Ukraine Odesa Beach Walk. Black sea coastline walking.

Odessa is the third most populous city of Ukraine and a major tourism center, seaport and transport hub located in the south-west of the country, on the northwestern shore of the Black Sea. The city is also the administrative center of the Odessa Raion and Odessa Oblast, as well a multiethnic cultural center. Odessa is sometimes called the pearl of the Black Sea, the South Capital (under the Russian Empire and Soviet Union), The Humor Capital and Southern Palmyra.
Before the Tsarist establishment of Odessa, an ancient Greek settlement existed at its location. A more recent Tatar settlement was also founded at the location by Hacı I Giray, the Khan of Crimea in 1440 that was named after him as Hacibey (or Khadjibey). After a period of Lithuanian Grand Duchy control, Hacibey and surroundings became part of the domain of the Ottomans in 1529 and remained there until the empire's defeat in the Russo-Turkish War of 1792.
In 1794, the city of Odessa was founded by a decree of the Russian empress Catherine the Great. From 1819 to 1858, Odessa was a free port—a porto-franco. During the Soviet period, it was the most important port of trade in the Soviet Union and a Soviet naval base. On 1 January 2000, the Quarantine Pier at Odessa Commercial Sea Port was declared a free port and free economic zone for a period of 25 years.
During the 19th century, Odessa was the fourth largest city of Imperial Russia, after Moscow, Saint Petersburg and Warsaw. Its historical architecture has a style more Mediterranean than Russian, having been heavily influenced by French and Italian styles. Some buildings are built in a mixture of different styles, including Art Nouveau, Renaissance and Classicist.

Travel To Kherson Ukraine - 6 Awesome Things To Do In Kherson

The first episode of the Jet Set Together travel show is all about Kherson, Ukraine. This region in the south of the country borders Crimea, the Black Sea, and the Sea of Azov.

In this episode I go all over this amazing region, from simple kayaking in the wetlands, to overnight camping on an uninhabited island. Some excursions are a look into public transportation in Ukraine, and some are with a wonderful tour company in the region.

If you want to travel to Kherson, Ukraine or are just an avid traveler like me, head to my travel blog for plenty of detailed guides for places all over the world.

For specific segments the in depth guides are:

00:00 - Intro And Kherson Info
01:25 - Prince Trubetskoy Winery
05:44 - Dzharylhach Island:
10:05 - Kayaking
11:35 - Kherson Cliffs (Ukraine Grand Canyon)
13:18 - Safari in Askania-Nova:
17:25 - The Pink Lake on Arabatskaya Strelka:

I understand that Kherson isn't at the top of everyone's favorite places in Ukraine, but if you can see, there are quite a lot of awesome things to do in this Ukraine city on the Black Sea. The history of the city is interesting, and even though the city is filled with commie-blocks, venture to the nature outside the city and you'll be impressed with how much there is to see.

In fact, Kherson is a great city to visit in Ukraine if you want to travel around the country on a budget as it's far less expensive than Kyiv, Odesa, or my favorite city, Lviv. Traveling around Ukraine on public transportation, while taking some getting used to, is a great way to see some less touristy parts of this beautiful Eastern European country.

Top 5 Places To Visit In Ukraine | Unseen Earth

Ukraine (Ukrainian: Україна, romanized: Ukraïna, pronounced [ʊkrɐˈjinɐ] (audio speaker inconsistent)) is a country in Eastern Europe. It is the second-largest country by area in Europe after Russia, which it borders to the east and north-east.[a] Ukraine also shares borders with Belarus to the north; Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary to the west; Romania and Moldova[b] to the south; and has a coastline along the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea. It spans an area of 603,628 km2 (233,062 sq mi).[c] With a population of 43 million,[10][d] Ukraine is the eighth-most populous country in Europe. The nation's capital and largest city is Kyiv.

The territory of modern Ukraine has been inhabited since 32,000 BCE. During the Middle Ages, the area was a key centre of East Slavic culture under the Kyivan Rus', which was destroyed by the Mongol invasion in the 13th century. Over the next 600 years, the area was contested, divided, and ruled by external powers, including the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Austrian Empire, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, and the Tsardom of Russia. The Cossack Hetmanate emerged in Central Ukraine in the 17th century but was partitioned between Russia and Poland, and ultimately absorbed by the Russian Empire entirely. In the aftermath of the Russian Revolution, a Ukrainian national movement re-surfaced and the Ukrainian People's Republic was formed in 1917. The short-lived state was forcibly reconstituted into the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, which became a founding member of the Soviet Union (USSR) in 1922. From 1932 to 1933 the Holodomor killed millions of Ukrainians. In 1939, following the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, Western Ukraine was annexed by the USSR. Ukraine was the most populous and industrialised republic after the Russian Soviet Republic, until regaining its independence in 1991, following the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

Azov sea

10/11/13

Mariupol shore of the Azov Sea.

I arrived in Mariupol.

What do you know about Russian villages?

We are in the village of Obukhovka. The whole village is in bridges, canals, passages. The remains of bridges or piers remind of the proximity of port facilities. Here begins the territory of the cargo terminal and the Obukhovsky shipyard. The plant, founded in 1932, was engaged in the repair of the fishing fleet of the Rostov region. In the 1980s, it was considered one of the largest enterprises in our region. But then came the devastating 90s. Both the fishing farms and the plant itself fell into decay.
Now the situation has begun to change, workshops have been repaired, equipment has been restored, specialists have returned to the enterprise. Today, the plant's capacities allow repairing fishing and research vessels, tugs, barges, yachts, boats. During the inter-navigation period, the berths of the Obukhovsky are used for laying the fleet.
The main attraction in Obukhovka is, of course, the church, the old, original masonry of the bell tower. It is said that the temple never stopped its work, even during the most severe persecution. The church was founded in 1861. She was constantly tweaking.
The temple has gone through a lot: in Soviet times, they wanted to close it, but the locals managed to save it. In the 1940s, they were on duty near the temple around the clock, so as not to let the representatives of the Elizabethan village council.
Now, to see the Church of the Transfiguration, people come from different parts of the country. This place can be called truly Orthodox, where people were able to defend their faith, and in Soviet times it was very difficult.
The Elizavetovskoye settlement is the remains of an ancient settlement near the village of Elizavetinskaya, the Azov district of the Rostov region, existed from the 6th to the 3rd centuries. BC e.
More than two thousand years ago, there was a large cultural and commercial center of the Scythians, an administrative, religious and craft center, which occupied a large area. In the 4th c. BC. The settlement served as the main regional center, as Rostov-on-Don is now. The city was built according to a predetermined plan, with temples and other public buildings, with a clear system of streets and a breakdown into quarters.
The territory of the settlement was surrounded by defensive ditches and embankments. There were burial grounds nearby. According to one version, the settlement ceased to exist due to internecine strife that engulfed the Bosporan kingdom.
At a later time, a modern village was founded on the local lands by people from the Don lower villages. Later, in the late 1770s, Cossacks settled here, who had previously served in the Azov regiment. Fishing was the main source of income. In the most prominent places stood two temples. Two schools were opened.
Today there are houses of merchant Cossacks, men's and women's schools, the ataman's estate, the Cossack yurt administration. Next to the foundation of the church destroyed in 1937 stands the chapel of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos. According to a long tradition, the holidays of the Don fish soup and a music festival with the participation of folklore ensembles are held in the village.
Only in 2015 was finally built a stationary bridge. But this village also fell into decay in the 90s of the 20th century and now it is just a lifeless summer cottage, where among the luxurious mansions of two or three floors with a separate pier, you can still find some old houses with a reed roof, old buffets and Viennese chairs inside. One can look at such a situation endlessly.
Many abandoned estates, many ads for the sale of real estate. Since the fast and convenient water transport from Azov and Rostov stopped going here and the older generation of retired summer residents left, there has been a decline.
In the center of the island there is now a huge wasteland. But this is the former Maidan of the village, and once public life was in full swing here, there was a market, churches, Cossacks held meetings.
There are no paved roads, sidewalks, traffic lights, traffic jams, industry, only endless water meadows, someone's tangled vegetable gardens, bridges, ditches and water from all sides. In my opinion, it would be possible to create a wonderful ecological place for tourists to relax here.
The spirit of a real Russian village is still preserved here, where people know each other well, organize holidays on their own and celebrate them together, where there are no high fences in a large number, but on the contrary, good old open courtyards, when you can visit a neighbor without an invitation, one can feel that same Russian soul, house, river, church)))
