What is soooo special about #Niger? ❤️ | WikiTravel Destinations Video Tour

What is so special about Niger! Niger has stunning natural beauty, especially in the Mountain ranges in the north of the country, but also houses a few old trading centers in the Sahara, such as Agadez and Zinder, that have a distinct mixture of arab/tuareg and black african culture.

Cities

Niamey — Capital & commercial center, possibly the least crowded/hectic capital in West Africa
Agadez — A mecca of trade along trans-Saharan trade routes for over five centuries, home to a magnificent palace and several mosques and a gateway to the nearby Air Mountains
Ayorou — Along picturesque section of the River Niger with one of Niger's best markets, and a starting point for river trips to Gaya
Diffa — Peul town between shifting sand dunes and disappearing swampland which serves as the gateway to SE Niger & Lake Chad
Dosso — has a small ethnic museum, colorful market and even more colorful chief's palace
Maradi — Center of agriculture (especially peanuts), home to a colorful chief's palace, and near seasonal rivers/floodplains which have caused interesting land formations to the south

Koure Giraffe Reserve in Koure, Niger

Kouré is a rural community located 60 kilometres east of Niamey, the capital of Niger. The town lies on both sides of the road from Niamey to Dallol Bosso.

Visit Koure Giraffe Reserve for a chance to get close to the world’s tallest animals. Join a tour guided by a park ranger, who'll take you around the vast reserve in search of majestic giraffes. Although not present in great numbers, West African giraffes still roam free across the reserve, and you can find them in groups, strolling across the land, nibbling on leaves, or searching for a place to rest. Make sure you maintain a safe distance when observing the giraffes, and don’t feed them with your own food.

Kouré is best known for West African giraffes, an endemic subspecies of West Africa. The population of giraffes in Niger reached a low of 50 animals 1984, but according to the Association to Safeguard Giraffes in Niger there are now 170 of them. ASGN and its partners have assisted the local community with bore holes, cereal banks, grain mills, seeds and fertilizer to encourage them to protect the giraffes, which can be destructive to crops. However, the population of giraffes is threatened by loss of the tiger bush habitat, which is gradually being cleared for agriculture.

The African Wildlife Foundation is helping with reforestation. In August 2010, a tree nursery in Kouré produced about 3,500 seedlings. AWF planned to establish another nursery in the area in 2011.

In July 2011 the Association des Scouts du Niger ran an international solidarity camp at Kouré. About 300 young people aged 18 to 25 years from various countries attended. The theme was promoting youth participation in development through a culture of peace, tolerance and nonviolence.

It's time to put Niger on the map!

When I arrived in Niger yesterday, my 168th country, I was picked up at the airport by an Instagram friend named Aminata.

Little did I know that she'd be one of the coolest people I've ever met in my life!

After living in Germany for the last 7 years, she was fed up when people would mistake her for being 'Nigerian' (the English-speaking country next door). So she recently moved back to her hometown of Niamey, Niger to start an NGO promoting her country's culture and traditions. In a sense, she is the one and only 'cultural ambassador' for her Niger and she is doing big things like organizing the first international cultural festival in August.

In our globalized world of fast-paced, cut-throat societies -- it's imperative for us to preserve our beautiful cultures, like Aminata is doing with Niger.

Share this video to help Aminata's goal of putting her country on the map! I may add, an amazing country that is :)
