Exploring Batalha Monastery, Portugal ????????

The Monastery of Batalha (Portuguese: Mosteiro da Batalha), literally the Monastery of the Battle, is a Dominican convent in the municipality of Batalha, in the district of Leiria, in the Centro Region of Portugal. Originally, and officially known, as the Monastery of Saint Mary of the Victory (Portuguese: Mosteiro de Santa Maria da Vitória), it was erected in commemoration of the 1385 Battle of Aljubarrota, and would serve as the burial church of the 15th-Century Aviz dynasty of Portuguese royalty. It is one of the best and original examples of Late Gothic architecture in Portugal, intermingled with the Manueline style.

MONASTÈRE DE BATALHA - PORTUGAL

Monastère de Batalha - Portugal

Coordonnées GPS: 39.659158, -8.825540
Stationnement: 39.660465, -8.824549

Guimarães is one of the most important historical cities in Portugal, playing a crucial role in its formation as a country. It has been in existence for over a millennium, and its historic center has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 2001, which definitely makes it one of the largest tourist centers in the region. Its streets and monuments breathe history and enchant those who visit it.

-The Castle of Guimarães was built in the 10th century by the Countess Mumadona to defend the population from the attacks of the Muslims, and was built after the walls of Guimarães.

-The Palace of the Dukes of Bragança, built in the 15th century by D. Afonso, 1st Duke of Bragança, and which, due to its later abandonment, would be rebuilt in the 1930s.

-The Chapel of São Miguel do Castelo is a late-Romanesque chapel, built in the 13th century, where, according to legend, D. Afonso Henriques was baptized.

-Largo da Oliveira owes its name to a centuries-old olive tree planted in this location. Surrounded by picturesque typical northern houses, it is the ideal starting point for walking through the city's streets.
On the east side, a curious Gothic temple built in the reign of D. Afonso IV, commemorates the battle of Salado.
Behind, the Church of Nossa Senhora de Oliveira is the first Gothic monument erected in Minho. The bell tower, detached from the body of the church, has a Manueline style, which is therefore later. Inside the graceful cloister was the Alberto Sampaio Museum, with a remarkable collection of medieval and Renaissance silverware, including a sumptuous silver altarpiece from the 19th century. XIV, unique in Portugal, and a combat pellet that D. João I used in the battlefield of Aljubarrota.
On the north side of the Largo, the medieval building of the old Town Hall stands out, topped by a stone sculpture that, according to tradition, represents Guimarães. Below, a Gothic archway leads to Largo de São Tiago, one of the most characteristic public spaces in the city.

-The Museu de Alberto Sampaio was created in 1928 to house the artistic collection of the extinct Collegiate Church of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira and other churches and convents in Guimarães. It is located in the heart of the historic center of the city, which is a World Heritage Site, in the place where Countess Mumadona had it built, in the 19th century. X, a monastery.

History of Lisbon : From the beginning to christian siege in 1147

Lisbon is one of the oldest European cities.

Its history started in the Neolithic Period with the presence of Iberians and Celts, but historians estimate that the city was founded on 1200 BC by Phoenicians, probably by people from Tyr in the South of Liban.

The site is perfect to become a trading post, both at the mouth of the Tage, the longest river of the peninsula, on a natural port and on the road from the Mediterranea to the Atlantic.

Phoenicians would then travel for tin up to Cornwall to make bronze. They would exchange precious metals, manufactured goods, salt, salted fish, horses.

Around 400 BC, Carthage takes over. 200 years later, they are chased by Romans during the Second punitive war.

The city is fortified against Celts then are built a big roman theatre, thermal baths, temples dedicated to Jupiter, Diana, Cybele, a necropolis, a forum.

Lisbon used to export garum, a very popular salted fish sauce, wine, salt.

Vandals invaded the city in 408, then it is the Alans and the Wisigoths’ turn.

In 714, Lisbon became muslim for 433 years. The city fell under the Omeyyades from Damas’ domination, then the Berber Almoravids. A part of the residents converted to Islam, which saved them from paying taxes, without however opening them social opportunities. Christians and Jews had to pay tax.

The city recovered her splendor and in around 900 was one of the most populated cities in Europe with Constantinople, Salonique, Seville and Crodoue with a population of around 100 000 inhabitants.

The Moors improved farmland irrigation allowing several harvests per year.

They built a big mosque, a castle, a governor palace, a medina, the Alfama District, a fortress on the Tage’ south bank to protect the city and a new outer wall.

The Arab city is submitted to Viking and Christian attacks.

In 1147, the siege of the Portuguese and the “Holy warriors” take the city over. Massacre, raids and 30 000 people reduced to slavery.

The big mosque becomes a cathedral. The body of St-Vincent, the Patron Saint of the City, berthed on a small boat pulled by 2 crows.

The surviving Muslims are confined in the district of Mouraria under the hill of St Georges’ Castle, opposite the district of Alfama.

Lisbon turned another leaf in its history. She was Phoenician for 800 years, Carthiginian for 200, Roman for 600 years, German for 300 years and Muslim for 400 years before soon becoming the capital of Portugal.

Mosteiro da Batalha - Batalha Monastery, Portugal - Part 1

Last September we visited Portugal for a Mini-Moon after our wedding, a bit of relaxation on the beach and to visit my then 92 year old Father in the North or Portugal. So far you have seen the beautiful Boutique Hotel where we stayed South of Lisbon: Casa Morgados. Here is a beautiful monument we visited on our way to the North, in Batalha, Central Portugal. Sorry if my film skills are not the best and our stabilizer is ever worse, but it gives you an idea of this magnificent monument! On that day there was an amazing Medieval Market going on, filmed by the Portuguese TV and of course I was on TV a few times myself! Enjoy....

Here is a bit of the history: The monastery was built to thank the Virgin Mary for the Portuguese victory over the Castilians in the battle of Aljubarrota in 1385, fulfilling a promise of King John I of Portugal. It was originally a Dominican Monastery!

It took over a century to build, starting in 1386 and ending circa 1517, spanning the reign of seven kings. It took the efforts of fifteen architects, although for seven of them the title was merely honorary. The construction required an enormous effort, using extraordinary resources of men and material. New techniques and artistic styles, hitherto unknown in Portugal, were deployed.

Cloister hall of the monastery.
Work began in 1386 by the Portuguese architect Afonso Domingues, who continued until 1402. He drew up the plan, and many of the structures in the church and the cloister are his doing. His style was essentially Rayonnant Gothic; however, there are influences from the English Perpendicular Period. There are similarities with the façade of York Minster and with the nave and transept of Canterbury Cathedral.
