The history of Anguillara Sabazia and its area is closely linked to that of the ancient populations who frequented this territory. In fact, the area possesses significant evidence, already starting from the Neolithic era.
The ancient historic center of Anguillara was born on the structures of ancient Roman houses, built on the promontory where the town currently extends.
A rich Roman patrician, Rutilia Polla, owned a villa on the shores of the lake, just below the Collegiata, and raised lake fish to supply the Rome market. The villa was shaped like a corner, and therefore called *Angularia* (corner house); hence the name *Anguillara* derives.
The territory, around the year 1000, must have been almost uninhabited, belonging to the Vatican.
The first archival documents that attest to its birth are dated to the 11th century.
The origin of the *Anguillara family*, which took place around 950 with Raimone, is shrouded in mystery. It is said in fact that around the 10th century. there was a dragon that populated the area of Malagrotta that terrified its inhabitants.
Raimone managed to defeat him by the lake, in the territory that would later re-enter the possessions of Anguillara and the pope, grateful for this service, gave him the territory.
In reality it is conceivable that the dragon-snake was simply a band of marauders who terrorized the local inhabitants, until the day it was defeated by warlike forces.
Having become a county (County of Anguillara) with the Orsini family in the 15th century, Angullara was incorporated in 1560 into the Duchy of Bracciano, also ruled by the Orsini, until they sold it to the Marquis Francesco Grillo in 1693.
The suffix *Sabazia*, deriving from the name of the area, serves to distinguish it from an homonymous center in the Padua area, Anguillara Veneta.

A DAY AT LAKE BRACCIANO, ITALY | Anguillara Sabazia
Anguillara Sabazia rests on the shore of Lake Bracciano, only 30 kilometers north of Rome but a placid world away. It is really a charming town, and in nice weather there is fresh-water swimming, canoeing, or fishing. In summer, ferries go to the other towns, so you can enjoy a glimpse of those, as well. There are restaurants and pizzerias with lake fish, Roman-style specialties, and more, plus gelaterias and lake front bars for a drink with a view.

Lake Bracciano Italy perfect day trip from Rome, Italy
Lake Bracciano Italy (Close to Rome) was relatively unknown to international tourism until Tom had and Katie Holmes got married at The Odescalchi Castle. But LAKE Bracciano in central Italy has a long history. Lake Bracciano in the Lazio region of Italy became the property of the Vico family, who transformed the pre-existing tower into a fortress and built new fortifications. The name of Braccio (arm) is probably linked to that of the city. The leader had built many small fortified structures in the territories he controlled. They were called Casa di Braccio.
In 1419 Pope Martin V ceded the fiefdom for three years in vicariate to a branch of the Orsini family, that of Tagliacozzo. Since then, the modest village of fishermen and farmers tied its destiny to one of the most powerful baronial families of the time, transforming itself into a thriving town.
The castle, an admirable work of military and civil architecture of the time, has become the most characteristic symbol of Bracciano. A legend tells that under the waters of the lake of volcanic origin there is a part of the submerged city; the emerged part would have been called Bracciano following the shap of an “arm”

Nel Lazio, sulle rive del lago di Bracciano, sorge un piccolo paesino davvero suggestivo, situato sui rilievi dei Monti Sabatini a pochi passi dalle acque azzurre. Si chiama Anguillara Sabazia, ed è una perla quasi sconosciuta ai più.
Il centro storico del paese è un agglomerato di splendide architetture in stile romanico, che risalgono alla sua fondazione nel periodo Repubblicano dell’antica Roma.
Una fetta importante del turismo di questo piccolo borgo è dovuta alla sua posizione strategica sulle rive del lago di Bracciano. Il paese sorge infatti all’interno del Parco naturale regionale di Bracciano-Martignano, che prende il nome dai due specchi d’acqua dolce distanti solo poche decine di chilometri l’uno dall’altro.
