pick up maps and information.

Villa d'Este in Tivoli, Italy

The music for this video was provided by Epidemic Sound; Chasing Cloud Nine by LUCHS, Finally
Coming Home by Edward Joe Myers, Pretty Little Petals by Leimonti, Foggy Countryside by More
than Family
Villa d'Este is located in Tivoli, a small Italian town with a listed 2017 population of 56,603. Tivoli
is located about 30 kilometers east-north-east of Rome. Some of the main attractions of Tivoli are
the Villa d'Este, Roca Pia Castle, Temple of Tiburtine Sibyl, Villa Gregoriana, and Hadrian's Villa.
On the outskirts of Tivoli along the Via Empolitana there is the Anio Novus Aqueduct which dates
back to 38 AD, in the reign of Emperor Caligula. We just so happened to drive by the Anio Novus
Aqueduct and it was awesome.
The Villa d'Este exists because of the wealth of one man named Ippolito d'Este. Ippolito was the
grandson of Pope Alexander VI and this presented him many opportunities. At the young age of
thirty Pope Paul III made Ippolito a Cardinal. Thanks to his connections he became one of the
wealthiest Cardinals of the time. His endorsement of the Hapsburg candidate for Pope earned
him the lifetime position of Governor of Tivoli and gave him jurisdiction over the site of Hadrian's
Villa and other sites being excavated at the time.
The number one attraction of the Villa has to be it's fountains. The Villa has 51 fountains and
nymphaeums, 398 spouts, 364 water jets, 64 waterfalls, and 220 basins, fed by 875 meters of
canals, channels, and cascades, and all working entirely by the force of gravity, without pumps.
The water is supplied by the Aniene River, which is partly diverted through the town, a distance
of one kilometer, and at one time by the Rivellese spring which supplied a cistern under the
Villa's courtyard (now supplied by the Aniene also).
The Villa's primary designer Pirro Ligorio laid out the gardens for the Villa with the assistance of
Tommaso Chiruchi of Bologna, one of the most skilled Hydraulic Engineers of the 16th century
(Chiruchi also did the fountains at Villa Lante).
The plans for the Villa itself were carried out under the direction of the Ferrarese Architect
-Engineer Alberto Galvani. The chief painter was Livio Agresti from Forli and the decoration was
carried out by a team of painters under Girolamo Muziano and Federico Zuccari.

Roman Baths of Baia, Italy Tour - 4K with Captions

The Roman Baths of Baia, also known as the Archaeological Park of the Thermal baths of Baia (Parco archeologico delle Terme di Baia), are where the Roman Emperors built their vacation homes and indulged in hedonistic activities that they might have ruined their image back in Rome. This was filmed on Thursday, April 28th starting at 10:58 AM.

Visit Venice - The Don'ts of Visiting Venice, Italy

From Overpriced Gondola Rides to Slippery Streets to Overpriced and Underwhelming Tourist Restaurants this Video Covers What You Shouldn't Do When you Go to Venice, Italy.
Italy is an amazing city, well worth visiting and exploring, but there are a few things tourists and travelers should avoid or not do when they come to Venezia, Italia.
Don't - bring too much luggage, having to lug it over all of those bridges and down long streets is not a fun thing to do,
Don't - be surprised if the locals have different lines than the tourists
Don't - pay for a toilet, go get a Spritz or a Coffee instead. You have to pay for something make it a treat, not a toilet.
Don-t - expect a cheap gondola ride. they are a bit pricey and you will need to pay more to get him to sing.
Don't - forget to explore outside the main island of Venice. There are great places to visit around Venice like the Murano glass factories or farther afield in Padova and Vicenza.
Don't - be surprised if you have walk on risers occasionally when the city floods.
Don't - wear skimpy clothes if you are hoping to get into Basilica San Marco.
There are a lot more don'ts of visiting Venice, but why don't you watch and learn more!

Walk from Tivoli Train Station to Villa 'd'Este. Go to the right.. - Tivoli Italy - ECTV

Tivoli (/ˈtɪvəli/, Italian: [ˈtiːvoli]; Latin: Tibur) is a town and comune in Lazio, central Italy, about 30 kilometres (19 miles) east-north-east of Rome, at the falls of the Aniene river where it issues from the Sabine hills. The city offers a wide view over the Roman Campagna.

Gaius Julius Solinus cites Cato the Elder's lost Origines for the story that the city was founded by Catillus the Arcadian, a son of Amphiaraus, who came there having escaped the slaughter at Thebes, Greece. Catillus and his three sons Tiburtus, Coras, and Catillus[i] drove out the Siculi from the Aniene plateau and founded a city they named Tibur in honor of Tiburtus.[3] According to another account, Tibur was a colony of Alba Longa. Historical traces of settlement in the area date back to the thirteenth century BC. Tibur may share a common root with the river Tiber and the Latin praenomen Tiberius.[4]

From Etruscan times Tibur, a Sabine city, was the seat of the Tiburtine Sibyl. There are two small temples above the falls, the rotunda traditionally associated with Vesta and the rectangular one with the Sibyl of Tibur, whom Varro calls Albunea, the water nymph who was worshipped on the banks of the Anio as a tenth Sibyl added to the nine mentioned by the Greek writers. In the nearby woods, Faunus had a sacred grove. During the Roman age Tibur maintained a certain importance, being on the way (the Via Tiburtina, extended as the Via Valeria) that Romans had to follow to cross the mountain regions of the Apennines towards the Abruzzo, the region where lived some of its fiercest enemies such as Volsci, Sabines, and Samnites.

At first an independent ally of Rome, Tibur allied itself with the Gauls in 361 BC. Vestiges remain of its defensive walls of this period, in opus quadratum. In 338 BC, however, Tibur was defeated and absorbed by the Romans. The city acquired Roman citizenship in 90 BC and became a resort area famed for its beauty and its good water, and was enriched by many Roman villas. The most famous one, of which the ruins remain, is the Villa Adriana (Hadrian's Villa). Maecenas and Augustus also had villas at Tibur, and the poet Horace had a modest villa: he and Catullus and Statius all mention Tibur in their poems. In 273, Zenobia, the captive queen of Palmyra, was assigned a residence here by the Emperor Aurelian. The second-century temple of Hercules Victor is being excavated. The present Piazza del Duomo occupies the Roman forum.

Waterfalls of Tivoli, Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich, 1745–1750
The name of the city came to be used in diminutive form as Tiburi instead of Tibur and so transformed through Tibori to Tiboli and finally to Tivoli.[citation needed] Its inhabitants, however, are still called Tiburtini and not Tivolesi.

In 547, in the course of the Gothic War, the city was fortified by the Byzantine general Belisarius, but was later destroyed by Totila's army. After the end of the war it became a Byzantine duchy, later absorbed into the Patrimony of St. Peter. After Italy was conquered by Charlemagne, Tivoli was under the authority of a count, representing the emperor.

Il Victoria Terme Hotel e le sue Acque Albule - Terme di Roma

Tivoli Terme

BAGNI SAN FILIPPO Terme libere in val d'Orcia - Tuscany - HD

© CLAUDIO MORTINI™◊
