Top 10 SECRET Villages of Switzerland [Travel Guide]
Switzerland is full of wonderful villages but a majority of them remains widely unknown to the common tourist. While many may find their perfect village in the touristy hotspots, some might prefer rather calm and lonely villages. Sometimes you may find these villages just nearby the touristy centers but mostly it would require a lot of research. In this video, I present you the Top 10 secret villages of Switzerland, spots at where you may enjoy the serenity. Bürglen in the Canton of Uri is the hometown of William Tell, the national hero of Switzerland. The village of Bürglen is very small but worth a quick 30 minutes’ exploration. It’s best to be combined with the Schächental and the Klausenpasss. Morgins is a wonderful winter wonderland village in the lower part of the canton of Valais. It’s very quiet but beautiful with the many houses decorated with their Christmas lightings. It’s best to walk around during sunset and dusk. Morgins is furthermore part of the Portes du Soleil ski resort. Luchsingen is another secret village of Switzerland in the canton of Glarus. The environment at Luchsingen is very green and you may find many beautiful traditional houses. Luchsingen is perfect to combine with the Klausenpass and the Diesbach and Berglistüber waterfalls. Samnaun is in the very east of Switzerland. It's mainly known for the famous ski resort Silvretta Arena but many people do not know that Samnaun is one of the most beautiful villages during Winter in Switzerland. Roam around the many alleys and enjoy the houses with their colorful paintings. Schwarzenmatt in the green Simmental valley is a perfect hidden gem. It’s very quiet up there, just perfect to enjoy the green environment, the fresh air, seeing the many Swiss cows and wonderful traditional wooden houses. Münster in the canton of Valais is commonly passed by on the way to Zermatt. Definitely, it’s worth a quick stop as Münster is full of wonderful traditional houses. There are many alleys and corners to explore, thus another great secret Swiss village! Luthern in the canton of Luzern is also barely known among the tourists. The village charms with its beautiful church and green hill environment. The houses in Luthern furthermore remind one of the nearby Emmental. Definitely, Luthern is good to combine with Luzern and the Emmental. Carona lays in Italian-speaking Ticino and is another hidden gem village of Switzerland. The village is famous for its many artisans and just feels very calm overall. Do not forget to visit Carona’s botanical gardens. Evolène in the canton of Valais is the most beautiful village in the Val d’Hérens. It’s getting more known recently but still remains a secret tip. Do not forget to explore the rest of the valley, there are many wonderful gems to discover in there! The number 1 on this Top 10 secret villages of Switzerland list is Rivaz. Rivaz is a wonderful Swiss village embedded into the Lavaux, the Swiss vineyard terraces. Rivaz is much less visited than nearby Saint-Saphorin and Epesses. Among these three, Rivaz is the perfect sanctuary!

Altdorf, Switzerland - GoPro HERO 4
Altdorf (German for old village) is the capital of the Swiss canton of Uri. The municipality covers an area of 10.23 square kilometers (3.95 sq mi) and is located at a height of 462 meters (1,516 ft) above sea-level, to the right of the river Reuss.
Altdorf is 55 kilometers (34 mi) from Lucerne by the Gotthard railway and 28 kilometers (17 mi) from Göschenen. Its port on the Lake of Lucerne, Flüelen, is 2 miles (3.2 km) miles distant. There is a stately parish church, while above the little town is the oldestCapuchin convent in Switzerland (1581).
The municipality is located south of the Lake of Lucerne, and along the eastern side of the Reuss River. Additionally it is located on the major transportation line through theGotthard Pass and along the Gotthard rail line. Altdorf is best known as the place where, according to the legend, William Tell shot the apple from his son's head.

Altdorf sits on the Gotthard line and is the last railway station before the entrance into the new Gotthard Base Tunnel, the world's longest railway tunnel.
Located in the heart of Switzerland, close to Milano and Zurich, it has a great location for travellers and is definitely worth a visit.

Altdorf Switzerland 4K Tell Memorial Uri
Altdorf Tell Memorial is located in the centre of the small town, which is the capital of the canton of Uri in Switzerland. The canton of Uri belongs to the German-speaking part of Switzerland and is part of the greater region of Central Switzerland.
Wilhelm Tell is a legendary Swiss freedom fighter. His story is set in what is now central Switzerland and is dated to the year 1307. The poet Friedrich Schiller wrote the famous stage play about Tell in 1804.
Sights of Altdorf include the Tell memorial as well as magnificent manor houses and those of former mercenary leaders who returned home.

Thanks to its attractions, its attractive shopping offer, the beautiful lakeside setting and the nearby excursion mountains of the Rigi, Pilatus and Stanserhorn, the town is a destination for many travel groups and individuals on their journey through central Switzerland.
• Lake Lucerne/Vierwaldstättersee:
Encircled by popular excursion mountains, Lake Lucerne is the lake with the greatest scenic variety in the country. It is somewhat reminiscent of a fjord landscape, yet remains characterised by a mild lake climate. The German lake name, ‘Vierwaldstättersee’, has its origins in the four historic ‘Waldstätten’ (lit. forest sites), the three original cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden, and the canton of Lucerne, which, together, surround Lake Lucerne. The foundation for the Swiss Confederation was laid in 1291 with the oath taken on the Rütli, a meadow above Lake Lucerne. In the past, the lake was an important transit route, until 1863 in fact the only trade route to the Gotthard pass.

Hiking the Via Alpina | Altdorf - Surenenpass - Engelberg
Stormy weather, a quiet pass, and my highest ascent set the stage for one of the most breathtaking hikes along the Via Alpina!
This summer I start my great adventure across Switzerland: hiking the Via Alpina green trail. The seventh stage of the Via Alpina hike is a long stretch from Altdorf to Engelberg. My path takes me across Surenenpass from canton Uri to canton Obwalden.
As this year's Via Alpina Explorer, I will hike 260km across Switzerland from Sargans to Kandersteg, climbing 15 000m over 9 alpine passes. Over the next three months, I will hike every other weekend, building to an eight-day hike in August. It will be full of wild camping, Swiss culture, and physical challenges.

Canton of Uri
It is one of the 26 cantons of Switzerland and a founding member of the Swiss Confederation. It is located in Central Switzerland. The canton's territory covers the valley of the Reuss between the St. Gotthard Pass and Lake Lucerne. The official language of Uri is (the Swiss variety of Standard) German, but the main spoken dialect is the Alemannic Swiss German called Urner German [de]. Uri was once the only canton where the children in school had to learn Italian as their first foreign language, but in the school year of 2005/2006 this was changed to English, as in other Central and Northeastern Swiss cantons. The population is about 35,000 of which 3,046 (or 8.7%) are foreigners. The legendary William Tell is said to have hailed from Uri.
Canton of Grisons / Graubünden
The Grisons, Graubünden or Grigioni, more formally the Canton of the Grisons or the Canton of Graubünden, is one of the twenty-six cantons of Switzerland. It has eleven regions, and its capital is Chur. The German name of the canton, Graubünden, translates as the Grey Leagues, referring to the canton's origin in three local alliances, the Three Leagues. The other native names (Grischun in Rumantsch Grischun and Grigioni in Italian) also refer to the Grey League. The Alpine ibex is the canton's heraldic symbol.

It is a municipality in the canton of Uri in Switzerland. It is situated on the shore of Lake Lucerne.
The A2 (the Gotthard Motorway) is a motorway in Switzerland.
It forms Switzerland's main north–south axis from Basel to Chiasso, meandering with a slight drift toward the east. It lies on the Gotthard axis and crosses the Alps.
Wassen
It is a municipality in the canton of Uri in Switzerland. As of 2006, Wassen has an area of 97 km2 (37 sq mi). Of this area, 12.5% is used for agricultural purposes, while 18.2% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 1.1% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (68.1%) is non-productive (rivers, glaciers or mountains).
Göschenen
(German, Italian: Casinotta, Romansh: Caschanuttais) a village and municipality in the canton of Uri in Switzerland. It sits at the northern end of the Gotthard tunnel. The Göschenen riots (1875) saw Urner troops opening fire on Italian miners demonstrating for better working conditions and wages on the tunnel's construction site.
Teufelsbrücke
Schöllenen Gorge (German: Schöllenenschlucht; Schöllenen) is a gorge formed by the upper Reuss in the Swiss canton of Uri between the towns of Göschenen to the north and Andermatt to the south. It provides access to the St Gotthard Pass. Enclosed by sheer granite walls, its road and railway require several spectacular bridges and tunnels, of which the most famous is a stone bridge known as the Teufelsbrücke (Devil's Bridge).
Andermatt
It is a mountain village and municipality in the canton of Uri in Switzerland. At an altitude of 1437 meters above sea level, Andermatt is located at the center of the Saint-Gotthard Massif and the historical center cross of north-south and east-west traverses of Switzerland. It is some 28 km (17 mi) south of Altdorf, the capital of Uri.
Oberalp Pass
(Romansh: Alpsu or Cuolm d'Ursera, German: Oberalppass) (el. 2044 m.) is a high mountain pass in the Swiss Alps connecting the cantons of Graubünden and Uri between Disentis and Andermatt.

Lucerne (Luzern in German, Lozärn in Swiss-German) [25] is a beautiful small city in the heartland of Switzerland, across the lake from Altdorf, where legend has itc shot an apple off of his son's head. In addition to being a fine place to visit in and of itself Lucerne is a great base from which to explore famous Swiss sites such as Mount Rigi and the Rütli Meadow.
The Chapel Bridge, The Chapel Bridge, a landmark of Lucerne, is said to be the oldest woodbridge of Europe. The Bridge is made with wood and was built in 14th century as a protection for the city. It's amusing walking over it as you can see about 100 pictures of 12th century city life and Swiss history. Join one of the walking tours going around! Unfortunately the bridge burned down on 18th August 1993. Within a few months it was rebuilt. The tower used as oubliette is still in original condition.

The old city wall (Musegg Wall). There are several towers which you can ascend, including the clock tower - the clockwork mechanism is huge and exposed on the inside. The clock has 'First Strike rights' by law, and so chimes at 1 min before the hour. Unfortunately what little explanatory signage there is on the wall is almost all only in German.

The collection also houses 200 photographs -- previously housed in the Am-Rhyn-Haus -- by David Duncan Douglas, LIFE’s WWII photo correspondent who arrived with his camera uninvited at Picasso’s villa “California”, was welcomed by Picasso and his family, and over the years produced an intimate portrait of the artist’s day-to-day life. Picasso's living room was his studio, and domestic scenes -- a ballet lesson, Picasso drawing with his children, or wrapping himself in the cape and hat of his native Spain -- play out within the backdrop of some of his most famous works. Admission CHF 15 (CHF 8 for students, children 7-16 years).

The KKL (Kunst- und Kongresshaus Luzern [40], The KKL is a spectacular building that contains several concert halls and the Lucerne Art Museum. It was designed by Jean Nouvel. Its major concert hall (La salle blanche) is famous for its acoustics, and world class orchestras can be heard regularly. It hosts the lucerne music festival [41]
The Lion Monument (German: Löwendenkmal). or the Lion of Lucerne, is a sculpture in Lucerne, Switzerland, designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen. It commemorates the Swiss Guards who were massacred in 1792 during the French Revolution, when revolutionaries stormed the Tuileries Palace in Paris, France. HIDDEN GEM Village: BAUEN Uri SWITZERLAND
Bauen is what can be considered a true hidden gem among the Swiss villages. It lays by the shores of the Vierwaldstättersee (Lake Lucerne) and is often overlooked. Many people who visit central Switzerland do travel to Lucerne and the lake but often are unaware of the beautiful site of the canton of Uri. Bauen is not only a hidden gem but also considered being one of the most beautiful villages of Switzerland. Bauen is best to be visited by boat from Brunnen, hiking down from Seelisberg or otherwise by car. The arrival by boat is definitely going to be the most unique. As you are walking through the village of Bauen, you will notice the many palmtrees and Mediterranean vegetation. This is due to the unique climate present in Bauen; it’s usually quite warm during the year. With its Mediterranean vibes and the many palm trees, this village is very inviting to visitors. The village of Bauen has some beautiful traditional houses and an iconic church that are quite eyecatching. The church looks good from the village perspective but even more beautiful, if you are hiking up towards Seelisberg. Just after a couple of steps, you will be reaching 2 to 3 great lookout points at where you can overlook the village of Bauen and the prominent church. Furthermore, in Bauen there is the house of Alberych Zwyssig, the composer of the melody for the Swiss Psalm (national anthem). Should you arrive during warm Summer days, do not forget to go for a swim at the lake! However, make sure to swim during the early afternoon as otherwise the sun will be gone! This perfect hidden gem Swiss village is good to combine with a visit to Brunnen or Altdorf (UR).
