ASBURY PARK, NJ -- Besides sand, surf and Springsteen, Asbury Park has been known in recent years as a hub for the New Jersey LGBTQ community. HomeGrown Host Stephanie Willoughby spoke with Comedian & Activist Jess Alaimo about the LGBTQ-friendly atmosphere of Asbury Park. Alaimo grew up in Asbury Park, where she still lives, and has family roots here. She founded the Asbury Park Young Democrats and the Asbury Park Women’s Convention.
“Probably the most amazing thing about Asbury Park,” Alaimo said, “is that you come to Asbury and you’re welcome. It’s so inclusive and it’s a beautiful place for that.”
“The LGBTQ community really lent its hand to reviving Asbury Park,” Alaimo said. In the 1990s, the town was largely depressed until members of the LGBTQ community began moving in, renovating homes and reopening shuttered storefronts. Today, Garden State Equality, New Jersey’s largest LGBTQ advocacy organization, is headquartered here, the town boasts many LGBTQ-owned businesses, and the city is thriving.

Asbury Park - a great place to shop, dine, go to the theatre, stroll the boardwalk or enjoy the beach and surf. The city has a wonderful downtown mixed with Zagat-rated restaurants and clubs with a mix of art galleries, antique and retail shops. On the first Saturday of each month, they celebrate First Saturday Asbury Park and the restaurants and shops are open late for visitors to come and enjoy.
