Bad Ischl is a spa town in Austria. It lies in the southern part of Upper Austria, at the Traun River in the centre of the Salzkammergut region. The town consists of the Katastralgemeinden Ahorn, Bad Ischl, Haiden, Jainzen, Kaltenbach, Lauffen, Lindau, Pfandl, Perneck, Reiterndorf and Rettenbach. It is connected to the village of Strobl by the river Ischl, which drains from the Wolfgangsee, and to the Traunsee, into which the stream empties. It is home to the Kaiservilla, summer residence of Austro-Hungarian monarchs Emperor Franz Joseph I and Empress Elisabeth. In 2024, Bad Ischl will be the European Capital of Culture – the third city in Austria after Graz (2003) and Linz (2009).

???????? Bad Ischl - Austria | What to Do and See in One Day
Today we are visiting the cute little spa town called Bad Ischl im Salzkammergut in Austria, one of the most famous touristic regions in Austria and an excellent getaway
We took a 20mins ride on the train from Hallstatt to sleep in Bad Ischl instead, but taking it from Linz takes a little longer than an hour and the scenery is absolutely breath-taking, passing along the Traunsee, the deepest lake in Austria.
We definitely recommend Bad Ischl for a day trip or even 1 or 2 nights, you can easily spend a couple of days exploring and relaxing, and even using the SPA resorts in town if budgeting is not a problem, since it is Kaiser-level pricing.
Bad Ischl is also the place of engagement and summer residence of Emperor Franz Josef l and Empress Sissi.

The Austrian World Heritage city of Salzburg is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. We walk on the Monchsberg above the city centre towards the fortress of Hohensalzburg. We are rewarded with views of the city and the mountains which encircle it. A day later we travel through the snow alongside the Wolfgangsee to Bad Ischl in the heart of the Salzkammergut (Austrian Lake District). The spa town of Bad Ischl was favoured by Franz Josef, Emperor of Austria, who had a hunting lodge here. The Imperial presence, meant the town became a fashionable place to be and the many Biedermeier era buildings testify to the importance of the spa during the latter days of the Empire. Today it is a perfect place from which to explore the Lakes & Mountains of this scenic area.
Exploring Bad Ischl Austria
In this video, you will explore Bad Ischl in Austria with me. Bad Ischl was named Austria’s European Capital of Culture. The population is about 14133. It is located in the Southern part of Upper Austria, at the Traun River in the center of the Salzkammergut region.
It was the summer residence of Emperor Franz Joseph I and Empress Elisabeth (Sissi).
In the aftermath of the defeat of Germany in World War II, Bad Ischl was the location of a displaced persons (DP) camp for survivors of the Holocaust and Nazi concentration camps in Eastern Europe. The resident displaced persons were primarily Jews from Poland and other neighboring countries. They were provided with lodging, food, medical care, and administrative assistance until they were able to make other, more permanent arrangements. Many left for the United States, Israel, and Canada. The Bad Ischl DP camp remained active from 1945 through 1952.
In 1854, the Emperor's mother, Archduchess Sophie, gave him the Kaiservilla (Imperial Villa) as a wedding present. The villa became the imperial family's summer residence; Franz Joseph described it as Heaven on Earth. He also granted a nearby mansion to mistress Katharina Schratt, that could be easily reached via a hidden footpath. The villa is still owned by the Habsburg-Lorraine family, although the grounds and parts of the residence are now open to the public.

All is good in Bad Ischl | Traipsing Blitz - Quick Tour in less than an hour at Bad Ischl
On my way to Hallstatt from Salzburg, I have made a quick sneak at Austria's hidden gem - the colorful Bad Ischl. It was an opportune time to quickly leave the train tracks and see what was once dubbed heaven on earth as Franz Joseph I of Austria said. It doesn't disappoint even if the name of this little hamlet starts with Bad.
But in Austria, when a place is prefixed with Bad, it's actually good - bad being a description that distinguishes the place of being a spa town. This charming little place is a resort haven in Salzkammergut region. Featured here is the idyllic town center along the church street upon the Traun river.
The beauty and serenity of the current Bad Ischl belies some dark blip of its past that in this town, the Austrian declaration of war against Serbia was signed which effectively ignited the first World War.
