7 Wonders of India: Lepakshi Temple

Built in the 16th century, the Lepakshi Temple is a brilliant example of the Vijayanagar style of architecture. It has a huge complex where three shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and Lord Virabhadra are to be found, Lord Virabhadra being the wrathful form of Shiva, the patron deity of the Nayak rulers. It has a central pavilion, embracing all the three shrines. This pavilion is further connected with an intermediary hall and a hall for ritual dance. Surrounding the main hall is a large open court, accessible from the east.

Lepakshi - Weekend getaway from Bangalore - Steps Together

Located in the Anantpur district of Andhra Pradesh, Lepakshi makes a great destination for a day trip from Bangalore.
Lepakshi is at a distance of around 120km from Bangalore and
It takes nearly 2 hr to reach the place by car via Bangalore - Hyderabad highway
According to the Valmiki Ramayana, it is believed that this was the place where Rama had met the dying Jatayu and had helped him achieve salvation by uttering the words 'Le Pakshi' or “Rise, oh bird” in Telegu.

Before reaching the main temple at Lepakshi, you will be welcomed by a large monolithic Nandi. This Nandi statue in Lepakshi is made of a single granite stone and is said to be one of the largest monolithic statues in India.
It is 20 feet in height and 30 feet in length. It was built in 1583 by the rulers of the Vijayanagara empire. The Giant statue of Jatayu, built recently near the Nandi statue also attracts a lot of tourists.

Veerabhadra Swamy Temple of Lepakshi is just 500 m from the location of the Nandi statue.
The temple dates back to 1583 and was built by the brothers, Virupanna and Veeranna, who were initially in the service of the Vijayanagara kings.
However, another legend states that the temple was built by the sage Agastya. The temple was built on a small hillock which is in the shape of a tortoise and hence known as Kurma Saila. Temple’s main deity is Veerabhadra, the fiery god created by Shiva.
The sanctum also houses the shrines of lord shiva, Lord Vishnu, Ramalinga, Bhadrakali & Hanuman.

As soon as you enter the temple, Natyamantapa and Ardha Mantapa greet you with eye-catchy and artistically beautiful sculptures.
The Lepakshi temple also has the finest specimens of mural paintings of the Vijayanagar kings. The ceilings of the Natya and Ardha Mandapa are decorated with murals that depict scenes from the epics like the Mahabharata, Ramayana, and the Puranas. The Shiva-Parvathi wedding painting is most notable among the rest.

There are about 35 large pillars in the mandapa and the most interesting one is the Hanging pillar which is suspended a few inches above the floor and does not rest on the ground fully. It is said that the pillar is dispositioned a bit after a British engineer tried to move it in an unsuccessful attempt to uncover the secret of its support.
A massive 18 ft tall Monolithic Nagalinga attracts visitors with three coils and seven hoods. It provides shelter to a black granite Shivalingam.
A huge Ganesha present at the right side is carved out of the same boulder as Nagalinga.

The maroon spots on the wall behind nagalinga are said to be the marks left by the bleeding eyes of Virupanna.
According to the legend, the builder Virupanna was the treasurer of the Vijayanagar Empire who utilized the treasury’s money to build the temple during the king’s absence. When the King returned from his campaign, he found the treasury had been emptied by Virupanna, and he ordered that the treasurer be blinded. Angered by this command, Virupanna carried out his punishment himself. So the red blotches on the walls of the unfinished Kalyana Mandapa are nothing but his eyes!

Yet another prime attraction within the Veerabhadra Swamy Temple complex of Lepakshi is Kalyana Mantapa. Similar to the structure of the main temple mandapa, the Kalyana mandapa has a circular arrangement of pillars. It was built to perform the Wedding ceremony for Lord Shiva and Parvathi during the annual festivals of the temple. There are about 38 pillars in the mandapa carved out of granite stone that exhibit the carvings of several gods and saints. According to legend, the main architect Virupanna ran out of funds while trying to build & complete the Kalyana mandapa. Hence the structure stands unfinished.

There is a large open area beyond the Kalyana mandapa which was used for cultural and recreational activities during the Vijayanagar rule.
At one corner of the courtyard, there lies this big footprint impression.
Some believe that it is of Lord Hanuman's and others say it is of Sita's.
It is interesting to note that this imprint remains wet during all the season.

A series of pillars at the backside of Kalyana Mantapa has beautiful intricate designs carved on them. These carvings have also inspired the designs of famous Lepakshi Sarees
Beautiful intricate designs carved on the pillars behind Kalyana Mandapa
are said to be the inspiration for Lepakshi Saree designs

In the courtyard, you can also find giant pallets carved out of stone. Even though there is no relevant information regarding these, one can only guess that they might have been used as the place to serve the offerings to god during the Pooja ceremony.

Jatayu Theme Park, Lepakshi | 120 KM from Bangalore

Jatayu theme park in lepakshi has been recently built near Veerabhadra temple and Nandi statue. It was not there during my last visit to Lepakshi in 2012. It is located around 120 km from Bangalore and would be a good candidate for a day trip or weekend one day trip to Lepakshi.

Entry fees: Rs 10 per person
Timings: 9 AM to 6 PM

Jatayu (Eagle) is related to the Hindu epic of Ramayana. When Ravan abducted Sita and was taking her to Lanka, Jatayu came to rescue Sita and gave a fight. But ravan greviously injured Jatayu and it fell down at Lepakshi. When Ram came and saw Jatayi he said Le Pakshi which in Telugu means rise bird.

The Jatayu statue has been placed on a stone boulder on a free holding hillock. There is a small climb on the stairs to reach the top. On the top you can find signs of old workmanship and you will get a good birdseye view of the surrounding area. You will also get to Veerabhadra swamy temple from here and Nandi statue from here. Be careful of little monkey menace. Do not display any food or water bottles and manage your hand bags etc carefully.

Watch the earlier two videos of the Lepakshi series to know about the other places of interest like Veerabhadra temple and Nandi statue. Also, about to reach Lepakshi.

Lepakshi | Veerabhadra Temple | One day trip from Bangalore

Sri Veerabhadra Temple, Lepakshi is around 130 kilometers from Bengaluru. This was our first long ride together and we thoroughly enjoyed the Bangalore Hyderabad highway.

This travel video in Malayalam covers not only this mysterious temple, Nandi Statue and the Jatayu theme park, but also the Vineyards, Rose and Yellow Marigold fields on the sides of the National Highway.

You can also get to know the history of Lepakshi Veerabhadra temple.

As few online sources claim, the hanging pillar in Lepakshi has nothing to do with anti-gravity or levitation. The pillar by an act of a British architect has slightly changed its position and only one of the for corner touches the ground.

Veerabhadra temple is a Hindu temple located in the Lepakshi, in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. The temple is dedicated to the Virabhadra, a fierce incarnation of Lord Shiva. Built in the 16th century, the architectural features of the temple are in the Vijayanagara style with profusion of carvings and paintings at almost every exposed surface of the temple. It is one of the centrally protected monuments of national importance and is considered one of the most spectacular Vijayanagara temples.[1][2] The fresco paintings are particularly detailed in very bright dresses and colours with scenes of Rama and Krishna from the epic stories of the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and the Puranas and they are well preserved. There is a very large Nandi (bull), mount of Shiva, about 200 metres (660 ft) away from the temple which is carved from a single block of stone, which is said to be one of the largest of its type in the world. The temple is home to many Kannada inscriptions as its located close to Karnataka border.

Gudibande Fort | Drone shots | Offbeat Place Near Bangalore | One Day Trip 100 kms From Bangalore

Hello friends, welcome back to another vlog. This is our 2nd vlog from the Lepakshi ride, after finishing the Lepakshi exploration, we had time to visit Gudibande Fort / Gudibanda Betta, which is only 20 km from Lepakshi and the road there is in good condition; while coming from there the picturesque and view of hills are nice to watch. If you are travelling from Bangalore, it is only 92 km distance. Gudibande fort is in Chikkaballapur district of Karnataka state, the height of the fort is around 2700 ft and was built around 400 odd years ago in the 17th century. The trek to the fort is easy and stairs are built till the hilltop makes it easy to walk, some patches of the steps are not made. The only thing is, the fort is not well maintained, grasses and bushes have covered the trails. No ticket is required to climb the hill and there is free parking. On the top of the fort is a Shiva temple known as Sir Rameshwara Temple, established by Sage Vishwamitra and Lord Rama which is believed to be one of the 108 Jyotirlingas. The view from the hilltop will just make your day and I advise you not to visit during a sunny day, try visiting in the morning or evening.
