Artena
Artena is a town of particular historical and monumental interest. Situated deep in the Sacco Valley, on the northern flank of the Lepini Mountains, it was known as Monte Furtino until 1873. Destroyed by the Romans in 401 BC, there are still fragments of the polygonal walls which surrounded an area of about 30 hectares where there are remains of the Roman city and two large gates. The historical centre is Medieval in appearance, and has an unusual urban structure, the roads being mainly steps, forcing the inhabitants to travel on foot or to use donkeys to transport goods or persons. The austere Borghese Palace, built in the 12th century, is in the historical centre. This town, abundant in vegetation and chestnut trees, is today a busy centre for archaeologists and experts, who continue to excavate the area, bringing traces of an ancient civilisation to light.
