10 Things To Do in Vientiane, Laos on your VACATION!

✅Best-Selling travel gear
????Booking.com Deals

Vientiane is the capital city of Laos but many visitors here say that it feels more like a small village than a bustling central hub. Vientiane has a relaxed and serene vibe to it and you will find a number of attractions here that make it the perfect place to spend a few days before you head off to other places around the country.

Welcome to ThingsToDo Channel, today we’re going to list 10 things to do in Vientiane.

Explore the Lao Textile Museum.

This small museum used to be privately owned by a local family who also own the Kanchana Boutique. Nowadays however it has morphed to become one of the key cultural sights in Vientiane and is located around a gorgeous little Laotian compound. Here you will find a typical wooden house which is filled with ancient weaving tools and looms, and there are also antique textiles here that represent the various ethnic groups in Laos. If you want to get hands-on them you can also take a textile painting class.

Go on a cycling tour.

Bicycle touring around Vientiane has become increasingly popular in recent years and you can now sign up for a tour with several companies like Vientiane ByCycle. You can usually opt for half-day or full-day tours and a local tour guide will take you around the city to out of the way spots such as villages, temples, and markets.

Check out the National Ethnic Cultural Park.

The National Ethnic Cultural Park is on the outskirts of Vientiane and is known for having models of traditional houses that represent all the different ethnic groups in Laos. You can tour the different houses at the park as well as check out some statues of dinosaurs and visit the small zoo here.

Go for a massage.

Laos is known for its local massage technique which uses herbal sauna and steam rooms. Local plants and herbs are boiled in a traditional Laotian bathhouse in a sealed room to create a steamy environment and this is then followed by a relaxing massage.

Admire Wat Si Saket.

Wat Si Saket has the claim to fame of being the only surviving temple in Laos from before the invasion of Siam in 1828. Unfortunately, much of the city was razed to the ground at this time, but the temple managed to avoid being demolished and you can come here to check out the 5,000 sculptures of the Buddha for which it is also famous.

Discover Wat Si Muang.

Wat Si Muang is one of the most popular temples in Vientiane and is a great place to visit if you want to see some of the finest Laotian Buddhist design work in the country.

Learn some history at the Lao National Museum.

If you want to know more about the history and culture of Laos, then you need to head to the Lao National Museum, also sometimes referred to simply as The National Museum. The museum is actually housed inside a building that was constructed during the French colonial period and you will find a huge number of interesting exhibits on sale here.

Eat at Vientiane Night Market.

Vientiane Night Market is located along the scenic waterfront in the city. The market usually gets going around sunset and you can come here to buy a range of items like clothes, textiles, accessories, handicrafts, paintings and myriad souvenirs.

Stroll around Patuxai Victory Monument.

Patuxai Victory Monument is one of the best-known landmarks in Vientiane and was designed to resemble the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. It is however also carved with symbols of Hindu Gods and has an additional five towers which resemble traditional Laotian buildings making this something of an East meets West kind of attraction. The monument is part of the wider Patuxai Park and this is a great place to come if you want to go for a serene walk at sunset. You can also take in the views across Vientiane from the top of the Patuxai Victory Monument either by climbing a set of stairs to the viewing platform or using an elevator.

Xieng Khuan.

Xieng Khuan is also known as Buddha Park and is some 25 kilometers outside Vientiane. As you would guess from the name, it is known for having more than 200 religious statues which are scattered all over the lush grounds. The piece de resistance here is a sculpture of a reclining Buddha which is some 40 meters high and the park was the brainchild of a monk who designed the area in 1958 and who was interested in both Hindu and Buddhist sculpture, which is why you will find a mix of different influences here. As you walk around to make sure to look out for the sculpture of Indra who is atop a three-headed elephant and who is considered to be the king of the gods in Hinduism.

10 Best Experiences in Laos according to Rough Guides

10 Best Experiences in Laos according to Rough Guides

10. Vieng Xai
Vieng Xai is a district and town in Hua Phan Province. The biggest attraction of the town is the caves. The former Pathet Lao Revolutionary headquarters of Vieng Xai sit in a striking valley of fertile hills and limestone cliffs riddled with caves, several of which were used to shelter PL officers during the second Indochina War.

9. Nam Ou
The Nam Ou is one of the most important rivers of Laos. It runs 448 km from Phongsaly Province to Luang Prabang Province. Along with the Mekong, the Nam Ou is the only natural channel suitable for large-draft boat transportation. Near its confluence with the Mekong are the Pak Ou Caves, famous for their Buddha statues.

8. Trekking
Rugged mountain forests set the scene for hikers seeking to explore the remote hill villages of the north.

7. Vang Vieng
Once little more than a bus stop on the long haul between Vientiane at the Thai border and the World Heritage Site of Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng has managed to become a destination in its own right and a popular stop on the unofficial Banana Pancake Trail. Still not much more than three streets and a bus station, the main attractions are the river, laid back countryside, and cave-filled rock formations.

6. Lao food
Lao cuisine is the cuisine of Laos, which is distinct from other Southeast Asian cuisines. The staple food of the Lao is steamed sticky rice, which is eaten by hand. In fact, the Lao eat more sticky rice than any other people in the world. Galangal, lemongrass and padaek (Lao fish sauce) are important ingredients.

5. Luang Prabang
Set at the confluence of two rivers that almost surround the town, and beneath a temple-topped hill, Luang Prabang is a wonderful patchwork of traditional Lao wooden houses and hints of European architecture, reminders of when Laos was part of the French colony of Indochine.

4. Waterfalls of the Bolaven Plateau
The Bolaven Plateau is an elevated region in southern Laos. The plateau is crossed by several rivers and has many scenic waterfalls. The name Bolaven makes reference to the Laven ethnic group which has historically dominated the region. The most popular places visited by tourists are the waterfalls in the region, the villages of the ethnic minorities, and other geopolitical areas of interest.

3. Plain of Jars
The Plain of Jars is a megalithic archaeological landscape in Laos. These stone jars appear in clusters, ranging from a single or a few to several hundred jars at lower foothills surrounding the central plain and upland valleys. The Plain of Jars is dated to the Iron Age (500 BC to AD 500) and is one of the most important sites for studying Southeast Asian prehistory.

2. Phongsali
It is the northernmost among provincial capitals in Laos opposite Attapeu in the south. In the centre of the town are houses built in Yunnanese style with ornate wooden fronts. A 400-year-old tea plantation is located about 18 kilometers away in the village of Ban Koma, which according to some tea experts has some of the oldest tea trees in the world.

1. A slow boat down the Mekong
The lifeline of this landlocked nation, the Mekong figures in every visit to Laos, supplying the fish for dinner, a stunning array of sunsets and a route to travel along.

Attapeu (Lao: ອັດຕະປື), also written as Attopu or Attapu, is the capital of Attapeu Province, Laos. It is the southernmost among provincial capitals in Laos opposite Phongsali in the north.

Transportation
Attapeu International Airport is located about 28 kilometres (17 mi) from Attapeu.[1] The airport opened in May 2015 but did not receive flights until April 2016, when Lao Airlines introduced flights from Vientiane via Pakse.[2] However, the airline withdrew from the market in October 2016 because of low passenger demand.[3] TTR Weekly attributed the airport's condition to the lack of nearby tourist attractions, even though commercial activity has risen due to Attapeu Province's proximity to Vietnam.[4]

Wat Phu in southern Laos

Wat Phu is a ruined Hindu temple complex located 30km away from Pakse city in the south of Laos.
It is an impressive Khmer Architect outside of Cambodia.
History suggested that it was built from the late 10th to early 11th centuries and if that's true then it's older than Angkor Watt in Siem Reap.

This ancient monument is one of the three UNESCO protected properties in Laos, the other two are Luang Prabang World Heritage Town and the Plain of Jar in in Xieng Kwang Province.
Wat Phu is the main attraction in Champasak Province, if you come to Pakse this is one of the many thing you should visit. And the best way to get there is by motorbike.

VANG VIENG | Family Travelling in Laos | LAOS' Eco-adventure Paradise // Blue Lagoons

When we visited Laos a few years ago, one of the places on our bucket list is Vang Vieng. We were on the quest to find out what more Vang Vieng has to offer other than being a party town. We had our daughter with us during this trip, so getting drunk while tubing down the Nam Song River was definitely not one we had on our to-do lists.

The Blue Lagoons in Vang Vieng was a great introduction to the paradise that Vang Vieng is. The Kaeng Nyui Waterfall was also an interesting spot, though a bit of a drive to get to. Topped it off kayaking down the Nam Song River, sober of course.

We came curious, we left very satisfied and wanting to experience more of what Vang Vieng can offer.

Exploring Luang Prabang, Laos: Beautiful City on the Mekong

Luang Prabang Travel Guide - Laos Charming Moments

Luang Prabang Travel Guide - Laos Charming Moments

Luang Prabang (ຫຼວງພຣະບາງ), also Luang Phabang, Luang Phrabang and Louang Phrabang is the former capital of Laos and is now a UNESCO World Heritage city. Set at the confluence of two rivers that almost surround the city, and beneath a temple-topped hill, Luang Prabang is a wonderful patchwork of traditional Lao wooden houses and hints of European architecture; reminders of when Laos was part of the French colony of Indochine. Golden-roofed wats, decorated with mosaics and murals of the life of Buddha, sit under the gaze of wrap-around teak balconies and 19th century shuttered windows. All of this is set against a backdrop of verdant greenery and rugged mountains.

As a visitor, you cannot help but be amazed by the tidiness and cleanliness of perhaps the most charming city in all of Southeast Asia. With UNESCO so closely involved and a largely responsible group of local business owners, the pressures of mass tourism development have been held at bay, but for how much longer remains to be seen. Restaurants along the main street tend to be expensive and aimed at luxury tourists, whilst lower cost venues are along the banks of the Mekong.

The reopening of Laos to tourism in 1989 resulted in a remarkable turnaround in the city's fortunes, as crumbling timber houses and colonial mansions were sensitively restored and transformed into immaculate guesthouses and boutique hotels. In 1995 the city was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Luang Prabang has both natural and historical sites. Among the natural tourism sites are the Kuang Si Falls, Tat Sae Waterfalls, and Pak Ou Caves. Elephant riding is offered at some sites. Phou Si, in the center of the town, has broad views of the town and river systems, and is a popular place to watch the sun setting over the Mekong River. At the end of the main street of Luang Prabang is a night market where stalls sell shirts, bracelets, and other souvenirs. The Haw Kham Royal Palace Museum and the Wat Xieng Thong temple are among the best known historical sites. The town, particularly the main street, is dotted with many smaller wats such as Wat Hosian Voravihane. Every morning at sunrise, monks walk in a procession through the streets accepting alms offered by local residents, an event popular with tourists. Mountain biking is quite common, with people often biking around the town or to the waterfalls for the day. Down the Mekong River, a 15-minute boat ride from the city centre, Ban Chan (the pottery village) is an interesting place. Luang Prabang received 'Best City' in the Wanderlust Travel Awards 2015.

Luang Prabang features a tropical wet and dry climate (Aw) under the Köppen climate classification. While the city is generally very warm throughout the year, it is noticeably cooler during December and January. Luang Prabang is served by Luang Prabang International Airport with non-stop flights to adjoining countries. Luang Prabang is linked by Route 13 with Vang Vieng and Vientiane, and by Route 1 with Muang Xay. Route 13 also connects the city to Cambodia.
