10 Best place to visit in Aljustrel Portugal

Aljustrel Alentejo, Portugal

Aljustrel is well known for its mines, industrial mining and geological heritage. Also known for its Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Castle.

In the territory of Aljustrel, it is documented the passage of groups of hunter-gatherers of the Palaeolithic. However, the earliest archaeological records of the beginning of settlement go back to the end of the 3rd millennium BC and are located on the hill of Nossa Senhora do Castelo, a community that was already dedicated to the extraction and metallurgy of copper. And it was this ore and the richness of its agricultural soils that made the occupation of the territory from there uninterrupted until now.

Sanctuary of Fatima and Aljustrel Private Tour

Discover the charms of Fatima and let yourself be drawn into the spirituality of this place of worship and history.

Did you know that the Sanctuary of Fatima is one of the most special places of worship in the world?
In 2019 alone, 6.3 million people passed through Fatima.
You can see the admiration felt for the Sanctuary.

It is not by chance that this is known as The Altar of the World.
Relax, take it easy – as soon as you get there, you'll understand why.
The Sanctuary of Fatima is in Cova da Iria, a place that, until 1917, was unknown even to the Portuguese themselves.
That year, one of the most important landmarks in modern religious history took place.
Three children, Jacinta, Lúcia and Francisco — who would become known as the three little shepherds — witnessed the apparition of Our Lady of the Rosary.
Later, in 1930, the phenomenon was recognised by the Bishop of Leiria.
Over the years, the stories of faith and the apparitions of Our Lady to the Little Shepherds have made Fatima a pilgrimage destination for people from all corners of the world.
From 13 May to 13 October, thousands of pilgrims arrive in this region, guided by faith and the desire to keep their promises, in a spiritual retreat along the Pilgrimage Route of Fatima.
This is not just another tour; it is a visit filled with tranquillity and knowledge.

A blessed tour is not done on an empty stomach
Undoubtedly this is the ideal tour for those who also want to taste the typical dishes of the region.

So, get ready to enjoy a meal prepared for you in one of Fatima's best-known restaurants.
Among the traditional dishes are the famous green soups, olive cabbages, cod roasted with chícharos, lamb stew with potatoes and rice morcelas. You’ll be crying out for more.
Food lovers cannot miss the typical desserts of the region: farófias, cream milk, almond pudding and chocolate mousse.
This visit will stay in your memory forever and ever.
And to make the experience even more complete, we've included some of the must-see places in the Prayer Grounds.
After lunch, we have set up a route from the Way of the Cross to Aljustrel, the village where the three Little Shepherds were born and lived, and which is 2km from Fatima.
In this short tour, we will walk the path that Jacinta, Lucia and Francisco travelled between their village and Cova da Iria.
You will be able to see up close the Loca do Anjo — one of the places where the three children would gather to pray — and Valinhos and The Hungarian Calvary, two other symbolic sites related to the history of the apparitions of Fatima.
Join us on this nearly 12-hour tour of one of the most beloved and invoked spiritual sites on the planet.
Prepare for a unique experience that you will remember forever!

The small village of Aljustrel was the birthplace of the three little shepherds and the house of the brothers Francisco and Jacinta can be visited, as well as Lúcia’s house, converted in a museum, depicting local lifestyle in the beginning of the 20th century.

Valinhos
Between the 8th and 9th station of the Way of the Cross in the Path of the little Shepherds, there is the place where the fourth apparition of Our Lady, on August 19, 1917, ocurred.

House Museum of Aljustrel
The House Museum of Aljustrel is located next to Lucia’s birth house, in that small village called Aljustrel, about 2 kilometers away from the Shrine of Fatima. This first permanent Museological Centre of the Shrine was inaugurated on August 19, 1992, and is located in the house once owned by Maria Rosa, baptism godmother of Lucia. It is divided in four sections which allow us to understand the daily life back to the period of time of the apparitions.

Jacinta and Francisco’s House
It was in this house that Blessed Francisco and Jacinta were born, the two youngest children of the family Marto. This house is 200 meters away from Lucia’s. It was acquired by the Shrine in November 1996, and later rebuilt.

Lucia’s House
House where Lucia de Jesus, the youngest of six children, was born and lived. The first interrogatories to the seers took place in this house. In the backyard, one can still see the fig trees under the shade of which the three little shepherds played and where they hid when sought by pilgrims or curious.

In 1981, Sister Lucia donated the house to the Shrine; it only took possession of it in 1986. The area surrounding the house was arranged and was built a new information office, inaugurated on August 13, 1994.

Loca do Cabeço
The Loca do Cabeço is the place where, according to the Fatima sources, the first and the third apparition of the Angel to the seers took place.

Visiting the Holy city of Fatima where miracles occur

The Holy City of Fatima is a key location for Catholic's throughout the world. We are not members of the Catholic Church but have tried to present this location with the respect it deserves for its place in the hearts of Christians from across the world. This video is an overview of the location and it's story we have not set out to deliver a theological opinion piece and whilst we always encourage comments we will not tolerate opinions in the our timeline that are disrespectful or intolerant to the religious freedoms of others or cause offence.

The Miraculous Story of Fatima, Portugal: Exploring the House of Lucia, Jacinta, & Francisco

The video you are going to watch might bring you into the atmosphere in which the little Shepherds lived.
Aljustrel is one of the places which composes the Parish of Fatima, and where the three Little Shepherds were born. Among the few houses that still remain from that period, even though restored, there are two which now belong to the Shrine and where the little Shepherds were born and raised. These houses deserve to be visited as they take part in the history of Fatima.
THE HOUSE OF THE SANTOS FAMILY:
It was built in 1885 and restored in 1987. Lúcia de Jesus, daughter of Maria Rosa and António dos Santos, was the youngest of six children. She was born in this house on March 22, 1907.
Lúcia died on February 13, 2005. She is buried next to Jacinta and Francisco, in the Basilica of the Rosary. At the age of 14 (after the death of her cousins Francisco and Jacinta), Lúcia was sent to Porto, to a convent school called Asilo de Vilar. In 1925, when she was 18, she chose the religious life and entered the Institute of S. Dorothea in Tuy and Pontevedra, Spain.
THE HOUSE OF THE MARTO FAMILY:
This house was built in 1888 and restored in 2000. Here Francisco and Jacinta, the children of Olímpia de Jesus and Manuel Marto, were born. They were the youngest of nine children.
Francisco was born on June 11, 1908. The spirit of love and reparation for the offenses against God was noticeable in his life.
He was a contemplative. He spent hours thinking about God.
He died in this house on April 4, 1919, at 11 years of age, victim of pneumonia.
Jacinta was born on March 5, 1910. She was full of the spirit of sacrifice. She offered everything as a sacrifice saying: Oh Jesus, it is for love of You and for the conversion of sinners, for the Holy Father, and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Before she went to the hospital in Ourém, Our Lady appeared to her in this house and asked if she wanted to convert more sinners with the sacrifice of her sickness. She died at the age of nearly 10 on February 20, 1920 in the Estefânia Hospital in Lisboa. On May 13, 2000, John Paul II came to Fatima to beatify Francisco and Jacinta.
THE APPARITIONS OF THE ANGEL (Loca do Cabeço):
In the spring and autumn of 1916, the Angel of Peace' appeared to the three little Shepherds. In the first apparition he taught them the prayer, My God, I believe, I adore, I hope and I love You.
I ask pardon for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope and do not love you.”
On the third apparition (the 2nd was at the 'Poço do Arneiro') the Angel held up a chalice and a host, prostrated himself in adoration of the Most Holy Trinity, and prayed with the three little Shepherds:
Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, I adore you profoundly, and offer you the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the Tabernacles of the world, in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges and indifference with which He is offended. And through the infinite merits of his Most Sacred Heart and of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg the conversion of poor sinners.
After that, He gave them communion saying,
Take and drink the body and blood of Jesus Christ, horribly outraged by ungrateful men. Make reparation for these crimes and console your God.
The second apparition took place at the back of Lúcia's family home in the summer of 1916. The Angel told them, I am the Guardian Angel of Portugal. Offer all that you do, to the Most High, as prayers and sacrifices.

Via Sacra - Hungarian Way of Cross in Aljustrel, Portugal

This video is intended as a tool for prayer- a virtual Way of the Cross- and meditation especially for the home-bound or anyone who wants to escape for a 5.5 minute pilgrimage to sacred grounds. Just pause the video according to your pace. I would have provided the prayers too, but I figured people had their prayer books or they are 'googleable.'

The lay-out of the photos, particularly the scenery, is sequential, just like the stations itself. The Way is as though you yourself were in Aljustrel, walking the path through the stations of the cross in the hill where the children: Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta- took their sheep to graze, where they prayed and played.

Background music from the soundtrack of The Passion of Christ, and make no claims , as I acknowledge copyrights. Borrowing it for it’s meditative quality.
