Explore Bergamo through this hyperlapse and timelapse short film, a personal project to celebrate my home town in Italy.
40km northeast of Milan, is divided into an old walled core known as Citta' Alta (Upper Town) and the modern city below (Citta' Bassa, Lower Town).
The upper town in encircled by massive Venetian defensive systems that are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
It is also nicknamed The City of the Thousand, because of the large support it gave to The Expedition of the Thousand, a corps of volunteers led by Giuseppe Garibaldi and the main event in the Italian unification.

Bergamo is an Italian city northeast of Milan, in the Lombardy region. Its older upper district, called Città Alta, is characterized by cobblestone streets, encircled by Venetian walls and accessible by funicular. It's home to the Duomo di Bergamo, the city cathedral. Also here are the Romanesque Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore and the grand Cappella Colleoni, a chapel with 18th-century frescoes by Tiepolo.
Come explore it by walking across its historic districts, its churches, its funiculars and its walkways climbing up through the lush vegetation of the Hills Park and let yourself be enchanted by the surprising views of the flatland and the mountains.

From music to art masterpieces, such as Botticelli’s, Mantegna’s, Bellini’s and Raphael’s: you can find these masters here in the halls of Accademia Carrara Picture Gallery, housing one of Europe’s most outstanding collections of the Italian Renaissance.
You can discover the amazing works by Moroni, the XVI Century genius of portrait from Bergamo, whose pieces are exhibited in the world’s major museums, along with the masterpieces by Lorenzo Lotto, who gave Bergamo some precious works of art, altarpieces and wooden inlays with mysterious subjects.

BERGAMO - We Visit Citta Alta (And We Cut a Hole in Our Campervan!) ITALY
Another busy week as we make some final changes to our campervan Milli. Although we're looking forward to get back on the road again it feels like we just HAVE to squeeze some last sightseeing in! Our visit to the beautiful BERGAMO was well worth the effort - it really is a must visit when you find yourself in the north of Italy.
On the van-renovation front:
- We fitted a refillable gas bottle (LPG) - to avoid a repeat of what happened to us in Switzerland 3 years ago when we learned the HARD way how difficult it is to find LPG abroad.
- After some deliberation we added an water filter in-line with our main water tank. This will give us some peace of mind in drinking water from our storage tank.
- Dimmable LED lights in back as well as in the cab area.

Places to see in ( Bergamo - Italy ) Cappella Colleoni
The Cappella Colleoni is a church and mausoleum in Bergamo in northern Italy. Dedicated to the saints Bartholomew, Mark and John the Baptist, it was built between 1472 and 1476 as the personal shrine for the condottiere Bartolomeo Colleoni, a member of one of the most outstanding families of the city, and his beloved daughter Medea.
The site chosen was that of the sacristy of the nearby church of Santa Maria Maggiore, which was demolished by Colleoni's soldiers. The design was entrusted to Giovanni Antonio Amadeo, whose plan respected the style of the church, as can be seen from the octagonal tambour of the dome and in the lantern cusp, as well as in the use of polychrome marbles.
The façade is characterized by the use of tarsia and polychrome marble decorations in white, red and black lozenges. Over the main portal is a rose window, flanked by two medallions portraying Julius Caesar and Trajan. The upper part of the basement has nine plaques with reliefs of Biblical stories, and four bas-reliefs with Hercules's deeds. The four pilasters of the windows flanking the portal are surmounted by statues of the Virtues. The upper part of the façade has a loggia in Romanesque style.
The interior includes a square hall and a smaller room housing the high altar. The tomb of Bartolomeo Colleoni (who died on November 2, 1475) is on the wall facing the entrance. It is decorated with reliefs of Episodes from the Life of Christ, statues, heads of lions and an equestrian statue of the condottiere in gilded wood, finished by German masters from Nuremberg in 1501. The whole complex is surrounded by a triumphal arch.
Amadeo himself executed the funerary monument of Medea Colleoni (died March 6, 1470). Located on the left wall, it has a statue of the Deposition from the Cross in high relief. The tomb was transferred here in 1892 from Basella di Urgnano. The presbytery has a high altar sculpted by Bartolomeo Manni in 1676, housing statues of the three saints to whom the chapel is dedicated, John, Mark and Bartholomew, by Pietro Lombardo. The upswept cornice is supported by Solomonic columns. The altar table, to a design by Leopoldo Pollack, is supported by angels carved by Grazioso Rusca.
For centuries it was believed that the condottiere's remains had been buried elsewhere, as the sarcophagus appeared empty. On November 21, 1969, however, they were discovered in Colleoni's tomb in a wooden coffin, hidden under a plaster cover.

represents the core of the Upper Town: it has been the heart of political power for the ages and it is one of the most popular places for Bergamo. Restaurants and cafes, having a drink, breakfast or even a romantic dinner. You can admire the building called Palazzo della Ragione, the oldest municipal seat in Lombardy, as well as the Civic Tower, a bell tower also called Campanone.
In the middle of the square is located the Contarini Fountain, which was donated to the city by the chief magistrate Alvise Contarini in 1780, while on the opposite side of Piazza Vecchia you can see the Palazzo Nuovo (New Palace), which served as Bergamo's Town Hall until 1873 and is now the seat of the Angelo Mai Library. Its incredible collection includes ancient and precious books: incunabula, books from the 1500s, engravings, manuscripts and other inestimable artfacts making it one of the most outstanding libraries in Italy. The geometrical layout of the buildings around the square is so harmonic that when Le Corbusier visited Bergamo he said you can not move a single stone, it would be a crime
Piazza Vecchia is a lovely and unexpected opening amidst the alleys and narrow streets leading to it, as well as a perfect place to admire the beauty of Città Alta. The square was originally delimited by today's Piazza Duomo and then became the center of the medieval town, where the iron bars were fixed on the side of the Santa Maria Maggiore Church show. These bars are called measures (measures) and date back to the Middle Age, when the fragmented jurisdiction led to different measurement systems. Every city used to create its own units of measures for weights, volumes and lengths, so they were exhibited in public places (usually where the market took place).
The bars on Santa Maria Maggiore Piazza della Ragione, at the end of 1100, separating the present from the Duomo's square behind it. The private houses were demolished starting from the fourteenth century. Once the square reached the size, the most significant change took place during the end of Venice, when the beautiful Contarini fountain was built. It was put in the middle of the square both for aesthetic and practical reasons (you can still quench your thirst drinking from one of its sphinxes' mouths); in the late 19th Century it was replaced with a statue of Giuseppe Garibaldi, but was eventually put back to its original place in 1922.

Bergamo is a city in the alpine Lombardy region of northern Italy, approximately 40 km northeast of Milan, and approximately 30 km from Switzerland, the alpine lakes Como and Iseo, and 70 km from Garda and Maggiore. The Bergamo Alps begin immediately north of the city. With a population of approximately 122,000, Bergamo is the fourth-largest city in Lombardy.

Accademia Carrara is an art gallery and an academy of fine arts in Bergamo, Italy. The origins of the art gallery lie with the Count Giacomo Carrara, a wealthy collector and patron of the arts, who left a generous legacy to the city of Bergamo at the end of the 18th century. After the Count's death, in 1796, his properties were managed by a nominated commissary until 1958, when the Comune di Bergamo took over direct supervision. In 1810, a new building in the neoclassical style was constructed, the project being undertaken by the architect Simone Elia, a pupil of Leopoldo Pollack.
The museum has continued to augment its collections both with purchases and donations. As of 2006, it possesses 1,800 paintings dating from the 15th to the 19th century, and by artists including Pisanello, Botticelli, Bellini, Carpaccio, Mantegna, Raphael, Moroni, Baschenis, Fra Galgario, Tiepolo, Canaletto and Piccio. Besides paintings, there are drawings and prints, bronzes and sculptures, as well as collections of porcelain, furniture and medals.
In 1793, at the same time as the public opening of his gallery, the Count Giacomo Carrara desired that drawing and painting courses be initiated in the same place. The school, which was located in the same building as the art gallery until 1912, now has its own premises nearby. Since 1988, it has been an officially recognized Accademia di Belle Arti (Fine Arts Academy).
In 1991, the modern art gallery Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea (GAMEC) was opened on the opposite side of the road in a partially restored 14th-century monastery that had previously been used as a barracks. Presently, it has ten exhibition halls, on three floors. Since the purchase of the Gianfranco and Luigia Spajani collection in June 1999 the permanent collections have contained works by Italian and foreign artists of the 20th century including Boccioni, Balla, Morandi, Campigli, Casorati, Savinio, De Chirico, Kandinsky, Sutherland, and Manzù.

MILAN Like A Local? Almost. ????
A day in Milan is not complete without a visit to the Piazza del Duomo (Cathedral Square) although the goal of our trip to Milan from Alzano Lombardo was NOT to hit tourist spots. We took the tram to Bergamo and a train onwards to Milan Central Station from where strolled parts of the city we haven't seen before and enjoyed a simple 'workers lunch' far away from any tourists. After an 'obligatory' ???? gelato at the Duomo we made our way to one of the Milan Canals to enjoy a sundowner 'aperitivo'.

Bergamo is a little town about 45min by train from Milan train station -it has an upper city, accessible by bus (10min ride). The upper city is the Historic Centre with many notable monuments and buildings. The Appenine mountains can be seen in the backdrop .

Bergamo is a city in the alpine Lombardy region of northern Italy, approximately 40 km (25 mi) northeast of Milan, and approximately 30 km (19 mi) from Switzerland, the alpine lakes Como and Iseo, and 70 km (43 mi) from Garda and Maggiore. The Bergamo Alps (Alpi Orobie) begin immediately north of the city.
With a population of approximately 122,000, Bergamo is the fourth-largest city in Lombardy. Bergamo is the seat of the Province of Bergamo. The metropolitan area of Bergamo extends beyond the administrative city limits, spanning over a densely urbanized area with slightly fewer than 500,000 inhabitants. The Bergamo metropolitan area is part of the broader Milan metropolitan area, home to more than eight million people.
