The Bhramapureeswarar shrine is housed in the lower level. The second level houses Periyanakar with Periyanayaki on a Thoni, hence the name Thoniappar. Sattainathar/Vatukanathar is also housed here. There are 22 water bodies associated with this shrine. Three different forms of Shiva are worshipped here, the Shivalingam (Bhrammapureeswarar), a colossal image of Uma Maheswarar (Toniappar) at the medium level, and Bhairavar (Sattanathar) at the upper level. The temple is associated with the legend of child Sambandar who is believed to have been fed by Parvathi on the banks of the temple tank. The child later went on to compose Tevaram, a Saiva canonic literature on Shiva and became one of the most revered Saiva poets in South India

Thaikkal and Thulasiyaendirapuram villages in Anaikkaran chathiram panchayat have mastered the art of making furniture from rattan, which enjoys world-wide patronage. Though rattan furniture is made in other areas too, the products handmade here are unique due to superior quality of raw materials used. The characteristics, techniques, production process, traditional knowledge, skills used, and quality of Thaikkal makes it unique and one of its own kind. They are cheaper, stronger and the furniture gives a cooling effect in summer and warmth in winter due to its efficient heat absorbing and releasing capacity.

An array of products are made. Apart from furniture, rattan mats, sital pati, baskets of various sizes and shapes, winnowing trays, sieves, japi or chatta, various types of fishing implements and murrahs are produced in large numbers in Thaikkal and nearby villages. Artisans claim that rattan furniture even hold medicinal properties.
The product is named after Thaikkal village because of a large of number of rattan-based industrial cluster found. Official statistics show there are about 500 registered rattan-based industries in Thaikkal and Thulasiyendrapuram villages and an equal number of unregistered industries in the area making a turnover of `two crore per year providing employment to about 5,000 workers.

Koppadi bridge video link:

Anaikarai is a village panchayat under Thiruvidaimarudur Taluk near kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, India. Anaikarai connects with two major bridges. Nearly 1 km long on both sides. It is an island in the basin of Cauvery river. It is located at the distance of 260 km from Chennai and 25 km from Kumbakonam.

The Lower Anaicut built by Sir Arthur Cotton in 19th century AD across Coleroon, the major distributary of Cauvery, is said to be a replicated structure of Kallanai. Nearly 2000 families live in Anaikarai with the main occupation of agriculture and fishing. It is well known and place for river fishes.

Anaikkarai is divided into two regions, since it falls into two different districts of Ariyalur and Thanjavur. The population of vadakarai(kandiankollai) is not included into the population of Anaikkarai. The population of Anaikkarai (area between two bridges and Thenkarai aka Vinayagar theru) is regarded as the population of Vinayagar theru in 2011 census. The present Sri Villiandavar koil was renovated in early 2000 during Ms. Jayalalitha's regime. This temple is located in the mid of Cauvery river and Cauvery flows in U direction surrounding the temple. The temple also houses many statues of elephants & horses.

The Great Temple of Gangaikondacholisvaram is located just 10 km from Anaikari.

Anaikkarai remains an important connecting point between Chennai and delta districts However the two bridges connecting Anaikarai with Kumbakonam is barred for heavy vehicles due to weakening after the heavy rains of 2009

The bridge has been repaired and opened to public for transport from 25 January 2012. Shortly after opening the bridge , both the bridges were again closed for heavy vehicles in 2013 and opened shortly in 2014 and closed again in 2017. Since then, only the light vehicles are allowed and cement barricades are built on both sides for pedestrians.

New four lane bridge is being constructed as that part of upgrading of NH-36 which doesn't passed through the village.

The Lower Anaicut or Anaikkarai is a dam and bridge built on the Kollidam (the northern tributary of Kaveri River) in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

It was built in 1902 by the colonial administration of the Madras Presidency for irrigating the erstwhile South Arcot district. Stones from the ruins of Gangaikonda Cholapuram were used to construct the dam. It is situated about 70 miles below the Upper Anaicut and 25 km from Kumbakonam.

There are two dams, north and south one. These dams were built on Kollidam river by British government in 1902 for irrigation. Vadavar river, which has separate dam starts from the North Dam and drains into Veeranam reservoir. Most of the year, the dam remains dry. The river teems with crocodiles.

The Nataraja Temple of Chidambaram 4K

In this video we arrive in a town called Chitambaram to viusit the Nataraja Temple. Chidambaram is a town in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The town is believed to be of significant antiquity and has been ruled, at different times, by the Pallavas until 9th century, Medieval Cholas, Later Cholas, Later Pandyas, Vijayanagar Empire, Marathas and the British. The town is known for the Thillai Nataraja Temple, and the annual chariot festival held in the months of December–January. Actually, tomorrow is the amazing chariot festival. Here are a few photos of the chariots.
The great temple chariots of South India are amazing structures for amazing events, architecturally and artistically. They are at the center of the grand festival or celebrated once a year in every temple. Each temple has its own tradition with respect to the calendar and also the number of days and the progression of the processions. But the chariot day is always the central feature and also the most spiritually and aesthetically inspiring. The chariot is quite mysterious. Structurally it is an upside-down pyramid on four wheels made of wood. On top of this pyramid is a small dais which is also a stepped pyramid, but right side up. For the occasion of the actual festival a temporary upper structure will be constructed of poles which will be covered by colorful cloth. Although every temple has its own specific details, generally these upper structures also have a pyramidal structure and shape. The ritual chariot is first and foremost a physical representation of Meru, and Meru is the Cosmic Mountain and World Axis. Pretty Cool! the spectacular Nataraja Temple, also referred to as the Chidambaram Nataraja temple or Thillai Nataraja temple. It is a Hindu temple dedicated to Nataraja – Shiva as the lord of dance . The temple has mythical roots and a Shiva shrine existed at the site when the town was known as Thillai. Chidambaram, the name of the city and the temple literally means atmosphere of wisdom or clothed in thought, the temple architecture symbolizes the connection between the arts and spirituality, creative activity and the divine. The temple wall carvings display all the 108 karanas from the Natya Shastra by Bharata Muni, and these postures form a foundation of Bharatanatyam, a classical Indian dance. Here are some photos of the front entrance. I just had to go up to the roof for some Temple selfies. The present temple was built in the 10th century when Chidambaram was the capital of the Chola dynasty, making it one of the oldest surviving active temple complexes in South India. After its 10th-century consecration by the Cholas who considered Nataraja as their family deity, the temple has been damaged, repaired, renovated and expanded through the 2nd millennium. Most of the temple's surviving plan, architecture and structure is from the late 12th and early 13th centuries, with later additions in similar style. While Shiva as Nataraja is the primary deity of the temple, it reverentially presents major themes from Shaktism, Vaishnavism, and other traditions of Hinduism.
Amazing to wander around the temple inside. Shoes off of course. The Nataraja temple has ancient roots, likely following the temple architecture tradition that is found all over South India from at least the 5th century. Textual evidence, such as those of the Sangam tradition, suggest a temple existed here along with Madurai in ancient times, but the town is not named Chidambaram in these pre-5th century texts. The earliest mention of dancing god of Chidambaram as Shiva is found in 6th and early 7th century texts. I feel the Spirit moving in my big feet. Amazing colorful paintings on the ceiling inside the Nataraja Temple, Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu, India. Hindu temple dedicated to Nataraja – Shiva as the lord of dance. Elephants always seem to find us. Lucky for us. Our elephant blessing at the Nataraja Temple. Sylvia and I received a blessing from an elephant at the Nataraja Temple.

The Chidambaram temple complex, for example, has the earliest known Amman or Devi temple in South India, a pre-13th century Surya shrine with chariot, shrines for Ganesha, Murugan and Vishnu, one of the earliest known Shiva Ganga sacred pool, large mandapas for the convenience of pilgrims (choultry, ambalam or sabhai) and other monuments.[12][13] Shiva himself is presented as the Nataraja performing the Ananda Tandava (Dance of Delight) in the golden hall of the shrine Pon Ambalam (பொன் அம்பலம்).[14]

The temple is one of the five elemental lingas in the Shaivism pilgrimage tradition, and considered the subtlest of all Shiva temples (Kovil) in Hinduism.[1] It is also a site for performance arts, including the annual Natyanjali dance festival on Maha Shivaratri.

Thillai Nataraja Temple in Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu

Thillai Natarajah Temple, Chidambaram or Chidambaram temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in the town of Chidambaram, East-Central Tamil Nadu, South India. The temple is known as the foremost of all temples (Kovil) to Saivites and has influenced worship, architecture, sculpture and performance art for over two millennium. The Sangam classics list chief architect Viduvelvidugu Perumthachchan as directing an early renovation of the shrine.

A major shrine of Lord Shiva worship since the classical period, there have been several renovations and offerings to Chidambaram by the Pallava, Chola, Pandya, Vijayanagara and Chera royals in the ancient and pre-medieval periods. The temple as it stands now is mainly of the 12th and 13th centuries, with later additions in similar style.[1] Its bronze statues and stone sculptures depicting various deities and the famous Thillai trees (Excoecaria agallocha) of the surrounding forest reflect the highpoints of early Chola and Pallava art while its famed gold plated gopuram towers are medieval structural additions by the royals Aditya I, Parantaka Chola I, Kopperunchinga I, Krishnadevaraya and Jatavarman Sundara Pandyan. King Kocengannan Chola was born following prayers his parents offered at the temple and later in his life he refined its structure.[2][3][4] The shrine gave the town its name.

Nataraja Temple, Chidambaram

Nataraja Temple, also referred to as the Chidambaram Nataraja temple or Thillai Nataraja temple, is a Hindu temple dedicated to Nataraja – Shiva as the lord of dance – in Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu, India.
The present temple was built in the 10th century when Chidambaram was the capital of the Chola dynasty, making it one of the oldest surviving active temple complexes in South India. After its 10th century consecration by the Cholas who considered Nataraja as their family deity, the temple has been damaged, repaired, renovated and expanded through the 2nd millennium. Most of the temple's surviving plan, architecture and structure is from the late 12th and early 13th centuries, with later additions in similar style.
The temple is one of the five elemental lingas in the Shaivism pilgrimage tradition, and considered the subtlest of all Shiva temples (Kovil) in Hinduism. It is also a site for performance arts, including the annual Natyanjali dance festival on Maha Shivaratri.
The Nataraja temple in Chidambaram is located in the southeastern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is about 5 km north of the Kollidam River (Kaveri), 15 km west from the coast of Bay of Bengal, and 220 km south of Chennai. The closest major airport is about 60 km north in Pondicherry. The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation and private companies operate services connecting it to major cities in the state. The site is linked to the Indian Railways with daily express trains to South Indian cities.
Chidambaram is a temple town, with the Nataraja complex spread over 40 acres within a nearly square courtyard in the center. Its side roads are aligned to the east-west, north-south axis. It has double walls around its periphery with gardens. It has had entrance gateways on all four sides.
Chidambara Ragasiyam/Rahasyam (Tamil for secret of Chidambaram) is a Hindu belief that there is a secret message conveyed through the embossed figure near the shrine of Shiva in Chidambaram temple.

Since ancient times, it is believed that this is the place where Lord Shiva and Parvathi are present, but are invisible to the naked eyes of normal people. In the Chidambaram temple of Lord Nataraja, Chidambara Ragasiyam is hidden by a curtain (Maya). Darshan of Chidambara Ragasiyam is possible only when priests open the curtain (or Maya) for special poojas. People who are privileged to have a darshan of Chidambara Ragasiyam can merely see golden vilva leaves (Aegle Marmelos) signifying the presence of Lord Shiva and Parvathi in front of them. It is also believed that devout saints can see the Gods in their physical form, but no such cases have been officially reported.

The phrase Chidambara Ragasiyam really means something different. The pharse literally means a secret associated to Chidambaram - the place. Behind this is a real meaning to a secret. As described above there is a particular kind of curtain which when removed enables us viewing the secret. The real significance of doing so is that, when the curtain which is maya is removed one can see his real self. And the seeing of oneself removing the curtain of maya is viewing the secret. According to legend, Chidambara Ragasiyam will never be revealed as it is the secret relating to a particular person who sees it removing the screen of maya. In the temple, when the poojas are performed and the screen is removed, one will be able to see the secret only when he applies this to his mind and soul.

The tank was originally called as Veeranarayanan Tank.

When king Paranthaga Cholan I ruled over Chola Kingdom during the 10th century i.e. 907 to 935 AD he wanted to improve the Irrigation facilities in and around Chidambaram. He formed a village called as ‘Veera Narayana Sathurvethi Mangalam. This Village was gifted to the Scholars who were well versed in the Four Vedhas. This Village is now called as Kattumannarkoil which is situated in the right flank of Veeranam Tank. He then formed the biggest tank and named it as ‘Veera Narayanan Eri’ ‘Veera Narayanan’ is the nickname given to king Paranthaga Cholan I for his Valour. In Memory of his Victory he formed the Village ‘ Gangai Konda Cholapuram’ during the year 1024 AD. In addition to that in order to improve the Irrigation facilities in and around the new Village, he formed a new tank and called it as ‘Chola ‘ Gangam’. He made a link between ‘Chola gangam’ and Veeranarayanan Eri so that the former surpluses into the later. The tank ‘Chola Gangam’ is now called as ‘ Ponneri Tank’ which is situated at the road connecting Jeyamkondam and Gangaikonda Cholapuram. These details were collected from Saraswathi Mahal Library at Tanjore.
