Antigua Guatemala, qué hacer y cómo llegar a Guatemala

Acompáñanos a descubrir qué hacer y cómo llegar a Antigua Guatemala, la ciudad colonial más fotogénica de Guate. Continúa leyendo la descripción del video para obtener más información acerca de precios, lugares y actividades que mencionamos en el video.

-Cómo llegar a Antigua Guatemala

Si quieres conseguir vuelos baratos consulta nuestro blog:

Entrada: 40 quetzales turista extranjero

Hello Beautiful! Let’s take a field trip to Ciudad Vieja, Guatemala. Ciudad Vieja, formerly named Santiago de los Caballeros, was the first capital of the Kingdom of Guatemala. Come learn a little more about this city’s rich history with me. I also stumbled upon two beautiful alfombras on my way home. It was a lovely way to end my day. Guatemala is crossed by a large chain of volcanoes. Between Mexico in the north and the neighbors to the south (Honduras & Salvador), there are no less than 300 volcanic structures, of which 37 are recognized as volcanoes. Three of them are active today!

Their imposing silhouettes follow us for a throughout part of the journey, overlooking the high plains, Lake Atitlan and the colonial cities. They offer a rich playground for lovers of hiking, mountain biking and all kinds of sporting activities.

Guatemala is considered the best destination for observing volcanic eruptions. The fumaroles, lava flows, even explosions create special memories.

Is Volcán Agua The Most Dangerous Volcano? Fastpacking Guatemala-Episode 2

I love Guatemala and I love Volcanoes! This was my first fast-packing adventure, which means running or hiking as quickly as possible with everything on your back. Our team of 4 (Ali, Robin, me and our guide David) set out from Antigua and made our way through the beautiful Guatemalan countryside. The mission was to help Ali film a short VR180 film, I'll link to that here when it's done. In this episode, we go up Volcán Agua, and descend into a beautiful cloud forest, ending up in Alotenango for a little town fiesta.

???????? - We have wanted to volunteer since we have been traveling full time. When we arrived in Guatemala, we tried again. We messaged 5 or 6 and finally we found one organization here in Guatemala that had an event that we could serve at.

We met and served with Carlos Galindo, the founder and president of Pan De Vida. They work with more than 1,200 children and their families throughout the country offering food and health programs, scholarships and training.

If you enjoy this day of volunteering in then be sure to subscribe to see our upcoming videos from across Guatemala.

In our last video, we explored Tikal in the department of Petén. In today's video we serve near Antigua, in a city called Alotenango.

This is our first time volunteering abroad!

Cloth Masks for Sale in Guatemala made by women's cooperative in San Juan Alotenango

We are working with a group of women in Alotenango who we became involved with during the 2018 Fuego eruption. They are fabricating cloth masks with replaceable filters and we’ve researched to make sure these masks are actually effective at stopping droplets from penetrating the cloth.

You can purchase a mask for 35q that is reusable and washable and it will come with 10 filters. If you’d like additional filters you can buy those too! 5q for 10 filters :) If you purchase 2 or more masks the price drops to 30q a mask. For those who have to leave the house regularly for work, we recommend purchasing two masks and extra filtres.

We are not making any money off of this - just helping the women to get supplies and to manage sales and distribution of the masks. We want to reduce the time spent out and about so we will wait until we have enough orders to go to Antigua and surrounding areas to distribute. As of Monday, the use of masks when outside of your home will be mandatory until further notice so we’d like to help people get functional masks with the appropriate material and filters to stay safe by the weekend. Plus, this is also a great way to help a community that was already struggling prior to COVID-19 to earn some additional income.

If you are an NGO or community organizer looking to get masks for people without the resources to do so themselves please contact us about discounted or potentially free masks :)

Please text 3286 8504 via Whatsapp to order. We will need your name, the order, and the address for delivery. Thank you!

The most difficult volcano climb in Guatemala? See 8 volcanoes at the same time - for free! day 1

In this episode we are climbing the Atitlan volcano, which is the longest and the most difficult in Guatemala.

As if the length and difficulty of the climb wasn’t enough of a challenge, we were doing it during the rainy season… The day before it was raining cats and dogs. And the weather forecast wasn’t presenting any change in this respect.

But we were hoping for a bit of a miracle. And those miracles do happen - in the middle of the rainy season you can get days or even weeks when it doesn’t rain. I was definitely hoping for no rain, since I wasn’t going there well equipped. No waterproof trousers or shoes. and the only “rain jacket” I had, was a fake one and wasn’t really fulfilling its waterproof function.

You could ask why haven’t I waited? Well. As I already mentioned, that is a long and difficult hike and there are not many people crazy enough to climb it with me. And then finally, one day, I found 2 people crazy enough, with appropriate equipment (remember I don’t even have a sleeping bag), that would do it with me.

Abel and Joanes. Abel, 26, bboy Bomba from Nicaragua, who has traveled on his bike for the last 9 months, decided to make a break in paddling through Centralamerica (at that time - 6000 km under his belt) and do a bit of hiking.

Joanes, 33, originally from the Basque Country, has been living in Guatemala for the last 6 years on and off. Keen hiker, climbed most of the Guatemalan peaks.

At that time I also had some of the top Guatemalan hikes under my belt.

And all of us agreed, that comparing all the hikes and climbs we did, the hike up the Atitlan Lake was the most strenuous one. It’s just quite long, you go 2000m up and in the last 1 hour when you think you are almost there, there is still a decent amount of steep climb on lose small lava stones to face.

We started way too late (Around 11 am), because I arrived late (transport issues). They almost left me behind (I didn’t have a Guatemala sim card to inform them). That would have been absolutely terrible.

It started to rain at some point, but that was nothing in comparison to how it rained the day before and the day after!

At some point I started to get dizzy, I couldn’t see anything because of the fog and the fogged glasses. I was very cold, since I was wet and it was windy. The only thing that was pushing me forward was a promise of Joanes that at the top is warmer… (because of the steam getting out of the volcano, which is dormant), and the encouragement of Abel saying in polish: come on, come on…

Well, i wouldn’t have any choice anyway. They had the tents, and the way down to the last tent spot was way further that the way up. And Joanes promised some nice views up the top. So there was no giving up at that point!

We got to the top, had some difficulties in pitching the tent, as our fingers were half frozen and the wind was acting against us. Then just a quick dinner, with no water, so that there was no need for a bathroom in the middle of the night (the weather up the top was not really welcoming). Bad idea! My head started to hurt because of the dehydration or altitude sickness (or both) and I couldn’t sleep for most of the night.

But we made it! We survived the night!

A few tips here if you are planning to hike up the Atitlan Volcano.

1. Do not start late. The best time to start would be probably around 8 am.
2. Get decent and nutritious breakfast (you will be hiking 8 hours at least)
3. Bring enough food and water (for 2 days!). Make sure you have some fat and protein containing products (peanuts - or peanut butter, avocados, maybe cheese, beans, boiled eggs), bananas and apples. Bring at least 4-5 liters of water, especially if you are planning to make coffee (highly recommendable in the early morning,).
4. Study the map before you go - have an orientation where is what - where is Toliman, where is San Lucas town and Santiago town
5. Track you trek on a map placing gps points (just in case)
6. Ask the locals - whenever you meet any - if it is a correct way that you are on, which direction to go, etc
7. Bring enough warm and waterproof clothes and tent, which will withstand the strong wind up the top
8. Bring sunscreen - I didn’t and got really burnt the next day when coming down
9. Bring trash bags to bring back all your trash withy you (and - if possible, take some additional with you)
10. If you don’t think you are fit enough, don’t start with that hike. All of us were quite in form, and all of us ended up with quite a muscle soreness in the following days.
11. Enjoy the hike - it is one of the best hikes that I have done in Guatemala (if not in Central America). At the same time you see the volcanoes of: San Tomas (Pecul), Santa Maria (and the fumes of Santiaguito), Zunil, Tajumulco, San Pedro, Toliman, Acatenango, Fuego, as well as the deepest lake of Central America, and the coast of Guatemala. Can you imagine a better view?

Empower through travel!
