The Azores' UNESCO World Heritage City (Walking the cobblestone streets of Angra do Heroismo) ????????
After I was released from quarantine, I quickly headed out to explore Terceira's top attraction: the UNESCO World Heritage City of Angra do Heroismo. The city, founded in 1478 (before Columbus' voyage!), boasts a myriad of historic colonial ruins, cream-coloured churches, mosaic cobblestone streets, and crumbling, charming alleyways.
From Angra, I headed to the Lajes International Airport to catch my afternoon flight to Ponta Delgada, the capital of the Azores (just a short 45 minute flight from Terceira).

· Jardim Público de Angra do Heroísmo –
Jardim Duque da Terceira is located in the historic center of the city and the municipality of Angra do Heroísmo on Terceira Island in the Azores.
Considered one of the most beautiful classical gardens of the archipelago, its construction began in 1882, according to drawing of the Belgian Francisco José Devander Gabriel under the civil governor Afonso de Castro. It was named after Antonio José de Sousa Manoel de Menezes Severim de Noronha, Duke of Terceira.

Monte Brasil is an extinct volcano that is next to the city of Angra do Heroísmo. At the moment it is a protected landscape and the natural park of the city, with arboreal and shrub species of special interest and with excellent view points.
Monte Brasil is located by the Castle of S. João Baptista, one of the most extensive and important fortresses, which was built in the late 16th century. The mountain is great for relaxing walks, there is also a pedestrian route signposted.

Terceira is one of the Azores’ Islands within the Atlantic Ocean situated around fifteen hundred kilometres from the Portuguese mainland with Angra Do Heroismo as its capital. In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries it was an important port of call for numerous trading ships and a junction for three continents. As in Europe, the foul air of mediaeval times once filled through the city’s narrow alleys but eventually a beautiful Renaissance city was created along with many fine churches. In the centre of the old town is the Jardim Duque Da Terceira, a well laid out garden with tangled pathways, fountains and an abundance of flowers. According to age old tradition almost each one of the island’s communes has its own Tourada Á Corda, a non-bloody bullfight during which the men await the bulls in the alleys and each bull has a rope tied around its neck to facilitate capture. Angra Do Heroimo, Anchor Of Heroism, created to serve the needs of those who travel the mighty ocean!

Angra do Heroísmo or simply Angra, is a city and municipality on Terceira Island, Portugal, and one of the three capital cities of the Azores. Founded in 1478, Angra was historically the most important city in the Azores, as seat of the Bishop of the Azores, government entities, and having previously served as the capital city of Portugal during the Liberal Wars. The population in 2021 was near 56,000 in an area of 239.00 km². It was classified as a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1983.

hiHi guys welcome to Travelzilla. Please join me on a walking tour of the incredible historic city of ANGRA DO HEROISMO, located on TERCEIRA ISLAND, THE AZORES ISLANDS, PORTUGAL. The Azores is one of the most iconic archipelagos of the Atlantic. It is comprised of 9 islands: PICO, SAO JORGE, TERCEIRA, SANTA MARIA, GRACIOSA, FLORES, SAO MIGUEL, CORVO and FAIAL islands. Some say the the 1oth island is located in Brazil, the island of FLORIANOPOLIS (LOLOL). Just kidding.
The Island of TERCEIRA is home to ANGRA DO HEROISMO, a city so important that is considered a WORLD HERITAGE SITE by UNESCO because it was the first major European city that resulted from the European voyages outside the continent during the renaissence era. ANGRA DO HEROISMO was the cpital of Portugal 2 times, it was a place of arrival for some of the most important navigators of their time as well as the birthplace of the liberal revolution of Portugal. Empreror PEDRO I of Brazil ( PEDRO IV of PORTUGAL) abdicated from his throne as emperor of Brazil. He left PEDRO II his 5 year old sone in his place and went back to Portugal to regain his crown as king of Portugal. It all started here in Angra do Heroismo. Pedro's saga to regain Portugal from his own brother, in what became known as the liberal revolution.
In this video I take you on a walking tour of Angra do heroismo. During this virtual tour we will walk all over the historical center. We will visit places like SÉ Street and Cathedral, Almeida Garrett Sq, several historic churches, the statue of navigator VASCO DA GAMA, the city archives, the Duque of Terceira Gardens so on and so forth. I will tell you a little bit of my own personal history and also about the history of the city and how they are linked!
I also talk about how ANGRA DO HEROISMO was a model city to Brazil. Most colonial cities in Brazil (then Portugal) were modeled after Angra, which is why it is a world heritage site. Amelia during her visit. The Azorean candy recipes have all sorts of spices because when the sailors came from India, they exchanged spices for fresh produce, curious, don’t you think?
