There's no place like home. That's for sure! Although I know reside in a nearby smaller town, Des Moines, Iowa is where I was born and raised. Des Moines is where I work. While Des Moines doesn't always pop up as a popular tourist destination, Iowa tourism and Des Moines tourism are on the rise, for sure! There are so many fun things to do in Des Moines and there are so many fun things to do in Iowa! So, here is what to know before visiting Des Moines Iowa!
The pronunciation of Des Moines has always been confusing for some--even those reading the news! Basically, the s's in Des Moines are silent. Once Des Moines pronunciation is figured out, you can start thinking about the exciting attractions and activiities in Des Moines. For example, the new, world-class, downtown Des Moines skatepark recently hosted the Des Moines, Iowa Dew Tour skateboard competition. Athletes and fans from around the nation flocked to Iowa for this incredible event! When the Des Moines skatepark isn't hosting world class athletes, it is open to the public. Even if you can't thrash on your skateboard or bike, you can come and watch others go crazy at this awesome Des Moines attraction. This is just one fun thing to do in Des Moines.
Not far away is Sec Taylor Stadium at Principal Park. Sec Taylor Stadium is home to the Iowa Cubs. The Iowa Cubs are the AAA affiliate for the Chicago Cubs. Around the corner from the home of the Iowa Cubs, on Saturdays, Des Moines hosts the downtown Des Moines Farmers Market. The Des Moines Farmers Market is consistently named amongst the top two or three farmers markets in the nation. Downtown Des Moines, Iowa is tough to beat.
And don't forget the Iowa vs. Iowa State rivalry football game in the Fall! and have fun letting the kids participate in Beggars Night! But before that, in mid-August, make it a point to visit the Iowa State Fair! The Iowa State Fair is listed as one of the 1,000 Places to See Before you Die in the best-selling book of the same title.

DES MOINES: I Explored the BEST and WORST Parts of the City - This Is What I Found
We visited Iowa's capital city Des Moines. The city, first settled by French explorers, lies on the Des Moines River at its juncture with the Raccoon River. Situated in the heart of the Corn Belt, it's Iowa’s most populous metropolitan area. While there, I explored the beautiful downtown and the incredible Papajohn Sculpture Park. I then took a drive through the city's most dangerous neighborhood, as well as one of it's safest. With the wife in tow, we toured the state capital building and enjoyed dinner at a cool zombie themed bar.
