மதுரை-தூத்துக்குடி இடையே தற்போதுள்ள 159 கி.மீ. தூர ரயில் பாதை நெல்லை வழித்தடத்தில் வாஞ்சி மணியாச்சி வரை சென்று அங்கிருந்து மீளவிட்டான் வழியாக தூத்துக்குடியை சென்றடைகிறது. பேருந்து பயணத்தைவிட ரயில் பயணம் ஒரு மணி நேரம் கூடுதல் என்பதுடன் தூரமும் அதிகம்.
அருப்புக்கோட்டை வழியாக மதுரை–தூத்துக்குடி இடையே புதிய அகல ரயில் பாதை திட்டம் கொண்டு வரப்பட்டது.
* கடந்த 1999-2000-ம் ஆண்டு ரயில்வே பட்ஜெட்டில் அருப்புக்கோட்டை வழியாக மதுரை-தூத்துக்குடி இடையே புதிய ரயில் பாதை அமைக்கப்படும் என அறிவிக்கப்பட்டது.

* ரயில்வே அதிகாரிகள் கூறியதாவது: மதுரை-தூத்துக்குடி இடையேயான 143 கி.மீ. தூரத்தில் தூத்துக்குடி-மீளவிட்டான் வரை ஏற்கெனவே ரயில் பாதை உள்ளது. அருப்புக்கோட்டை வழியாக மீளவிட்டான்-திருப்பரங்குன்றத்துக்கு சுமார் 134 கி.மீ. தொலைவுக்கு புதிய பாதை அமைக்க வேண்டும்.
* மதுரை-தூத்துக்குடி இடையே 10 புதிய ரயில் நிலையங்கள் உருவாக்கப்படுகின்றன.
* அருப்புக்கோட்டை முக்கிய சந்திப்பு நிலையமாக மாற்றப்படும்.
* தூத்துக்குடியில் மட்டுமே 80 ஹெக்டேர் கையகப்படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளது. மீள விட்டான்-மேல்மருதூர் வரை பணிகள் முடிவடைந்து இருப்புப்பாதை தயாராக உள்ளது, 17kms...
