Amarante é uma cidade portuguesa pertencente ao Distrito do Porto, região Norte e sub-região do Tâmega, com cerca de 11 261 habitantes.
É sede de um município com 301,33 km²[3] de área e 56 264 habitantes (2011)[1], subdividido em 26 freguesias.[4] O município é limitado a norte pelo município de Celorico de Basto, a nordeste por Mondim de Basto, a leste por Vila Real e por Santa Marta de Penaguião, a sul por Baião, Marco de Canaveses e Penafiel, a oeste por Lousada e a noroeste por Felgueiras.
No contexto de políticas sub-regionais de desenvolvimento e de mobilidade, é membro da Comunidade Intermunicipal (CIM) do Tâmega e Sousa, constituída por 12 municípios, que no seu total contabilizam cerca de 528 000 habitantes.
O comércio e o serviços centram-se principalmente na cidade de Amarante em Vila Meã, que constituem os dois principais núcleos urbanos do concelho.
