New Haven, CT - 10 fun things to do

Part college town, part foodie oasis, part artist’s sanctuary, part history-buff heaven - there’s something for everyone to discover in New Haven.
Yale University brings brick and ivy, along with more than 10,000 college and graduate students every year, to the city in its sprawling campus. The university also offers endless cultural opportunities. Yale’s Art Gallery hosts works by the likes of Wassily Kandinsky and Mark Rothko. Students from university’s drama school regularly host productions at the Yale Repertory Theater.
Off campus, New Haven offers its residents a plethora of dining and entertainment options. The birthplace of the hamburger and American-style pizza, properly called apizza, New Haven has a great variety of high-end dining and ethnic eateries. Enjoy nationally-recognized Spanish tapas at Olea or head to Little Italy near Wooster Square to try out the unique apizza for yourself. Taste of New Haven even offers several weekly restaurant and bar tours so you can get a little taste of everything New Haven has to offer.
Entertainment is in no short supply in New Haven, as well, with many arts, theater and music spots in the city. Artspace, a warehouse of mini-galleries, anchors the arts district in New Haven, but there are many other former warehouses that have become artists’ studios. Beyond student theater, the historic Shubert Theater has a robust history and once premiered many theatrical productions even before Broadway. And there’s Criterion Cinemas for both popular and independent films. New Haven has a vibrant alternative music scene, as well, with small venues regularly holding concerts in the city.
If history is your thing, you won’t need to walk much beyond the New Haven Green in the heart of the city. There are three churches open for viewing on the Green, including the Center Church where you can even tour the basement crypt which dates back to the early 1800s. The Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library even houses an original Gutenberg Bible. Also on the Green are annual jazz and music festivals for everyone to enjoy.
The City and region are experiencing a surge in economic development. People are enjoying New Haven for its culture, restaurants and nigh life. This renaissance has spurred many new housing and shopping projects making the downtown a great place to live and work.

Stratford CT drive around tour short beach and Sea Wall

From Website..About Stratford
Founded in 1639, Stratford is a community rich in history, and abundant natural beauty.

Interactive map & directions
Situated on Long Island Sound, and bounded to the east by the Housatonic River, Stratford has long viewed its waterfront as an important natural resource. The Town's location on Long Island Sound affords residents and visitors alike with two public bathing beaches, five marinas, several fishing piers and two public boat-launching facilities.

Within an hour's drive of New York City, Stratford is the easternmost town in Fairfield County-Connecticut's Gold Coast. Major highways such as I-95, Route 8/25 and the Merritt Parkway bisect Stratford, and provide convenient access to the entire Northeast corridor. The deep water harbor of neighboring Bridgeport provide excellent docking and terminal facilities for either domestic or overseas shipping, in addition to ferry passenger service to Long Island. Sikorsky Memorial Airport, located in the Lordship section of Stratford, remains a hub of corporate activity and provides commuter service to other cities in the northeast. Rail service provided by Metro North with connections to Amtrak further round out an excellent array of transportation choices.

Igor Sikorsky - First Flight of the VS-3000, September 14, 1939

Stratford has a long association with the aviation industry. Stratford became the birthplace of the American helicopter industry, when in 1939, a Russian immigrant, Igor Sikorsky, successfully flew the first helicopter at his Stratford-based aircraft plant. More than a half-century later, Sikorsky Aircraft, the world's leading helicopter manufacturer, still designs and produces state-of-the art helicopters for both military and commercial applications at its sprawling manufacturing facility on Stratford's north side. Drawn by a highly skilled and productive work force, excellent access to transportation, and a large inventory of affordable housing, it's no surprise that many businesses have chosen to call Stratford home.

The diversity of Stratford's natural resources is as rich as its cultural heritage, ranging from the 250-acre, town-owned Roosevelt Forest to the Great Meadows Salt Marsh, one of the largest unditched salt marshes remaining in New England and now a portion of the Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge. Stratford is host to a variety of cultural attractions as well, including the soon to be revitalized Shakespeare Theatre and Boothe Memorial Park, a municipally-owned park and museum showcasing an assortment of architecturally-unique structures and vast collection of Americana.

SeeMore of Ansonia & Abandoned Farrel Co.

Stops in Seymour, then Ansonia, CT to visit the amazing Farrel Foundry & Machine Corp.

Hard to imagine spending millions for any type of redevelopment at this or any location along the Naugatuck, to be left with a front row seat or within sniffing distance of such a polluted, noxious, and foul smelling waterway - especially at the falls in Seymour. So sad.

I was looking forward to a nice viewing experience after reading the Naugatuck River Greenway sign at the Tingue Dam ( the falls ) : “A Regional Vision”, and the Remarkable Recovery part, complete with the come back claim referring to a cleaned up river. The reality is: this river is as polluted as it has been for decades. This is no destination for anglers or paddlers.

As a dis-service to Paul Pawlak, Sr., ( no mention about his local contributions anywhere ) the fish bypass ladder, which was named after him, was so dry, fish would have to walk up it to get to the next level. Large bushes had grown in the ladder channel as further evidence it had not flowed water for years. I suspect now, it wasn't needed anyway since no fish could possibly survive in those waters, nor would anyone upstream, want to catch or eat them. We need more people like Judge George Wheeler ( R.I.P.):

Jack Delano was one of eleven photographers employed by the Farm Security Administration - Office of War Information, to document the U.S. war effort ( WWII ) in these industrial towns and their factories. He took the black and whites featured here in Nov. 1940.

His pictures, used as a part of this video, were copied from the Library of Congress web site - Prints & Photographs Division,. They serve to show how hard, dangerous and dirty working at a foundry - this foundry - can be, and to honor those that did that work.

FROM WEBSITE....
Seaside Park History
Summertime is high season for Seaside Park; Bridgeport's premiere waterside destination. Seaside is open daily from 8 AM - Dusk (current hours). Parks Stickers are required to access the park by car. Cyclists can enjoy a dedicated cycling path. For more information on parks stickers look here: Parks Stickers

Buses entering Seaside need a bus permit: more details. Permits can be purchased in advance at the parks office, or at the park checkpoints.

With its 325 acres of lush lawns, shady glades and sports fields rolling toward Long Island Sound, Seaside Park is a park without peer on the Eastern Seaboard. Visitors are delighted by the beaches, surf and sunshine along three miles of sparkling coastline. The park was laid out just after the Civil War by Calvert Vaux and Frederick Law Olmsted, whose other efforts include Manhattan's Central Park and Prospect Park in Brooklyn. Their 19th century landscapes have proved timeless as they entice each new generation of park-goers.
At the western end of the park is Fayerweather Island. Walkers can visit this natural wildlife preserve by crossing the breakwater rocks. The island's lighthouse guided navigators into Black Rock Harbor from 1823 to 1932.

Bridgeport's most famous resident, the 19th century circus impresario P.T. Barnum is largely responsible for the development of the park. Once pasture land, wood lots and salt marshes, Barnum envisioned the first marine “rural” park in the United States. He recalled the landscape of Seaside before its transformation in his autobiography:

“Up to 1865 the shore of Bridgeport west of the public wharves, and washed by the water of Long Island Sound, was inaccessible to carriages or even to the horsemen, and almost impossible for pedestrians. The shore edge was in fact strewn with rocks and boulders, which made it like “JORDAN” in the song, and exceedingly “hard road to travel.” A narrow lane reaching down to the shore enabled parties to drive near to the water for purposes of clamming, and occasionally bathing; but it was all claimed as private property by the land proprietors, whose farm extended down to the water's edge... I was satisfied that a most lovely park might be, and ought to be, opened along the whole waterfront as far as the western boundary line of Bridgeport... I immediately began to agitate the subject in the Bridgeport papers, and also in daily conversations with such of my fellow citizens as I thought would take an earnest and immediate interest in the enterprise...”

The park took its present shape between 1865 and 1920. Before 1869 the land west of the statue of Elias Howe was under water. The area between Park and Iranistan Avenue was the first to be drained and dyked. (The Mirror Lake, also known as the Mummy Pond, is an essential part of that drainage system.) In 1878, the land between Iranistan Avenue and the former bath house took its present form. The city acquired the water-bound area that comprises the west beach and Fayerweather Island in 1911, and completed construction of a seawall in 1919 that connected to the mainland.

Barnum meant for Seaside Park to be his legacy for future generations, and the strollers, bathers, athletes, fishermen and picnickers who enjoy the park today owe a nod to his memory. In his autobiography he expressed the hope that:

“when the hand that now pens these lines is stilled forever, and thousands look... across the water to Long Island shore and over the groves and walks and drives of the beautiful grounds at their feet, it may be a source of gratification and pride to my posterity to hear the expressions of gratitude that possibly will be expressed to the memory of their ancestor who secured to all future generations the benefits and blessings of Sea-Side Park…”
