Northern #Tuscany has so much to be discovered, especially for those travelling on foot. Starting in #Lucca, you can spend a day visiting its beautiful gardens and villas, or discovering some of the nearly one hundred churches that characterise this beautiful town.
The first part of this #walk takes you through the open and flat lands of the Val d'Elsa. You then enter the Tuscan Hills.

This section of the Via Francigena in Tuscany, from Lucca to Siena, is one of the most popular and spectacular stretches of the Via Francigena, the Camino to Rome. The trail starts in the walled city of Lucca with its amazing Renaissance wall and citadel, and finishes in the UNESCO World Heritage historic centre of Siena.

VIA FRANCIGENA - da Lucca a Altopascio - di Sergio Colombini
La tappa di oggi inizia da una delle città più belle d'Italia. Lucca è meta di tanti turisti e pellegrini che si fermano per una visita al Volto Santo.
Dopo un breve giro per la città si esce da Porta San Gervasio e poco dopo da Porta Elisa.
Dopo poche centinaia di metri si prende la via Romana per Capannori. Si prosegue seguendo la segnaletica della Via Francigena fino alla chiesa di San Michele di Antraccoli, di impianto romanico. Seguendo la cartellonistica si arriva in piazza a Capannori, alla chiesa romanica dei Santi Quirico e Giuditta.
Si gira a destra per Porcari e dopo alcuni chilometri di strada asfaltata si arriva alla chiesa che si trova in una bella posizione da dove si domina la valle. Qui sosta per il pranzo e poi per via Roma si esce dal paese, si prosegue su via Romana Est, in località Turchetto svoltiamo a destra per via Serchio fino ad attraversare la SP in prossimità del supermercato PAM. Si prende la strada adiacente al supermercato e dopo poche centinaia di metri sulla destra si prende l'unico tratto non asfaltato di questa tappa che in breve ci porta alla Badia di Pozzeveri, per fortuna ci sono dei lavori di pulizia e consolidamento delle mura. Si prosegue sulla destra della chiesa lungo via Catalani, fino ad incontrare via Francesca Romana dove si svolta verso destra per Altopascio.

Percorriamo la Via Francigena nel tratto da Lucca a Siena passando per le colline toscane e gli splendidi borghi. Altopascio, San Miniato, Gambassi Terme, San Gimignano, Monteriggioni testimoni di una storia millenaria.
