TROMSØ, NORWAY | Awesome Things To Do In & Around Tromsø

Tromsø is located in northern Norway, above the Arctic Circle. With over 75,000 inhabitants, it’s the biggest city in northern Norway and is often referred to as the “Arctic’s capital”. It’s a year-round travel destination thanks to its young, vibrant city center and many cultural events.

???? WHERE WE STAYED in Tromsø (delicious breakfast included!):

Things to do in Tromsø:

7. Walk the harbor and city center
Tromsø’s city center is relatively compact and you can easily walk across it in around 30 minutes. The main pedestrian street (“storgata”) is packed with cafés, restaurants and shops. The harbourside has many cozy wooden houses and is the gateway to the fjords. You can also decide to go on a guided city walk to see the most iconic places.

☑️ Guided city tour of Tromsø:

6. Visit Tromsø’s churches
The Arctic Cathedral in Tromsø is a true icon of Northern Norway. Another church is located downtown, known as the Tromsø Cathedral.

5. Taste Beer From The North
The Mack Brewery was founded in 1877 and grew to be what is today one of the largest breweries in all of Norway. You can visit its beer shop (Kjeller 5), the pub where you can do beer tasting (Ølhallen), and the Mack microbrewery.

4. Day trip to Kvaløya & Sommarøy
The small fishing islands of Sommarøy are only an hour drive from Tromsø, while Kavaløya can be reached within 15 minutes. When driving through these islands, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the immense mountains, the crystal clear waters, and white sand beaches. There are tons of hiking trails and water activities to enjoy here! Our favorite hike in the Kavaløya area was Brosmetinden.

???? Find a rental car:

3. Visit the museums
Having such unique history and nature, the museums in Tromsø are more than your average galleries. We highly recommend visiting the Polar museum to learn about polar expeditions. Here, you’ll learn about famous polar explorers, such as Roald Amundsen. Another museum we really enjoyed was Polaria, an Arctic experience center where you can see the Northern Lights on screen as well as see bearded seals up close.

2. Day trip to the Lyngen Alps
Another great day trip is to the Lyngen Alps. You can reach the town of Lyngen within about a 2 hour drive from Tromsø. Home to about 140 glaciers, this mountain range is absolutely outstanding. It’s a true magnet for outdoor enthusiasts, with plenty of hiking, climbing, biking, and skiing opportunities.

1. Cable car or hike to Fjellstua
A visit to Tromsø isn’t complete without a beautiful view over the city. You can hike the sherpa steps or ride on the Fjellheisen cable car up to the mountain ledge. The views from the top are truly breathtaking, especially during sunset!

Tromsø winter activities
☑️ Aurora Borealis Tour:
☑️ Reindeer sledding & feeding with Sami culture:
☑️ Self-drive husky dog sledding adventure:

ALTA, Norway - Guide

The further you go north, the colder it gets, the more the skies rage, the sunsets are extreme, and the night skies can thrill. #Alta is known as the city of Midnight Sun and #NorthernLights and that is the reason many people go there. On winter nights you are most likely to see the electrical phenomenon, the aurora borealis dancing and violently zigzagging the sky with grace. The world’s first northern lights observatory was actually built here at the end of the 19th century. Arctic Adventure 1: Dogsledding and Northern Lights in Alta, Norway

We’re heading for a magical winter trip to the far north of Norway: Alta. That’s 70 degrees north – and much farther north than where I grew up in Norway in Lillestrom, outside of Oslo. Up north in Alta, we will be chasing the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis), riding with dogsleds and reindeer, driving snowmobiles, staying in an ice hotel and more. And in this first video of our day 1 in Alta, we are embarking on a dogsled experience and unique stay at the amazing Holmen Husky Lodge (@holmenhuskylodge1921) - and maybe we'll see the Northern lights?!

We have always wanted to try dogsledding. And, one of the most unique things you can witness in Alta is “Finnmarksløpet”, Europe’s longest dog sledding race, which is 1,200 KM long, and which is dubbed «the winter’s most beautiful adventure» by its participants. The race itself is not taking place during our visit, but we are dog sledging about 10km along the very trail that Finnmarksløpet follows each year. And, of course, we love dogs!

Overall, you should definitely visit Norway! @VisitNorway

Walking the streets of Alta, Norway

I walked around the world's northernmost town, Alta, Norway, on a sunny September morning. In this video, I visit the famous Northern Lights Cathedral (shaped like the northern lights themselves), stroll around the small downtown and public square area (the world's northernmost record store was closed, unfortunately), and then hike out to the edge of town to see Alta Church. There, I find a stunning cemetery, full of golden yellow leaves in the sparkling sunshine, big shady trees, endless rows of gravestones, and some intriguing inscriptions. I was lucky to see Alta at such a great time – what a sensational vibe this far-flung outpost in deepest Finnmark has!

Norway Winter Travel Guide - Alta & The North | Cruise Travel

Alta is a town on Norway’s northern coast, at the head of Alta Fjord. It’s known for views of the Northern Lights, which inspired the cascading architecture of the Northern Lights Cathedral, built in 2013. Thousands of prehistoric rock carvings are at nearby Hjemmeluft Bay, where there are viewing paths and the World Heritage Rock Art Centre. South of town, the Alta River runs through steep Alta Canyon.

Velkommen til Norge! | A Short Day in Alta, Norway

With our stopover in Iceland complete, we had a full day of travel on the itinerary in order to get to our next destination of Alta, Norway. The day was filled with hours sitting in airports, tons of snacks, and some terrifying flights.

This one is a quick video since we only spent a few hours walking around the small city, sat by the fireplace with coffees at the cozy Du Verden Matbar, and spent some time journaling about our experiences thus far. But the reason we traveled to the northern edge of Norway was not to see the city of Alta. It’s what’s coming next...

Where We Stayed:
Scandic Alta -

At the time of posting this, we are still in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. This video was recorded pre-pandemic and is not meant to encourage travel at this time, rather inspire an excitement to travel when the time comes. Please stay safe.

Drove to Alta, Norway – stunned by Arctic Ocean views and side trips on the way!

I drove my rental car from the village of Olderdalen to the notable town of Alta, Norway. I was surprised by the scenery on this drive: it's been superb on this trip so far, but the blue fjord waters of the far north of Norway were astonishing today in an altogether new way. Standing on the sloping hillside between the highway and the drop-off into the icy waters, you hardly even notice the fierce, biting wind freezing your bones. (But you do notice it!)

Not only that, but the rest of the way to Alta was spectacular as well. A supposed 40-minute side road turned into an unexpected, almost 3-hour excursion into a very beautiful and unknown section of Finnmark deep in the mountains.

Different than what's come before it, but another endlessly fascinating drive in the cold, beautiful north of Norway!

Northern Norway | TROMSØ, NORTH CAPE, ALTA | Three Week Roadtrip in Norway

Informative video on Northern Norway, Tromsø, North Cape and Alta. In the spring of 2020 it became clear that international travel this summer would be difficult, so I planned a roadtrip in Norway. Vegard took three weeks off of work, we invited friends to come join us for one week of the trip, and on July 3rd we began our adventure. We drove through all regions of Norway. I hadn't really traveled a lot in Norway before this - and wow - did we see some amazing nature! In this episode we visit Tromsø, Alta and Nordkapp - North Cape!
