Best Time to Visit Madagascar

Read more about the best time to visit Madagascar in our travel guide:

In general May through to October offer great times to be in Madagascar.

In May the rainy season has just finished, so it’s lush and green, and pretty quiet. And great for surfing. Baby lemurs tend to be in abundance during June and July, as are whales off the coast at Ile Sainte Marie.

And the iconic ring-tailed lemurs are born in October – so visits to national parks in the south west at this time offer chances to see these cuties up close.

Madagascar

Madagascar has been isolated from the African land mass for over 165 million years and from that time on its flora and fauna evolved independently. The island has an international reputation as a wilderness tourism destination and an ecotourism destination that focuses on lemurs, birds and orchids. Over half of the breeding birds on the island are indigenous. Other indigenous species include red bellied lemur, aye and indri (the largest lemur species).

The Analamazoatra Reserve (sometimes called Périnet), four hours distant from the capital, is one of the greatest areas to see the indri.
The presence of the indri helped turn the Analamazoatra Reserve into one of the most important tourist attractions in Madagascar.

The country has historic sites, especially in the capital, such as the Royal palace or Rova in Antananarivo or the neighboring sacred hill Ambohimanga, both of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The main route from Antananrivo to Tulear, in the south, passes through a number of towns known for their artisan work: Ambatolampy, Antsirabé, Ambositra and Fianarantsoa.

Avenue of the Baobabs in Morondava, Madagascar

The Avenue of the Baobabs is a prominent group of Grandidier's baobabs lining the dirt road between Morondava and Belon'i Tsiribihina in the Menabe region of western Madagascar.

THE DIRT ROAD ON THE west coast of Madagascar linking Morondava and Belo Tsiribihina is framed by dozens of rare and ancient baobab trees creating a setting so beautiful and unique that it may become the country’s first official natural monument.

These giant, dry season-deciduous trees (members of the Mallow family), many of which are more than 800 years old with trunks that are over 150 feet around did not always stand alone. At one time the trees dotting the lane were part of a rich forest of the trees and other plants, but the encroachment of modern civilization and increasing populations in the area led to massive deforestation leaving the remaining baobabs to stand in relative isolation. There are also a handful of the ancient trees remaining in the outlying areas but both the trees along the road otherwise are under near-constant threat of destruction. When Arab seafarers first visited a bit over 1000 years ago, they said the devil ripped them out of the ground and put them back upside down, for their canopies resemble roots.

Thankfully, private organizations have taken notice of the site and are now promoting efforts to have the avenue protected, making it the country’s first nationally recognized natural monument, so that the trees might survive for another 800 years to come. Baobabs are incredibly useful plants, their trunks are harmlessly tapped for water during the dry season and have even been lived in, the young leaves (when reachable) are eaten as a salad vegetable when little else is available, and the nutritious sour brown pulp (tasting somewhat like tamarind) of the hard-shelled fruits is made into a pleasant summertime beverage all over Africa, and is also an ingredient in a Senegalese peanut and couscous dessert pudding called Ngalakh. These trees are popular in novelty gardens around the warmer parts of the Mediterranean and sometimes show up in southern California, they are hardy to plant hardiness zone 10a (minimum of 30 to 35 F) and will not survive more than 8 to 10 hours in the snow. Another peculiar fact is that baobabs blossom, but the blooming period is very short, only about 24 hours.

How Filming In Madagascar Led To Danger And An Unforgettable Story

In this piece I fly to Madagascar to make my first ever travel vlog. I wanted to see rows of beautiful ancient trees, wildlife including lemurs, gorgeous scenery and meet lovely locals... or at least that was the idea. A good friend of mine and I set out on a self guided adventure and things were going great until google maps sent us on a dangerous road called the RN35, that eventually destroyed our rental, forcing us to abandon it and continue on foot. We found ourselves hiking through the unknown, running and hiding from thieves and people with machine guns. Eventually finding shelter in a secluded town, we resorted to paying a militia to protect us and escort us to safety. We slept in the poorest areas, didn't have food for days and feared our lives more than once. All while our phones had no service and no where to charge them. At one point we were able to send an SOS to my father, contact friends/ other family members for help and even the Embassy got involved. In the end we lived to tell the story and even after I can say Madagascar is a beautiful country with good hearted people but we just had some serious bad luck. Hope you enjoy my video
