10 days, 7100km train journey across Australia, Cairns to Perth by rail

This is my ultimate guide to train travel in Australia. I spent 10 days in late June to travel over 7100km from Cairns to Perth via Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and Adelaide.

Cairns is the north-most railway station in Australia that is still regularly served by a government-run long-distance not-for-profit passenger train, and Perth is the western end of Australia’s standard gauge rail network. I would like to summarise and compare the different passenger trains in Australia in one video before I move on and show you the train journeys in other parts of the world. I hope you will enjoy the video. Let's go!

BUNBURY / WESTERN AUSTRALIA / DOLPHIN DISCOVERY CENTRE / THINGS TO DO IN BUNBURY / BUNBURY WA

#Bunbury
#BunburyWesternAustralia
#WesternAustralia

In this episode, I travel by plane to Perth, Western Australia and drive a couple of hours to the town of Bunbury. While in town, I’ll take you around and show you things you can see and do locally.

Bunbury is a port city in Western Australia, south of Perth. It's known for wild bottlenose dolphins that often swim close to the beach at Koombana Bay. They have a Dolphin Discovery Centre and the Leschenault Inlet, with calm waters and parkland rich with mangroves and birdlife. Bunbury’s western coastline spans popular Back Beach and Wyalup-Rocky Point, with its basalt rock formations.

Whilst in Perth I went to the following places:
Bunbury Lighthouse Lookout
Dolphin Discovery Centre
Wyalup-Rocky Point
Froth Craft Brewery Bunbury
Dome café
Koombana Bay
Mangrove Walk and Boardwalk
Last Slice Sports Bar
Corners on the Bay
The Rose Hotel & Motel
Bunbury Farmers Market

The Dolphin Discovery Centre, located in Bunbury, is a non-profit organisation committed to dolphin research, education, conservation and tourism. The Centre was opened in 1994, and is the first Centre in Australia dedicated entirely to dolphin research. The Centre doesn’t have dolphins, but as there are over a 100 dolphins living in the Bay nearby, you can walk from the Centre to see groups of dolphins regularly visit the shallow waters.

Bunbury Lighthouse Lookout
Bunbury’s lighthouse is relatively new, but its chequered exterior makes it a favourite with photographers. You can see the lighthouse from most places in Bunbury. It stands 25 metres tall and can be seen 27 kilometres out to sea. The lighthouse was replaced in 1901 with a temporary skeletal tower. In 1903 the provisional tower was superseded by a cast iron beacon. In 1959, the cast iron tower was raised in height with a cylindrical extension and new lantern; these parts were then incorporated into the present lighthouse when it was built in 1970.

Wyalup Rocky Point
Wyalup Rocky Point is a place of Indigenous significance. Wyalup means a ‘place of mourning’ as in the past the area was a Noongar burial ground. The waves plummet over these ancient and rare rock formations. Sunset time is the best, where the light creeps down over the evening landscape, providing a dramatic backdrop.

Froth Craft Brewery
Froth Craft Brewery is a local award-winning family-friendly restaurant/micro-brewery/live music venue with a kitchen serving up delicious local produce and bar pouring artisan craft beer brewed on-site. The have a welcoming and rustic atmosphere between the eclectic areas: beer garden, bar, verandah, street side alfresco area and sky lounge.

Koombana Bay
Koombana Bay is one of few places in the world where you can enjoy a magical encounter with wild dolphins by choosing to join a swim tour, a wildlife cruise or a ‘meet and greet’ in the dolphin interaction zone at the shoreline. The bay is just two kilometers east of Bunbury.

Mangrove Walk
I was lucky enough to stumble across The Mangrove Walk. It is a circuit around the Leschenalut Inlet waterway in East Bunbury. This waterway contains an ancient mangrove community which represents the southernmost occurrence of the white mangrove in Western Australia. Informative signage is located throughout the walk.

Bunbury Farmers Market.
Bunbury Farmers Market is an absolute must-visit – whether you’re coming back up to Perth from a weekend down south or you’re a Bunbury local. Overflowing with local produce, it’s a food-lover’s paradise where you’ll find everything from cold-pressed juice to market-made dinners, decadent cheeses and the freshest veggies.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA: PERTH in 4K - Ultimate ROAD TRIP - ALL Sights, Fremantle & Koala Park

Australia is a paradise for every traveller. The gigantic country is full of wild animals, beautiful natural places and cultural highlights. After a previous trip along the east coast of Australia, we now visit the west coast in the province of Western Australia. And how? We take the 4x4 with two rooftop tents and head out into the great outdoors. We drive from Perth to Broome and last time you saw us take a trip to Margaret River in the south. In this second part, it's the turn of the only major city on the west coast: Perth! We see the beautiful skyline, walk through King's Park and the Botanic Gardens. We also see Australia's oldest baobab tree of up to 750 years old and the city's war memorial. We dive downtown at Elisabeth Quay, do a beer tasting at Island Beerhouse and drive to colonial Freemantle. Finally, there is also time for a visit to the Cohunu Koala Park, a nature reserve where all Australian animals can be viewed well. What an adventure!

After this first part we will visit Perth, Fremantle, Rotnest Island, the Pinnacles, Geraldton, Hutt Lagoon, Calbarri National Park, Hamlin Pool, Shark Bay, François Peron, Monkey Mia, Carnarvon, Coral Bay, Ningaloo Reef, Exmouth, Cape Range National Park, Karijini National Park, Port Headland, 80 Mile Beach, Cape Keraudren and Broome.

We make our trip through Australia during a year-long world tour. We may even continue to travel indefinitely. On New Year's Day we started in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the Canary Islands. Then you saw us in Oman, Cape Verde, Martinique, Saint Lucia, Tobago, Grenada, the Bahamas, the United States, Mexico, Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands, Brazil, Qatar, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia. The next continent Australia is already our nineteenth destination. Follow us on this world tour, first in Perth, then the rest of West-Australia and then to many more beautiful destinations! We also cross over to Africa! We travel non-stop all year round and film everything, with a new episode every week. Also take a look at instagram @woutoftheworld or

The Australind train | Bunbury to Perth on an ageing diesel | Review

Find out what it's like to travel by train between Bunbury and Perth in Western Australia.

The Australind is an ageing, diesel train built in 1987 and increasingly beset by technical problems. The railcars are going to be replaced in 2023 but in the meantime - what's the journey like? Travelling twice daily between the West Australian capital and the state's third biggest city, Bunbury, The Australind features a buffet, comfortable seats and pleasant, green scenery.

The service is operated by TransWA narrow gauge ADP/ADQ railcars built by Comeng, Bassendean for Westrail in 1987. The diesel multiple units (DMU) generally operate in a three-car arrangement. The sets were refurbished in 2007 and 2010-11 and have a maximum speed of 120kmh.

My train to Bunbury was replaced by a bus because of engineering works but thankfully the return service to Perth was operated by The Australind.

Train fares and timetables available here:
