The most beautiful Serbian Monasteries and Churches

Unique in their architecture, sculpture and ornamentation, frescoes, icons, manuscripts and numerous works of applied art, the monasteries of Serbia have long been a focus of attention for tourists and mediaeval art experts alike.

The architecture of mediaeval Serbian monasteries is particularly varied. During the 13thand into the 14thcentury some of the most striking churches were built, whose proportions and decorative façade and sculptural work suggest Romanesque influence (Studenica, Banjska, Dečani, Gradac, Arilje, Mileševa, Sopoćani and others). These are referred to as belonging to the Raška School. The first half of the 14thcentury during the reign of King Milutin saw the construction of works of exceptional architecture and artwork, such as Gračanica.

The period after 1371 saw the rise of a characteristic architectural style called the Morava School in the Morava river valley, with its multicoloured façades and decorative relief work, (e.g. Ravanica, Lazarica, Ljubostinja and Kalenić).

Mediaeval monasteries and churches are not just features on the landscape of Serbia, they are features of the soul of Serbia, as well as being art galleries in a very real sense. The frescoes and icons in Serbia’s churches are a significant part of Serbia’s cultural, historical and national wealth.

One of the greatest Serbian Orthodox holy places is Hilandar, a Serbian monastery located on the northern part of the ‘Holy Mountain’ of Mount Athos –a‘monastic republic’ formed of 20 major monasteries, situated on the third leg of the Halkidiki peninsula in northern Greece. The monastery of Hilandar was built by Stefan Nemanja and his sons, the monk Sava and Stefan Prvovenčani (‘the First-Crowned’) in 1198......

Saint Achillius Church, (Serbian Cyrillic: Црква светог Ахилија) is a church in Arilje, Serbia. It is dedicated to the Saint Achillius from Larissa (Greece), fighter against Arianism and participants of the First Council of Nicaea in 325. God made him celebrat victory over Arianism, making a miracle to Achillius confession of the truth water runs from stone.[1] Saint Achillius Church is built in 1296, and it is closely related to House of Nemanjić, the first Serbian archbishop Saint Sava and unfortunate King Dragutin, and St. Achillios church is his endowment. With its unreal whiteness and thinness still dominates the town core of Arilje.
According to its architectural properties, it belong to Raška Architectural Style, which marked the XIII century, coherent joint processing Romanesque exterior and Byzantine spatial concept. Imaging facade in the style of Byzantine cells unity, construction techniques alternating rows of stone and brick, the wall is finished the Romanesque Saint Achillius Church in Arilje make unique civil engineering in the thirteenth century of the total area of Byzantine world.
In addition to architectural value and historic significance, the church stands out as a gallery of precious frescoes. The most interesting part of the fresco-assembly make portraits of rulers from the Nemanjić, their relatives and all the archbishops of the founding of the independent Serbian church. Most attractive portraits in the southern part of the inner narthex, standing figure of King Dragutin patrons with the model of the church in the hands of the fresco above the tomb of Dragutin's younger son Urošić, who died young as a monk. As an unambiguous document, the kings of donor activities and illustration of mutual respect (at the time of painting the church brothers lived in harmony), one of the most beautiful idealized portrait is a portrait of royal brothers Milutin and Dragutin Nemanjić accompanied by Dragutin's wife, Arpad Princess of Hungary Katalin.
For the first time in the history of Serbian fresco-paintings appears a new iconographic solution. Until then, it was common for the donor or the Virgin performances brought patron saint protector of Christ on the throne, bowed his head with the model of the temple in his hands. Fresco of St. Archangel Gabriel, called The Blue Angel, St. noble character in brilliant, simple Tunica, the incarnation of the Lord of Trustees fanciful ideas of beauty and magnificence of nobility. Certainly set a figure of Archangel, clearly marked characters with strong muscles and a rich gown of warriors, is very artistic value. This fresco is classified in the narrowest circle of masterpieces of Serbian paintings. Historical importance have portraits of Dragutin's sons - Vladislav and Urošić and present members of the Serbian church and Nemanjić vines and moravičkih portraits of bishops and metropolitan's, are one of the most important group of wall paintings through which recognize the interesting characters of the Serbian past. Authors of Arilje frescoes are not known by name, but we know that they originated from Thessaloniki. The stylistic and iconographic terms of the paintings is a work that announces a milestone in the development of Serbian mural painting.
What Saint Achillius Church clearly distinguished from other Nemanjić endowment built in this era is in addition to his height and lack of a specific aspect of the belfry tower of the outer narthex, which is characteristic of all the Bishops office, entrance on the south side instead of the usual western. Unlike other Nemanjić churches built in the XII and XIII century, which were not cathedral temples dedicated to many believers, the church in Arilje had that purpose, and it was built on the hill from which it was visible from afar. At the time of Emperor Dušan, Moravički diocese was elevated in the rank of Metropolitanate, after the proclamation of Serbian Patriarchate in 1346. Metropolis in Arilje monastery brotherhood and shared the fate of his people and country in a terrible rush of the Turks led by Mehmed II the Conqueror of Constantinople. They had to go nearly two centuries to the end of the forties seventeenth century revived again in the metropolistanate Moravica. Arilje bells will ring no sooner than in 1833. But this time not from the metropolitanet, but the parish church. Church of Sv. Achillius was declared Monument of Culture of Exceptional Importance in 1979, and it is protected by Republic of Serbia.
In the church Dragutin's younger son, Prince Urošic was buried. This fact indicates the importance of the temple for the king and the possibility that some of the courts was located in the vicinity of Arilje.
The church is located in the center of town, on the elevated plateau above the large river valley and the river Moravica and Big Rzav and represents the most dominant object in the Arilje perspective.

Devil's Town In ???????? Serbia | Blue Moon Universe |

Đavolja varoš (Serbian Cyrillic: Ђавоља варош, lit. Devil's Town) is a rock formation consisting of about 200 earth pyramids or towers, located in southern Serbia on the Radan Mountain, in the municipality of Kuršumlija.Đavolja Varoš (Serbian for “the devil's town”) is an unusual rock formation created by soil erosion, near the town of Kuršumlija in southeastern Serbia. A local legend holds that the strangely shaped rocks are the remains of a wedding party that was instantaneously petrified by the devil, as punishment.Devils Tower is made of phonolite porphyry. Phonolite porphyry is an igneous rock, meaning it was formed as magma or lava cooled. As the magma that formed Devils Tower cooled, it condensed into columns. From Kuršumlija we recommend taking a taxi to Djavolja varoš. If you are in the mood for a walk or hiking, you can get to Djavolja varoš by foot from Prolom banja using the “staza zdravlja” (path of health), over the Prolom mountain, which are 9 km long, it would take you around two and a half hours.

Day Trip to Devil's Town

Devil's Town, one of the many wonders of the world is situated in southernmost Serbia, 17 miles from the town of Kursumlija, on the slopes of Mt Radan, which boasts a large number of mineral and thermal springs. Due to a high concentration of minerals, the whole area is destitute of vegetation. The land there easily erodes and creates mischievous landscapes. Devil's Town apparently consists of 202 earthen figures,Six feet to 45 feet tall, all wearing caps on the top. Actually, those are andesite plates – rocks created in an intense volcanic eruption of millions of years ago. For centuries, they have been pressing the soil, which gradually changed its appearance and was transformed into figures of various odd shapes and dimensions.
