At one time, it was a major hub for both industry and organized criminal activity, but over the years, the city has experienced a bit of a renaissance of sorts. These days the addition of parks, museums, restaurants, bars, clubs, and a variety of other attractions have helped the city to reconnect with it's roots while paving a way forward to the future. The Providence of today bears very little semblance to the one of a hundred years ago, but even so, it's done a good job at preserving its history and architecture in such a way that it still holds some of its original charm and soul.
The majority of Providence's attractions can be found in four distinct neighborhoods. Downcity encompasses the core of the downtown region as well as Waterplace Park, Capitol Hill, and Providence Place Mall.
Federal Hill is a neighborhood due west of downtown and runs along Atwells Avenue. There you will find a vibrant nightlife scene and some of the best Italian cuisines in the city.
College Hill, or The East Side as it is sometimes called, features some of the city's oldest and historically significant homes and architecture. It's also home of Brown University as well as the Rhode Island School of Design. The area is also known for its eclectic shops, restaurants, and lively urban culture.
South Providence has developed a pretty nasty reputation over the decades. It's a neighborhood that has historically been impoverished and crime-laden, but just like any urban setting, as long as you navigate the neighborhood with a little bit of caution, you'll find that it's a great place to go to get away from all of the hustle and bustle of downtown. There are plenty of restaurants, hair salons, banks, pharmacies, supermarkets, and libraries in this area, and downtown is just a quick 15-minute drive away.

North Attleboro Massachusetts (MA) Real Estate Tour

North Attleboro, Massachusetts is an industrial town in Bristol county on the Rhode Island border. In pre-colonial times, it was the site of the Bay Path, a major Indian trail to Narragansett Bay, the Seekonk River and Boston. John Woocock and family established a small settlement in North Attleboro in 1669, which subsisted on agriculture, fishing and hunting, but also clearly liked a little conviviality because by 1670, Woocock had received a license to open an ordinary, or tavern.
The settlement at North Attleboro was attacked during King Philip's War, with two killed and one home burned, but the garrison house which Woocock had built survived the attack. Recovery was swift after the war and the community grew very quickly. In about 1780, a French settler set up a forge for working brass and the industrial era arrived in North Attleboro. Englishmen brought with them British machinery from Birmingham in 1794 and designed American improvements in button-making which they patented.
During the 18th and early 19th centuries, small grist and sawmills were built along the Tenmile River, and subsequently established nail factories were eventually eclipsed by cotton spinning mills. The development of cotton spinning was spurred by the embargo on imports resulting from the War of 1812. Textiles and jewelry manufacturing were the staple industries of North Attleboro's economy by 1832 but buttons were king.
By 1834, it was said that North Attleboro produced more buttons than anywhere else in the United States. Through the 19th century, there was tremendous growth and innovation in the jewelry industry and the number of firms in the town increased sharply. The Civil War spurred their growth with profitable U. S. Army orders for badges and medals. La Salette Christmas Lights
La Salette National Shrine in Attleboro, MA has been lighting up the night sky for 68 years. Their Celebration of Lights features over 400,000 lights and displays telling the story of Christ's birth.
Although it's not a hike, it's outdoor walking and beautiful to see.
It is family and stroller friendly but almost entirely outdoors, so dress warm.
It is free to visit, but donations are accepted and I highly encourage you to make one to keep this tradition going for many more years.
Lights come on daily at 5pm and turn off at 9pm.
Be sure to arrive a little early as traffic can be heavy at times, however parking is typically plentiful.
