Antofagasta, también conocida como La Perla del norte, es una ciudad, puerto y comuna del Norte Grande de Chile y es la capital de la provincia y de la región homónima. Según el censo de 2017, realizado por el INE, es la sexta ciudad más poblada del país y la comuna más poblada fuera de la Región Metropolitana con 361.873 habitantes,2 por detrás de Santiago, Valparaíso, Concepción, la conurbación La Serena-Coquimbo y Gran Temuco, aunque solo representa el 2,1 % de la población total del país.2 Las principales actividades industriales de Antofagasta se encuentran íntimamente ligadas a la minería. En las últimas décadas, desde los años 70, ha presentado un sostenido crecimiento en las áreas relativas a la construcción, comercio y hotelería, además de un notable desarrollo urbano.
Antofagasta es considerada la ciudad con el mayor ingreso per cápita de Chile alcanzando los 37.000 dólares.4 Su importante desarrollo se debe a las actividades portuarias e industriales, ligadas a la minería que se realiza en la zona, contando con un Barrio Industrial que se caracteriza por poseer instalaciones con tecnología de primera línea. Según estudios, ha sido catalogada como la ciudad más cara para vivir del país.56
Antofagasta cuenta con un gran complejo deportivo del cual fue subsede de la Copa América 2015 y del cual posiblemente sea sede en la Copa Mundial de Fútbol de 2030. En la ciudad también se llevan a cabo otras competiciones nacionales y regionales siendo el fútbol el deporte que más público atrae.
Las agradables condiciones climáticas de la ciudad la convierten en destino obligado por visitantes, quienes pueden disfrutar de múltiples servicios turísticos, de atractivos paisajes, centros comerciales, playas de aguas cálidas y suave oleaje, y también de monumentos históricos y naturales.

10. La Serena.
The second oldest town in Chile is located in the north. It features a warm golden beach and a city filled with beautiful architecture. An archaeological museum and an astronomical observatory are just a couple of the fantastic attractions in La Serena that live up to its reputation as an educated town.
9. Santiago.
The political and cultural center of Chile is the capital city. There is a lot to see in Santiago, from the expansive mountain views of Cerro San Cristobal Park to the historical significance of poet Pablo Neruda's writing hideaway.
8. Chiloe Island.

San Pedro de Atacama is a Chilean town and commune in El Loa Province, Antofagasta Region. It is located east of Antofagasta, some 106 km (60 mi) southeast of Calama and the Chuquicamata copper mine, overlooking the Licancabur volcano. It features a significant archeological museum, the R. P. Gustavo Le Paige Archaeological Museum, with a large collection of relics and artifacts from the region. Native ruins nearby attract increasing numbers of tourists interested in learning about pre-Columbian cultures
Demographics
According to the 2002 census of the National Statistics Institute, San Pedro de Atacama had 4,969 inhabitants (2,928 males and 2,041 females). Of these, 1,938 (39%) lived in urban areas and 3,031 (61%) in rural areas. The population grew by 75.6% (2,140 persons) between the 1992 and 2002 censuses.[1]
