Altenburg, Germany is a town located in the state of Thuringia. Tourist can visit from nearby Leipzig, Chemnitz or even Zwickau and Gera. Altenburg is known for its traditional playing card history. The Altenburg Castle, which we will visit on this tour, dates back to the 12th century. The castle houses a Playing Card Museum as card games like Skat, which is very popular in Germany, originated in Altenburg.
On this walking tour we start on Skatbrunnen before we get to the market square. Later we see St. Bartholomew's Church, a Protestant church and many streets around to get a feel for this smaller German town. We explore the Altenburg center, get up to the Altenburg castle and eventually head back towards the train station at the end of our walking tour.

Altenburg is another beautiful city in Thuringia Germany with a population of 33,000 and is a short 40 kilometers south of Leipzig which makes for a great day trip. Their are many historical building's, church's and museums thru out the townsite, the most popular site is the Castle of Altenburg. The historic city center features Grunderzeit architecture and hosts a large outdoor market where locals gather during the day to eat and do their shopping for local foods and crafts. This is another city that I have enjoyed visiting so much during my trip to Germany.

Amazing Things to Do in Bamberg & Top Bamberg Attractions
Do you wonder what to do in Bamberg? See this video and discover with us the best things to do in Bamberg, Germany. Thanks to its medieval layout and well preserved historic buildings, Bamberg is one of the most beautiful towns in Germany. Bamberg is home to the 13th century Cathedral Church of St Peter and St George. Inside you can find the remains of its founder – Emperor Henry II. Also inside is the 13th century medieval sculpture of the Bamberg horseman, and is the most famous city landmark. The identities of the horseman and the sculptor remain a mystery. You cannot miss Bamberg’s old town and as you are walking through its historic streets, admire its Old Town Hall with frescoes that adorn the facade. According to the legend the citizens of Bamberg were not granted any land to build their town hall, so they decided to build it on an artificial island. Another tourist attraction is Little Venice - former fishermen's district with half-timbered buildings along the riverbank built during the Middle Ages. Take a river cruise and enjoy its pretty scenery. Another major landmark is 12th century Altenburg Castle located on the highest of Bamberg’s 7 hills. Its keep is 33 meters high and was completed in 13th century. You can visit the castle every day from 9 AM until 7 PM.

Altenburg ist durch das nach 1810 hier erfundene Kartenspiel Skat bekannt. Eine Ausstellung dazu befindet sich im Schloss- und Spielkartenmuseum.
Im Residenzschloss befindet sich das Spielkartenmuseum. Die Sammlung besteht aus einer Vielzahl unterschiedlicher Spielkarten aus aller Welt und verschiedenen Jahrhunderten.

Altenburg Castle is located on the highest of the seven hills of Bamberg in southern Germany, overlooking the city. It is in Upper Franconia, a region of the state of Bavaria, and dates from the year 1109.
Currently the castle is open for public visits. There is a restaurant in the castle called Restaurant Altenburg. The restaurant manages the so-called Salón de los Caballeros, n used for events such as weddings and other celebrations.

Bamberg: zum Michaelsberg und zur Altenburg in 4K
Wanderung ab Bamberg Mitte am 24.09.2021
Wir laufen auf dieser nicht sehr langen aber anstrengenden Wanderung vom Busbahnhof in Bamberg gen Michaelsberg. Das dort oben gelegene Kloster St. Michael kann man baw. nicht besichtigen - Sanierungsarbeiten. Erst geht es wieder hinab und dann umso anstrengender wieder aufwärts, denn die Altenburg thront weithin sichtbar hoch oben auf einem Hügel.
Ende September hatten wir für 2 Wochen eine wunderschöne Ferienwohnung gemietet
in Memmelsdorf bei Bamberg um dort abwechselnd zu radeln oder zu wandern.
