???????????????? ????????????????????????
???????????????????? ????????????????????????????
The first human settlement on the shores of Lake Albano is a pile-dwelling village found in 1984 with the recent phenomenon of the lowering of the water on the north shore of the lake.
Known as Villaggio delle Macine, due to some stone millstones found there, its dating ranges from the 20th-19th century BC, up to the Middle Bronze Age (17th-16th century BC).

The village could be traced back to the urban structure of the mythical Latin metropolis - in the etymological sense - of Alba Longa, razed to the ground by the Romans around the 6th century BC, according to tradition by Tullo Ostilio.

???????????????????? ????????????????????
In Roman times it was known as Albanus Lacus and lay not far from the ancient city of Alba Longa.
With a depth of about 170 m (560 ft), Lake Albano is the deepest in Lazio. The lake is 3.5 km (2.2 mi) long by 2.3 km (1.4 mi) wide, and was formed by the overlapping union of two volcanic craters, an origin indicated by the ridge in its center, which rises to a height of 70 m (230 ft).

Plutarch reports that in 406 BC the lake surged over the surrounding hills, despite there being no rain nor tributaries flowing into the lake to account for the rise in water level.
The ensuing flood destroyed fields and vineyards before eventually pouring into the sea.

It is thought to have been caused by volcanic gases, trapped in sediment at the bottom of the lake and gradually building up until suddenly releasing, causing the water to overflow.

???????????????????????????????? ????????????????????????
Around 395 BC, during the wars between Rome and Veii, a discharge tunnel was built.
It served as an emissary whenever the water level overflowed its mouth.
According to Titus Livius, this feat of engineering was incited by the Oracle of Delphi: the Roman victory against Veii would be possible only when the lake waters were channeled and used for irrigation.

???????????????? ???????????????????????????? ???????? ???????????????????? ????????????????
During the war with Veii in 393 BC the level of Lake Albano rose to an unusual height even in the absence of rain. This prodigy was believed to be relevant on the siege of Veii because a haruspex from Veii recited some lines of a prophecy that illustrated the relationship between the level of its waters and either the safety or the fall of the town to the Romans.

It foretold that as long as the waters of the lake remain high Veii would be impregnable to the Romans.
If the waters of the lake were scattered in an inland direction on the other hand Veii would fall; but if they were to overflow through the usual streams or channels toward the sea this fact would be unfavourable to the Romans as well.

This legend would show the scope of the powers hidden in waters and the religious importance of their control by man: Veientans too knowing the fact had been digging channels for a long time as recent archaeological finds confirm. There is a temporal coincidence between the conjuration of the prodigy and the works of derivation recommended by Palladius and Columella at the time of the canicula, when the waters are at their lowest.

Best Places in Lazio

Cradle of the occidental Christian culture, lakes and legends, thermal baths and history, ancient roads and green hills. This is Lazio, a region in central Italy, washed by the Tyrrhenian Sea, crossed by the Tiber River. The region consists mainly of hilly land that slopes gently towards the sea.
The region offers contrasting landscapes, which, however, complement each other well. Visitors can enjoy unforgettable views of the Italian capital, Rome. Lazio is also a thermal region. The healing effects of the many thermal springs were already known in the times of the Roman Republic.
Tivoli is such an ancient spa town, but its name is mainly associated with the rich art treasures. Tivoli acquired its fame mainly through the great villas such as Villa d'Este with its beautiful fountains and gardens and Hadrian's Villa, the former residence of Emperor Hadrian. For those who prefer the sea, the region offers real treats such as Gaeta, Sperlonga and the island of Ponza. For lake lovers, there is Lake Bracciano, a charming inland body of water surrounded by lush nature, on the shores of which stands the 16th century castle. All those who visit this land are left with memories of unique places and intense emotions, but also with a clear awareness of the inexorable passage of time and the efforts of all those who came before us to leave something for those who come after. #lazio #italy #bestplaces

Lake Albano, Alban Hills, Rome, Lazio, Italy, Europe

Lake Albano is a small volcanic crater lake in the Alban Hills of Lazio, at the foot of Monte Cavo, 20 km (12 mi) southeast of Rome. Castel Gandolfo, overlooking the lake, is the site of the Papal Palace of Castel Gandolfo. It is thought to have been caused by volcanic gases, trapped in sediment at the bottom of the lake and gradually building up until suddenly releasing, causing the water to overflow. Around 395 BC, during the wars between Rome and Veii, a discharge tunnel was built crossing the crater walls. It served as an emissary whenever the water level overflowed its mouth. According to Titus Livius, this feat of engineering was incited by the Oracle of Delphi: the Roman victory against Veii would be possible only when the lake waters were channeled and used for irrigation. The emissary is at 293 meters over the sea level. The tunnel (1200 m long, 1,20 m wide and 2 m high) ends at a spot called Le Mole, below Castel Gandolfo. It hosted the canoeing and rowing events of the 1960 Summer Olympic Games that were held in Rome. The lane marking system developed for these events is commonly referred to as the Albano buoy system.

**Some History**
Castel Gandolfo has several places of archaeological interest including the Emissario del Lago Albano and the remains of the Villa of Domitian. The area is included within the boundaries of the Parco Regionale dei Castelli Romani (Regional Park of Castelli Romani). There are also many points of artistic interest, such as the Collegiate Church of St. Thomas of Villanova, designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

The site of the modern town is a candidate for the site of legendary ancient *Alba Longa*, capital of the Latin League. It was later developed by emperor Domitian into his vast palace.

Its name is derived from a fortification of the ducal Gandolfi family (of Genoese origin, named after St. Gondolfus) in the 12th century, which passed to the Savelli family from whom the Apostolic Camera purchased it in 1596 for 150,000 scudi. Pope Clement VIII was the first pope to come to Castel Gandolfo, but the rebuilding of the old castle was the project of Urban VIII who first came in 1626.

Archaeological findings from the 16th century BC have been found in the area of what is now Castel Gandolfo.

Lake Albano, an Unexpected Beach Near Rome

Hot day in Rome? How about a day by the lake?

Lake Albano is a lake in the hills about 12 miles from Rome in the area called Castelli Romani.

It is about 170 m (560 ft) deep, and about 3.5 km (2.17 miles) long by 2.3 km (1.55 miles) wide. The lake is known for hosting the canoeing and rowing events of the 1960 Summer Olympic Games that were held in Rome.

Lake Albano is a volcanic crater lake, and arriving from Rome by car you first get to the rim of what used to be a volcano and then start your descend towards the lake.

There are several little towns around the lake area but the closest one, and probably the best known one is Castel Gandolfo, the home to The Papal Palace of Castel Gandolfo, the pope’s summer residence and vacation retreat. There is also a train going to Castel Gandolfo with a train going every 60 minutes. The journey from Rome lasts about 40 min.

There is plenty of parking around the lake but it usually fills up quickly and you can find yourself driving around the lake trying to find a spot where to leave the car. The parking will cost you 1.20 Eur per hour but if you pay 4.80 Eur you can leave your car parked all day.

Along the lake shore there is a series of “stabilimenti where you can get here everything you need for the day, sun beds, umbrellas and all sorts of drinks and snacks. The sand is black In character with the lake’s volcanic nature but the water is surprisingly clean. There are also grassy areas.

To leave the lake area the road takes you to a tunnel drilled through the rim of a former volcano. The final impression is that a Lake Albano is a handsome little place, definitely worth a day trip.
