Sulla collina dove sorgeva l'acropoli dell'antica città di Avella, si trovano i ruderi del Castello medioevale, fondato tra l'XI e il XII secolo, che costituiva uno dei più imponenti complessi fortificati della Campania.
Secondo la tradizione fu edificato dai Longobardi sui resti di un tempio di Ercole. Il sito gode di una posizione strategica di controllo del territorio circostante, a guardia di un itinerario naturale che, attraverso il passo di Monteforte Irpino, mette in comunicazione la pianura campana con la Valle del Sabato.
Appartenuto nel tempo ad alcune delle più prestigiose famiglie aristocratiche italiane, dagli Orsini, ai del Balzo, ai Doria del Carretto, ne seguì le vicende e le alterne fortune, prima di avviarsi a una lenta decadenza. Oggi il castello si presenta ai visitatori restaurato solo parzialmente.

Il complesso monumentale del Castello di Avella, attestato sui rilievi collinari che bordano ad Est la pianura campana, occupa una collina dai fianchi scoscesi situata sulla destra del fiume Clanis; alle sue spalle si stagliano i monti di Avella, barriera naturale che separa il comprensorio avellano-baianese dalla Valle Caudina. Il sito gode di una posizione strategica di controllo del territorio circostante, a guardia di un itinerario naturale che attraverso il passo di Monteforte Irpino mette in comunicazione la pianura campana con la valle del Sabato e conduce verso la Puglia e la costa adriatica.
La sommità della collina (m 320 s.l.m.) è occupata dalle strutture della rocca, dominata dalla mole di una torre cilindrica su base troncoconica saldata alle imponenti strutture del donjon. Due cinte murarie, sviluppandosi a diversa quota, cingono le pendici del colle e si ricongiungono sul lato settentrionale, alla base della rocca. La prima cinta, datata ad epoca longobarda, ha una pianta ellittica e abbraccia una superficie di circa mq 10.000; del circuito si conservano dieci semitorri (una è inglobata alla base dell’angolo settentrionale del donjon) delle quali cinque a sezione troncoconica e quattro di forma troncopiramidale. La seconda cinta, a pianta poligonale, prevede una porta carraia nell’angolo sud-orientale e nove torri, tutte quadrangolari eccetto quella dell’angolo sud-occidentale della fortificazione, a pianta pentagonale; la superficie racchiusa all’interno del circuito è di circa mq. 21.000.
Il Castello viene edificato dai Longobardi nel VII secolo d.C. sui resti del tempio di Ercole. Il primo insediamento è forse un avamposto militare, utilizzato come baluardo contro il Ducato bizantino di Napoli, a controllo della strada Avellino e Benevento. Sede dei baroni di Avella - appartenenti alla dinastia normanna - passò nelle mani dei Del Balzo, Orsini e Doria del Carretto, fino a diventare possedimento della famiglia Spinelli che restaura la fortezza nel 1533. La fortificazione ha una forma tendenzialmente trapezoidale ed è costituita da tre aree distinte con andamento pressoché concentrico. La prima comprende il palatium Mastio, i cui muri interni, realizzati con materiale come blocchi di tufo e rari pezzi di calcare sagomato, presentano tracce degli adattamenti che la struttura ha subito nel tempo. Nell’angolo sud-est del palatium sorge la grande torre circolare, tipica dell’architettura angioina: un alto cilindro su una base a tronco di cono, con funzioni di maschio per proteggere la porta di accesso. Al primo livello, quello inferiore si trova la cisterna e nei vani superiori sono allocati i servizi e gli ambienti per la residenza. La seconda e la terza area sono formate da due cinte murarie.
