Places to see in ( Wurzburg‎ - Germany ) St Kilian Cathedral

Würzburg Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Würzburg in Bavaria, Germany, dedicated to Saint Kilian. It is the seat of the Bishop of Würzburg and has served as the burial place for the Prince-Bishops of Würzburg for hundreds of years. With an overall length of 103 metres, it is reckoned to be the fourth largest Romanesque church building in Germany, and a masterpiece of German architecture from the Salian period. Notable later additions include work by Tilman Riemenschneider and Balthasar Neumann. The cathedral was heavily damaged by British bombs in March 1945 but rebuilt post-World War II.

The present cathedral was built from 1040 onwards by Bishop Bruno of Würzburgis. It likely was the third church on the site: the previous two, built in about 787 and 855, were respectively destroyed and severely damaged by fire. After Bruno's accidental death in 1045, his successor Adalbero completed the building in 1075. Due to several rebuildings, notably after 1133, the cathedral was only consecrated in 1187. This church already had the strong cross lay-out still present today: a long nave with a high choir, the broad transept and the two narrow western towers.

The greater part of the building collapsed in the winter of 1946 in consequence of the fire bombing of Würzburg on 16 March 1945. Reconstruction was completed in 1967, in the course of which the Baroque components were removed in favour of a re-Romanisation. The new interpretation emphasizes the contrast between the surviving historical parts of the structure, resulting in a sometimes controversial combination of predominantly Romanesque with modern and Baroque elements. The Romanesque Revival west front with a rose window, the tripartite gallery and the opening for the clock were combined during the reconstruction with a plain pumice stone wall, and revealed again during renovation work up to November 2006. In 1988 the choir was redesigned by Hubert Elsässer.

A Visit to Frickenhausen am Main, Germany

Frickenhausen am Main is a small town South-East of Wurzurg in Germany.

I spent just one night in Frickenhausen am Main as I was looking for a quiet and peaceful place to stay after exploring Wurzburg.

The small town is located right on the Main River and is easily accessed by a local highway that runs right through the heart of the town.

There are a few small hotels and a couple of different restaurants in Frickenhausen am Main and along with the wineries nearby it's a nice place to spend a day or two just relaxing and enjoying the weather.

I stayed at the Hotel Weingut Meintzinger and I would definitely recommend checking it out if you're going to be in the area.

The town is quite nice with a few defensive towers and other structures still remaining. There is a lovely walkway along the river and you can still spot some medieval timber framed buildings as well.

Top-Wanderung Sächsische Schweiz : Arnstein - Kleinsteinhöhle - Pohlshorn -Teichstein

Wir beginnen unser Wanderung in der sächsischen Schweiz heute im Kirnitschtal, vom großen Parkplatz an der Neumannmühle aus. Zunächst geht es an der Kirnitsch aufwärts zur Buschmühle. Hier folgen wir dem markierten Weg nordwärts zum Arnstein und erklimmen über Felsstiegen das Ottendorfer Raubschloß. Oben erwarten uns weitere nette Felsen und Höhlchen. Nach deren Besichtigung gehen wir wieder ein Stück zurück bis zum Abzweig des Malerweges. Nun geht es entlang des Hanges von Kirnitsch und bald über dem Saupsdorfer Bach weiter bis zur gewaltigen Kleinsteinhöhle, eigentlich ein Felstor. Nach dem Abstieg von der Kleinsteinhöhle folgen wir dem Saupsdorfer Bach noch ein kleines Stück weiter als wir müssten, bis zur Wanderertränke bei Räumicht.
Nun steigen wir auf der anderen Talseite steil durch die Mühlschlüchte auf, passieren das kleine Pohlshorn und erklimmen im Anschluss die Aussichtskanzel auf dem großen Pohlshorn. Auf der anderen Seite des Gipfels steigen wir weiter ab, queren die Kirnitsch und steigen auf der anderen Uferseite hinauf auf den Flügel F, der in Richtung Zeughaus führt. Kurz zuvor jedoch biegen wir rechts ab und folgen den Steigeinlagen hinauf auf den einsamen Gipfel des Teichstein
Hier genießen wir den tollen Aussichtsblick und steigen im Anschluß wieder auf den Flügel F den wir dann im Starkregen und Hagel über Buschmühle wieder zum Startunkt an der Neumannmühle folgen
Eine Runde die recht einsam war und uns sehr gut gefallen hat!´.

Sächsische Schweiz / Urlaub in Deutschland

Insgesamt 10 Nächte verbrachten wir bei „Camping Thorwaldblick“ in Hinterhermsdorf. Ein wirklich sehr schöner familiärer Campingplatz mit allem was man braucht. Vom Platz aus kann direkt mit seiner Wanderung starten oder mit dem Bus (Haltestelle direkt am Campingplatz) in andere Wandergebiete fahren. Alles ist sehr gepflegt, die Preise sind angemessen und auch sonst lässt der Platz keine Wünsche offen. Wir haben uns sehr wohl gefühlt.

Die sächsische Schweiz ist ein wunderschönes Wandergebiet und so verbrachten wir unsere Zeit hauptsächlich damit, die Gegend zu Fuß zu erkunden.

Viele unserer Wanderungen verliefen zum Teil auf dem 112 Kilometer langen „Malerweg“ der zu den schönsten Wanderwegen in Deutschland zählt.
Bei einer anderen Wanderung schauten wir uns die wunderschöne „Kirnitzschklamm“ an, die sich an der Grenze zu Tschechien befindet. An der oberen Schleuse kann man, wenn gewünscht, eine ca. 20 Minuten lange Kahnfahrt machen. Wir haben die Alternative gewählt und sind über den „Flößersteig“ entlang der „Kirnitzschklamm“ gewandert.
Die anderen Tage unternahmen wir Wanderungen zu folgenden Sehenswürdigkeiten: Kleines & großes Pohlshorn, großer Teichstein, Kleinsteinhöhle, Arnstein und zum kleinen Winterberg. Eines haben alle diese Ziele gemeinsam, man wird mit einer wunderschönen Aussicht belohnt. Die Wege dorthin sind recht einfach gehalten, allerdings ist es bei vielen dieser Ziele erforderlich über eine Leiter zu steigen. Das könnte, besonders bei einem größeren Hund, zu Problemen führen.

Außerdem schauten wir uns noch die nähere Umgebung in „Hinterhermsdorf“ an und machten einen Abstecher zum „Weifbergturm“ der sich ganz in der Nähe befindet. Von ganz oben hat man natürlich eine tolle Aussicht und es ist für jede Himmelsrichtung eine Karte vorhanden auf der man gut nachvollziehen kann, was genau man denn dort in der Ferne überhaupt sieht.

Die „Schrammsteinaussicht“ in Bad Schandau ist auf jeden Fall auch einen Besuch wert. Den Weg dorthin kombinierten wir mit einer kleinen Einkaufstour (die eh fällig war) und parkten auf einem der vielen Wanderparkplätze ganz in der Nähe. Von dort aus wanderten wir ca. eine Stunde bis zum Aussichtspunkt. Der Ausblick dort oben ist wirklich toll, allerdings ist der Ort sehr gut besucht. Wir waren am späten Nachmittag dort, das war ok.

Nun war unsere Zeit in der sächsischen Schweiz auch leider schon vorbei und wir machten uns auf zu unserem nächsten Ziel, zum „Spreewald“. Auf dem Weg dorthin machten wir noch einen Zwischenstopp an der „Basteibrücke“ in Lohmen. Ein großer Parkplatz ist vorhanden (kostenpflichtig).
Die „Basteibrücke“ ist definitiv kleiner als wir erwartet hatten aber wunderschön. Es gibt mehrere Aussichtspunkte von denen man tolle Fotos von der Brücke, von der Landschaft und von der Elbe machen kann. Dieser Zwischenstopp hat sich für uns auf jeden Fall gelohnt, auch wenn dieser „Touristenmagnet“ natürlich sehr gut besucht ist.
