Mais comment expliquer que les eaux se touchent sans se mélanger?
Il y a une énorme différence de salinité entre l’eau claire qui provient de la fonte des glaciers, qui est fraîche et pauvre en sel, tandis que l’eau de l'océan, plus foncée, a une forte concentration en sel. Cette différence de salinité crée une différence de densité.
Comme l'eau et l'huile, ces deux océans se rencontrent sur une longueur presque infinie mais ne se mélangent jamais.
Ce phénomène se retrouve également lors de la rencontre des eaux du Rio Solimões et du Rio Negro, ce qui forme une ligne de démarcation naturelle dans les tons bruns.

A la fin du 19ème siècle, les Français ne contrôlaient que la partie gauche du Fleuve Sénégal dans la région de Kayes au Mali et avaient encore grand peine à empêcher les incursions et les razzias venant de la rive droite encore sous contrôle militaire d'Amadou, le fils d'El Hadj Oumar Tall.
The French only controlled the left bank of the Senegal river by the end of the 19th century in the region of Kayes (Mali) and were barely able to prevent incursions and razzias from the right bank still under Ahmadu's military control, the son of El Hadj Umar Tall.
