ALGARVE, PORTUGAL | 10 Incredible Places To Visit In The Algarve

The Algarve is the southernmost region of continental Portugal. Thanks to its year-round sunny weather and beautiful rugged coastline, it’s one of the most popular holiday destinations in all of Europe. In this video we highlight 10 diverse places to visit in the Algarve:

10. Sagres
Sitting at the westernmost tip of the Algarve, Sagres is the wildest and most untamed destination. Windswept, barren landscapes, towering cliffs, and rough waters are what set this place apart.

9. Portimão
Visit the Portimão museum if you want to learn more about its fishing and canning tradition, or go to the medieval Fort of Santa Catarina de Ribamar for panoramic views. But the biggest draw is undoubtedly Portimão’s nearby Praia da Rocha.

8. Faro & Ria Formosa
From cobblestone streets and cozy squares to a wide range of lagoons and wetlands, Faro boasts a blend of city and nature activities. We really enjoyed a boat tour in the Ria Formosa Natural Park, which is home to canals, marshland and small islands.

☑️ Book a boat tour:

7. Aljezur & West Coast Beaches
With wide-open beaches and sheer sea cliffs, the West Coast of the Algarve is a true hidden gem. It’s also another prime destination for surfing. We recommend Arrifana Beach if you’re a beginner or intermediate surfer.

6. Fishermen’s Village Ferragudo
With its white houses reaching down to the river, walking around this authentic fishing town is an experience in itself. But Praia Grande is also a great place to relax and enjoy watersports.

5. Lagos & Ponta da Piedade
Lagos has a wide range of cafés and restaurants to choose from, but also some historical sights, such as castle walls, churches, and a fort. Combine this with its spectacular coastline, filled with steep cliffs, caves, and grottoes, and you’ve got one of the most scenic destinations in the Algarve.

4. Serra de Monchique
Apart from beautiful beaches, the Algarve is also home to a rolling mountain range. The town of Monchique lies in pristine nature, surrounded by lush green forests. It’s an idyllic and authentic mountain town with sweeping vistas and a network of nature trails.

☑️ Book a tour to Monchique and Silves with Algarve Jipe Safari:

3. Silves
This historic town cascades down the hill, flowing out from beneath the beautiful Silves Castle (Castelo de Silves). Enjoy your time learning about the town’s history inside the castle walls as well as on the cobbled streets surrounding it.

2. The 7 Hanging Valleys
This 12km out-and-back hike takes between 4 to 6 hours to complete if you do the full route, and includes views of the Atlantic ocean as well as limestone rock formations. There is some elevation gain and loss as you climb up and down each of the valleys, but overall the hike is easy to moderate.

1. Benagil Cave
The Benagil Cave is a world-class natural attraction in the Algarve. Although it’s only a short distance from Benagil Beach, you still need a kayak, stand up paddle board, or guided boat tour to reach the caves safely.

Costa Vicentina | Arrifana | Algarve

Beaches of the Costa Vicentina, Algarve west coast
When you think of a beach or seaside holiday in the Algarve, you immediately see in your mind the picturesque bays with their typical rock formations, caves and grottos, which are visited by masses of people in the summer months.

However, those who prefer deserted beaches and wild nature to the crowded beaches of the western Algarve will find a wonderfully beautiful natural paradise with natural beaches and magnificent dunes in the south-west of the Algarve in the nature reserve of Costa Vicentina. The barren and rough coastal landscape between Sagres and Odeceixe, especially, is dotted with steep cliffs and headlands, from which one can get an incomparable view down into bays and across endless sandy beaches. Often, the narrow paths from the main roads to the beaches meander endlessly through the countryside towards the sea, until they suddenly provide you with views of a beautiful coast.

Between Carrapateira and Aljezur lies the small fishing village of Arrifana with its beautiful beach, Praia do Arrifana, which is situated in a shell-shaped bay. The beach is narrow, no more than 700 metres, and is protected by imposing black slate rocks. From the northern tip of the beach, you have a panoramic view of the ruins of the fortress of Arrifana..

At the northern end of the beach, next to the fishing port, there are good conditions for diving. The beach is also popular with surfers and bodyboarders. However, the Praia do Arrifana is classified as a beach with limited use, because due to the high rock walls at the back there is danger of falling rocks.

Arrifana Beach Aljezur Algarve Portugal

This beach is located in a beautiful cove in the shape of a shell, sheltered from the cold north and swells of the north, associated with a small fishing village.

The sand is extensive, with more than 500 meters, it is bordered by imposing black cliffs, carved in schist. Looking south, a dark and narrow gravel rising from the sea stands out in the landscape; it is the Pedra da Agulha that has become an icon of the Vincentian coast.

There are good conditions for diving at the northern end of the beach, next to the fishing port, which is also one of the best beaches for surfing and bodyboarding. The panoramic view of the Fortress of Arrifana (currently in ruins), at the top of the northern cliff, is breathtaking.

At Ponta da Atalaia, famous for its barnacles, there are traces of a Muslim Ribat, a convent-fortress of great archaeological value.

Note: Given the possibility of landslides and rocks coming off, it is recommended that you keep a safe distance from the cliffs.

Road access is tarmacked from the southern entrance to Aljezur (EN 120), heading towards the beach for approximately 8 km. Ample and orderly parking at the top of the cliff, before heading down to the beach. Restricted road traffic and parking next to the beach. Support equipment (restaurant, toilet and recreational support – surf school) and surveillance during the bathing season. Orientation: west / southwest.
GPS: 37° 17' 41.06 N 8°51' 58.61 W

The Fortress of Arrifana is a military monument, located in the town of Arrifana, in the municipality of Aljezur, in the Algarve region, in Portugal. It was built in 1635 to protect the coastal strip in the Arrifana area, having been the subject of several rebuilding works throughout its history, mainly after the destruction caused by the 1755 earthquake. It went into decline at the end of the 18th century, and in 1861 was already completely abandoned. The fortress is located on a promontory, about 70 m above sea level.

Top Ten Best Beaches in Algarve, Portugal. The Algarve, Portugal’s southernmost region, is known for its Atlantic beaches and golf resorts. Whitewashed fishing villages on low cliffs overlooking sandy coves were transformed in the 1960s, and now its central coast between Lagos and Faro is lined with villas, hotels, bars and restaurants. The region's western Atlantic coast and rugged interior are less developed.

Most beautiful beach in Costa Vicentina????‍♂️Arrifana Beach - Praia da Arrifana . Aljezur - 4K UltraHD

Arrifana beach is in a kind of bay and is protected by rocks from the north winds. The difficult accesses make this a unique place, for those who want to rest and for those who prefer to challenge the waves.
It is said to be the most beautiful beach on the entire Costa Vicentina. As such, it is one of the best on the national coast, due to its unique location and the conditions it offers in terms of rest and radical activities. It is only half a kilometer long, between rocks, the most emblematic of which is to the south, and is called “Pedra da Agulha”, reminiscent of a gigantic statuette erected in the middle of the waters.

Surf in the Algarve: Sharing Waves and Experiences in the South of Portugal

The Algarve – and more specifically the stunning area surrounding Aljezur, on the south-west coast of Portugal – has always held a special place in The Surf Tribe’s hearts. It was after falling in love with Arrifana and the Costa Vicentina the we decided to organize our first surf trip there in the Autumn of 2019. This is where our adventure got started and every year we come back here, gather with the tribe and spend some months surfing and sharing good times.

Here are some of the good times sharing waves and experiences with guests and friends from all over the world.
