map of Mauritania Africa

Mauritania ; Arabic: موريتانيا, Mūrītānyā, French: Mauritanie; Berber: Agawej or Cengit; Pulaar: ???????????????????????????????? Moritani; Wolof: Gànnaar; Soninke: Murutaane), officially the Islamic Republic of Mauritania (Arabic: الجمهورية الإسلامية الموريتانية), is a sovereign state in Northwest Africa. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Western Sahara to the north and northwest, Algeria to the northeast, Mali to the east and southeast, and Senegal to the southwest. Mauritania is the eleventh largest country in Africa, and 90 percent of its territory is situated in the Sahara. Most of its population of 4.4 million lives in the temperate south of the country, with roughly one third concentrated in the capital and largest city, Nouakchott, located on the Atlantic coast.

The country's name derives from the ancient Berber kingdom of Mauretania, located in present-day Morocco and Algeria. Berbers occupied what is now Mauritania beginning in the third century AD. Arabs conquered the area in the eighth century, bringing Islam, Arab culture, and the Arabic language. In the early 20th century, Mauritania was colonized by France as part of French West Africa. It achieved independence in 1960, but has since experienced recurrent coups and periods of military dictatorship. The most recent coup, in 2008, was led by General Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, who won subsequent presidential elections in 2009 and 2014. He was succeeded by Mohamed Ould Ghazouani following the 2019 elections, which were considered Mauritania's first peaceful transition of power since independence.

Mauritania is culturally and politically part of the Arab world: it is a member of the Arab League and Arabic is the sole official language. Reflecting its colonial heritage, French is widely spoken and serves as a lingua franca. The official religion is Islam, and almost all inhabitants are Sunni Muslims. Despite its prevailing Arab identity, Mauritanian society is multiethnic: the Bidhan, or so-called white moors, make up 30 percent of the population, while the Haratin, or so-called black moors, comprise 40 percent. Both groups reflect a fusion of Arab-Berber ethnicity, language, and culture. The remaining 30 percent of the population is made up of various sub-Saharan ethnic groups.

Despite an abundance of natural resources, including iron ore and petroleum, Mauritania remains poor; its economy is based primarily on agriculture, livestock, and fishing. Mauritania is known for its poor human rights record, most notably the continued practice of slavery, a result of a historical caste system between the Bidhan and Haratin. It was the last country in the world to abolish slavery, in 1981 and criminalized it only in 2007. Control is tightly concentrated in the executive branch of the central government, but a series of national and municipal elections since 1992 have produced limited decentralization. These regions are subdivided into 44 departments (moughataa). The regions and capital district (in alphabetical order) and their capitals are:

SEAFOOD HEAVEN in Essaouira, Morocco - MOROCCAN SQUID SARDINE TAGINE + STREET FOOD TOUR IN ESSAOUIRA

Seafood heaven in Essaouira, Morocco. There’s so much fresh seafood to be had in Essaouira, Morocco, and we experienced that seafood heaven in a massive street food tour in Essaouira, trying dishes such as calamari and sardine tagines.

???? SUBSCRIBE FOR MORE FOOD ADVENTURES:
???? WATCH Crazy Street Food Tour in Agadir, Morocco:

The first stop on our street food tour in Essaouira, Morocco, was to try a calamari tagine. Cooked in the traditional Moroccan way at a local shop inside the old city walls, we were warmly welcomed to cook and prepare the calamari tajine with the chef herself. We love calamari!

With such an abundance of seafood to try, we continued our Moroccan food tour to a local shop with a friendly owner who makes fried octopus. The tentacles on these were insane, so big they were the main course themselves. Essaouira has some of the best street food in Morocco, the city is a Moroccan seafood heaven and we couldn’t get enough.

No seafood street food tour is complete without lobster. We tasted the freshest lobster at Chez Zak, caught that morning, cooked over charcoal and served right on the street... we were in heaven! It doesn’t get much more street food than that! To finish off this street food tour in Essaouira, we tried the unique and flavourful sardine tajine. Sardines are a very popular Moroccan street food, especially along the coast. This special local dish is a popular food in Essaouira, and we had been waiting to try it. We were extra lucky to head down to the docks to choose the fish with the owners for the tagine, what a day!

We hope you enjoy the seafood heaven that is Essaouira, Morocco. We had such a great day trying some unique local flavours like calamari and sardine tagine. Stay tuned next week for more street food adventures in Morocco!

Someone Dug in the Desert And Found An Entire City (Voyage to Atlantis)

DON'T CLICK THIS:

The Sahara Desert is one the largest desert in the world, many considered it as a desert oasis. In geology, deserts are one of the most harsh environments on Earth. Often if you don't know what you are doing then you might get lost or worse, death. Crazy to be lost in the desert but it is more crazier if an entire ancient cities or civilization is lost in the desert. Here's another colossal mysteries recently discovered by archaeological discoveries.

Recent finds and desert discoveries indicated the continent of Northwest Africa in the western Sahara desert contains clues that the mysterious civilizations of Atlantis have been found there. Moreover, in the country of Mauritania lies a weird structure resembling the look and layout of Atlantis as described by Plato in his books. Is that truly is the lost legendary cities of Atlantis? Is it due to cause of rise in sea level and climate change cause the demise of Atlantis? Let’s find out on this video and more importantly to solve the question, is this proof of Atlantis or just an urban myth?

Landscapes of Mauritania

Landscapes of Mauritania

Mauritania has a generally flat landscape with vast plains that are punctuated by the occasional ridge or cliff-like outcropping.

Bisecting the plains in the center of the country are a series of sandstone plateaus giving way to spring-fed oases.

The most prominent feature of this region is the Guelb er Richat, also known as the Eye of the Saraha, which is a deeply eroded dome consisting of a variety of intrusive and extrusive igneous rocks.

Three-quarters of the Mauritania landscape is desert or semidesert, and as a result of severe drought the arid land has been expanding. There are no significant lakes or rivers.

The highest point of the country is Kediet Ijill at 3,001 ft (915 m); the lowest point of Mauritania is Te-n-Dghamcha at -16 ft (-5 m).

If you plan to travel to Mali coming from Mauritanis but you don't want the hassle of the borders of Senegal then you can go straight into Mali with as little as possible of Mauritania. Just count some extra days because you easily get lost and sleep in the villages...
