Is Kaunas worth visiting? - Kaunas, Lithuania 2022 ????????
On a 7 hour layover in Kaunas, Lithuania on my way to Bergen, Norway, I decided to take the bus into the city centre and have a look round. I had the following recommendations, so decided to vaguely follow it:
Transport: You can take the bus 29G to get from the airport to the city centre and back. I suggest to get off the bus at the stop Gedimino g. (here is the route).
The walk from Soboras to Kaunas castle is very nice (see map), you will find a lot of cafes and bars on the way. Sights on the way or nearby:
Laisvės avenue
Vienybes square
M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum (if you like art. Čiurlionis is one of the most famous Lithuanian painters, symbolist)

Historical Presidential Palace
Kaunas Parochial Archcathedral Basilica
Kaunas town hall
Valančiaus street – many boutiques and small art galleries
Santakos park
Church of St. George
Kaunas Castle (and museum)
When you reach the town hall, I suggest going to the Church of Vytautas the great and crossing the bridge. On the other side of the river, you will find Aleksotas Funicular, which will take you up the hill to the nice viewpoint.
You can take the bus back to the airport from this bus stop.

Kaunas is the second-largest city in Lithuania after Vilnius and the historical centre of Lithuanian economic, academic, and cultural life. Kaunas was the biggest city and the centre of a county in the Duchy of Trakai of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Trakai Palatinate since 1413. In the Russian Empire, it was the capital of the Kaunas Governorate from 1843 to 1915.
As defined by Eurostat, the population of Kaunas functional urban area, that stretches beyond the city limits, is estimated at 383,764 (as of 2017)

Fifth of a 9 episode series about my impressions from a visit to the Baltic countries Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in July 2018. In this episode there is a short description of the highlights of Kaunas (Kovna), Aleksotas Hill, the Neris and Neman Rivers, the Cathedral, the Town Hall, the New Town, the Ghetto and Fort 9. The episode ends with a typical wedding ceremony.

Medieval, picturesque, quaint, safe, and historic are just some of the words I would use to describe, Kaunas the 2022 European Capital of Culture 2022.
I spent some time here and what a great city to visit, I enjoyed the old town by night and day, visited the Kaunas Castle and strolled along the famous Laisves Aleja lined with cafes and restaurants.

Kaunas
Kaunas - 2nd by size city of Lithuania. It is a city in south-central Lithuania. At the confluence of the Neris and Nemunas rivers, Kaunas Castle is a medieval fortress housing historical exhibitions. To the east, the old town is home to the Kaunas Cathedral Basilica, with its ornate interior, and the Gothic spires of the Hanseatic House of Perkūnas. Laisvės Alėja, a pedestrianized street lined with amazing numerous trees and cafes, crosses the city from west to east.

Kaunas District Achitecture
The New Church Of The Sacred Heart Of Jesus In Pažėrai
The sight of those who travel from the temporary capital towards Kazlų Rūda is caught by a building of unusual forms. This is the new Pažėrai church designed by Stasys Kudokas, one of the most famous and productive architects from Kaunas of an interwar period.

St. George’s Church In Vilkija
The author of the current Vilkija St. George Church still remains unknown; however, it is still a quite typical example of a neo-Gothic sanctum of the turn of the 19th – 20th centuries. Built on a hill, it seems as its crowning the “amphitheatre” layout impression of Vilkija, which is settled on the slope. The old church, having burned down in 1892, was located at the centre of the town, in the lower terrace of the valley.

Zapyškis Old Church
There is no consensus neither on the date of the appearance of the Christian prayer house in Zapyškis, nor on the initiator of the event; however, it’s assumed that the church appeared in the second half of the 16th century. It is believed that it appeared by the will of the landowner of the regions of that time, Povilas Sapiega.

Holy Trinity Church In Čekiškė
A modest but expressive Church of the Holy Trinity stands in Čekiškė, the most remote town of Kaunas district. The first sanctum here was built in the early 17th century – when it burned down, the current building opened its doors in 1821. Though the architecture of the church is close to the principles of Classicism, it also has a clear neo-Baroque element – a wavy pediment of the front façade.

Baroque is usually associated with rich decor, expression and multi-colour. And yet, the style sometimes took the form of subtle hints. Panevėžiukas would be a little distinguished settlement of Kaunas region; however, the eye of the passer-by always catches a certain building: one of the most unique churches in Lithuania.
