Driving through Mid-Hudson Bridge to Main Street, Poughkeepsie, New York, USA

Poughkeepsie (/pəˈkɪpsi/ pə-KIP-see), officially the City of Poughkeepsie, separate from the Town of Poughkeepsie, is a city in the state of New York, United States, which is the county seat of Dutchess County. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 32,736.[4] Poughkeepsie is in the Hudson Valley midway between New York City and Albany, and is part of the New York metropolitan area.[5][6] The name derives from a word in the Wappinger language, roughly U-puku-ipi-sing,[7] meaning the reed-covered lodge by the little-water place, referring to a spring or stream feeding into the Hudson River south of the present downtown area.[8]

Poughkeepsie is known as The Queen City of the Hudson. It was settled in the 17th century by the Dutch and became New York's second capital shortly after the American Revolution. It was chartered as a city in 1854. Major bridges in the city include the Walkway over the Hudson, a former railroad bridge (originally called the Poughkeepsie Bridge) which re-opened as a public walkway on October 3, 2009; and the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Bridge, a major thoroughfare built in 1930 that carries U.S. Route 44 (concurrent with State Route 55) over the Hudson. The city of Poughkeepsie lies in New York's 18th congressional district.

Mid-Hudson Bridge

The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Mid-Hudson Bridge is a toll suspension bridge which carries US 44 and NY 55 across the Hudson River between Poughkeepsie and Highland in the state of New York. Governor and local resident Franklin D. Roosevelt and his wife Eleanor attended the opening ceremony on August 25, 1930. The bridge was renamed the Franklin D. Roosevelt Mid-Hudson Bridge in 1994 though the span is rarely referred to by its official name.

The bridge is 3,000 feet (910 m) long with a clearance of 135 feet (41 m) above the Hudson. At opening, it was the sixth-longest suspension bridge in the world. The chief engineer was Polish immigrant Ralph Modjeski, who had previously engineered the strengthening of the nearby Poughkeepsie Railroad bridge. Primary contractor was the American Bridge Company of Ambridge, Pennsylvania with steel from Carnegie. The span is unusual in that stiffening trusses were intentionally constructed on top of, not below, the deck.

Buttermilk Falls and Ambridge movie set for A League of Their Own. - The Quarantine Files EP 7

On this mid-summer nothing else to do day we visited the Buttermilk Falls in Homewood, Pennsylvania outside of Beaver Falls and later strolled Merchant Street in Ambridge where World War 2 era movie sets were being constructed for an upcoming Amazon Prime TV series, A League of Their Own adapted from the original 1992 film. The transformation made in the span of a few short days was fascinating. The series is scheduled to premier sometime this year.

Pittsburgh Suburbs: History of Kilbuck Township

More info at

A Brief History of Kilbuck Township

Kilbuck Township is located in Allegheny County and is considered a suburb of the city of Pittsburgh. Kilbuck was named after Gelelemend, the chief of the Shannopin Indians who supported rebel Americans during the Revolutionary War. After the war, he converted to Christianity, hence why he was known more as John Killbuck or John Killbuck, Jr. As Pittsburgh’s surrounding areas grew in the 1850s, more townships were created and Kilbuck was one of them in 1869. Since the area had multiple natural resources and accessible water and a brand-new railroad, Kilbuck was attractive to early settlers. Residents loved the rustic, country atmosphere while still being close to the city. The population of Kilbuck was small as of the 2010 census, at just 697.
Facts about Kilbuck Township

Kilbuck has eight borders, including Glenfield, Aleppo, Ohio and Ross Townships and Ben Avon as well as Emsworth and Neville Township, among others. Kilbuck is served by the Avonworth School District. The population was spread out in the township, with the most people ages 45 to 64. Avonworth Park serves the city and includes a swimming pool with waterslide, diving board, playground, nature trails and more. According to the Census Bureau, Kilbuck has an area of 2.6 square miles. Over 60 percent of couples living in Kilbuck are married and living together.

Butler County Tourism | Zelienople, PA | #2!

How much more of Zelie do you need to see to come and visit? The best people, places, food, and more. Come see for yourself!

Located in Western Pennsylvania, Butler County offers a glimpse of small-town life, yet is close to major cities. We are only 25 miles from Pittsburgh, 325 miles from Philadelphia, and 380 miles from New York City.

Some of the earliest known history begins with first U.S. President George Washington, who passed through the area around the same time the French & Indian War began. Butler County has plenty of other interesting history, as well. It was founded in 1800 and named for Gen. Richard Butler, a colonial officer in the American Revolution.

Many of the towns hold rich German history; including Harmony, founded in 1804 by the Harmony Society of German Lutheran Separatists who were seeking religious freedom, and Saxonburg, which still maintains the architectural charm of a quaint German hamlet. Saxonburg was co-founded by John Roebling who also invented wire rope and designed the Brooklyn Bridge.

Present-day, the county has museums and many historic locations which interpret the area’s past. Special events and reenactments offer living history as well.

Crossing the Mid Hudson Bridge over the Hudson River in Poughkeepsie Hudson Valley New York USA

Franklin Delano Roosevelt Mid-Hudson Bridge walking foot path from Highland to Poughkeepsie New York State USA October 22nd 2021

The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Mid-Hudson Bridge is a toll suspension bridge which carries US 44 and NY 55 across the Hudson River between Poughkeepsie and Highland in the state of New York.

The span contains stiffening trusses intentionally constructed on top of the deck instead of below the deck.

The bridge carries three lanes of US 44 and NY 55 and a pedestrian/bicycle walkway over the Hudson. The bridge allows connections to US 9 on the east side, and US 9W to the west. The center lane is generally closed, except for rush hour traffic eastbound from 6am to 9am, and westbound from 3pm to 6pm. The center lane is also occasionally opened when work is being done on either side of the bridge. Five lane signals (referred to as gantries by NYSBA) indicate which lanes are open for travel. Approaches on either side of the bridge are four lanes, causing a bottleneck going onto the one- or two-lane span. The bridge has a computer-controlled LED decorative lighting system attached to the suspension cables, allowing the bridge to be decorated for Christmas (red, green) or the Fourth of July (red, white, and blue), and for other holidays.

As of May 2020, the current toll for passenger cars traveling eastbound on the Mid-Hudson Bridge was $1.75 in cash, $1.35 for E-ZPass users.

The land comprising Franny Reese State Park was once an estate known as Cedar Glen, built in the mid-19th century by painless dentistry pioneer Charles H. Roberts. After Roberts' death, the estate fell into disrepair as his heirs fought over ownership of the property.

The property was purchased in 2003 by Scenic Hudson, a not-for-profit environmental organization that aims to conserve land along the Hudson River between Albany and New York City. It opened as a state park in 2009, shortly after the land's ownership was transferred to the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, although Scenic Hudson continues to manage the property.

The park is named for environmentalist Frances Franny Reese (1917-2003), who worked to conserve lands in the Hudson River region.

Franny Reese State Park's main feature is its 2.5 miles (4.0 km) of hiking trails along old carriage roads that may also be used for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in the winter. The trails offer views of the Hudson River, the nearby Mid-Hudson Bridge, the Walkway over the Hudson, and the City of Poughkeepsie across the river.

Ruins of the 19th century mansion are also visible within the park.
