Albany NY - The Most UNDERRATED City in America

#albany #travelusa #newyork #unitedstates #america #amerika #walkingtour #walking #gopro10 #goprohero10
Albany is the capital of the U.S. state of New York, also the seat and largest city of Albany County.
The city is known for its architecture, commerce, culture, institutions of higher education, and rich history. It is the economic and cultural core of the Capital District of the State of New York.
Albany is one of the oldest surviving European settlements from the original thirteen colonies and the longest continuously chartered city in the United States. When New Netherland was captured by the English in 1664, the name was changed from Beverwijck to Albany in honor of the Duke of Albany (later James II of England and James VII of Scotland).

In 1754, representatives of seven British North American colonies met in the Stadt Huys, Albany's city hall, for the Albany Congress; Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania presented the Albany Plan of Union there, which was the first formal proposal to unite the colonies.
During and after the Revolutionary War, Albany County saw a great increase in real estate transactions. After Horatio Gates defeated John Burgoyne at Saratoga in 1777, the upper Hudson Valley was generally at peace as the war raged on elsewhere. Prosperity was soon seen all over Upstate New York.
On November 17, 1793, a large fire broke out, destroying 26 homes on Broadway, Maiden Lane, James Street, and State Street. The fire originated at a stable belonging to Leonard Gansevoort and was suspected to be arson set by enslaved people.
In 1797, the state capital of New York was moved permanently to Albany. From statehood to this date, the Legislature had frequently moved the state capital between Albany, Kingston, Hurley, Poughkeepsie, and the city of New York.
The Palace Theatre and The Egg are mid-sized forums for music, theater, and spoken-word performances; the Capital Repertory Theatre is smaller. The TU Center is the city's largest musical venue for nationally and internationally prominent bands.
In recent years, the city's government has invested resources to cultivate venues and neighborhoods that attract after-hours business. Madison Avenue, Pearl Street, Delaware Avenue and Lark Street are the most active entertainment areas in the city. Many restaurants, clubs, and bars have opened since the mid-1990s, revitalizing areas that had once been abandoned and reclaiming old row houses, businesses, and a pump station.
Alive at 5 is a free, weekly concert series held downtown during the summer on Thursdays; with 10 concerts in 2010, total attendance was roughly 100,000.
The Tulip Festival is set in Washington Park and celebrates the city's Dutch heritage.
With the large number of local colleges and universities around Albany, college sports are popular. The University at Albany's Great Danes play at the Division I level in all sports. The football team is a member of the Colonial Athletic Association while all other sports teams play as members of the America East Conference.
Authors Herman Melville and Henry James lived with their families in Albany when young, before their careers. James identified his character Isabel Archer, the heroine of his novel The Portrait of a Lady, as being from Albany
The Albany Institute of History and Art, on Washington Avenue near the Center Square Neighborhood and State Capitol, is dedicated to collecting, preserving, interpreting and promoting interest in the history, art, culture of Albany and the Upper Hudson Valley region. The museum's most notable permanent exhibits include an extensive collection of paintings by the Hudson River School and an exhibit on Ancient Egypt featuring the institute's Albany Mummies.

The Sad State of US Passenger Rail: A Top 10 List That May Make You Cry (Or Enrage You)

Intercity passenger rail service: whether it's high speed or not, nearly every other economically advanced nation on earth (not you, Canada) has it better than the United States. And while we're waiting decades for California High Speed Rail, the Texas Central, Brightline West, and other vapor-rail, we have perfectly good track all over the country that could be used to provide high frequency, reliable service if we only invested economic and political capital.

This video is a review of the ten intercity passenger rail corridors in the US with the most train frequency, and in general it is not a happy story. Rather, it's a bit of an indictment on how far behind the U.S. has fallen, and all of the economic and quality-of-life surplus we've chosen to leave on the table.

Bonus: plenty of footage and a few thoughts on the New Mexico Rail Runner Express between Albuquerque and Santa Fe, and how we managed to build a relatively frequent and reliable rail service in what's kind of an unlikely place.

Services discussed herein (Amtrak and other):

- The Empire Service (New York-Albany)
- CalTrain
- The Hartford Line (Hartford-New Haven)
- MetroLink
- Pacific Surfliner
- Keystone Service
- Lincoln Service
- Northeast Corridor, incl NE Regional, Acela, Palmetto, Silver Star, Silver Meteor, Carolinian, Cardinal, Crescent
- The Downeaster
- The Hiawatha
- Capitol Corridor (Oakland-Sacramento)
- Altamont Corridor Exptress (San Jose-Stockton)
- San Joaquins (Stockton-Bakersfield)
- Brightline and Tri Rail (Miami)
- Sonoma-Marin Rail Transit

Altamonte Mall - Altamonte Springs, Florida | Walkthrough

Let's take a walk through a beautiful shopping mall.

Altamonte Mall is a super-regional shopping mall located in Altamonte Springs, Florida, United States, a suburb of Orlando. Mall anchors are Dillard's, JCPenney, and Macy's with one vacant anchor once occupied by Sears, and other notable tenants are H&M, Forever 21, Apple Store, AMC Theatres, Pandora Jewelry, and Barnes & Noble. The center is the largest enclosed and conventional shopping mall in Seminole County and the third largest in total by square footage in Central Florida behind The Mall at Millenia and The Florida Mall.

Altamonte Mall opened on January 1, 1974, with Robinson's of Florida, Burdines, and Sears—the same anchors Orlando Fashion Square had when it opened a year before—but Altamonte also had a Jordan Marsh store during its opening.

The first anchor change happened when J.W. Robinson's sold its Florida stores to Maison Blanche, which in turn then became Gayfers in 1992 when MB was bought out by Mercantile, which in turn was acquired by Dillard's in 1998.

Another original anchor, Jordan Marsh, was husbanded in 1991 because of Allied Stores as JCPenney set up shop a year later with Mervyn's taking over seven other Florida stores from Allied as a part of an $80 million bid.

Burdines merged with Macy's in 2003, and simply became Macy's in 2005.

In 2015, Sears Holdings spun off 235 of its properties, including the Sears at Altamonte Mall, into Seritage Growth Properties.

On June 28, 2018, it was announced that Sears would be closing as part of a plan to close 10 stores nationwide, making it the last original anchor to close. The store closed on September 30, 2018, and will eventually be redeveloped by Seritage Growth Properties into retail and hotels.

Aldo, Finish Line, and MAC Cosmetics closed in 2022.

Historic National Road stop: Altamont, Illinois

As part of the Historic National Road series in Illinois, I now visit Altamont, which is the westernmost town in Effingham County. The town is home to Irwin Telescopic Seating Company, and has three parks. In this episode, I visit the National Road kiosk which is near Gilbert Park.

Altamont Pass Road - a GoPro Motorcycle Video

Here in another installment in my scenic or historic motorcycle roads series. This one features Altamont Pass - a mountain pass in the Diablo Range of Northern California between the towns of Livermore and Tracy. The name applies to two distinct but nearby crossings of the range. The lower of the two, carries the route of the original transcontinental railroad and Altamont Pass Road, part of the old Lincoln Highway and the original alignment of US 50 before the freeway came in. The newer route (Interstate 580) travels over the higher summit, at 1,009 ft. S Flynn Rd. also traverses the area, coming up from Livermore and connecting to I-580 at the summit. Nearby is the shuttered up Altamont Speedway where the infamous 1969 free rock concert occurred featuring the Rolling Stones.

Sights & Sounds of Indian Ladder Farms, Altamont, NY

This video features Indian Ladder Farms in Altamont, NY. Located outside of Albany, Indian Ladder Farms is home to its own cidery and brewery and offers a variety of activities for the whole family, including apple, berry and pumpkin picking, visiting an animal pasture and feeding baby goats, hiking the nature trails, browsing the farmers market and enjoying fresh pressed cider from the bakery. The property offers a variety of dining options, including sunny and shady picnic areas, the Yellow Rock Café in the farmers market, and the full-service restaurant and bar at the ILF Cidery and Brewery next door. We explored walked to the top of the natural trail and captured aerial drone footage of the beautiful vistas and the property below and enjoyed lunch with a tasting flight of their classic and artisan hard ciders. We hope you enjoy the rights and sounds of the farm residents and rustling of the trees atop the property captured during our visit to Indian Ladder Farms.

From Wikipedia:
Altamonte Springs is a suburban city in Seminole County, Florida, United States, which had a population of 41,496 at the 2010 census. The city is in the northern suburbs of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area, which the United States Census Bureau estimated had a population of 2,054,574 in 2008.

Dr. Washington Kilmer of Cincinnati was the first person of European background to settle into the area circa 1870, and he named the area Altamont (minus the e from the present spelling) after Altamont, New York, an area near his childhood home. In 1882, the Altamonte Land, Hotel and Navigation Company, founded by Thomas C. Simpson and four other Massachusetts businessmen, gave the area its present name: Altamonte Springs. The company developed the core community along Altamonte Avenue (today's SR 436) between Maitland and Longwood Avenues (today's Ronald Reagan Boulevard). On November 11, 1920, the residents of Altamonte Springs voted 38 to 7 in favor of incorporation.

Altamont

Please excuse the potato camera. This was shot on a whim using only my 3rd generation iPhone! The colors and lighting were spectacular though.

Formerly a leader in wind energy production, the Altamont is also host to a haunted speedway.

An interesting footnote: it started raining heavily on my drive home, so on the outro of the video I decided to sneak in the little musical hommage (as if it's playing on the radio). I'm lucky I didn't get a strike for copyright ;)
