*Some History*
According to Roman mythology, the god Saturn, once ousted by Jupiter and expelled from Olympus, would have come to the lands of Lazio and here he would have founded Alatri and other cities (called saturnian cities), giving rise to the golden age. According to another legend, the founders of Alatri are the ancient Cyclops, considered the only ones able to build its mighty walls.

Alatri was one of the centers of the Italic population of the Ernici. The foundation of Alatri dates back to the 16th century BC.
Around the middle of the 6th century BC, the four most important cities of the Ernici (Veroli, Anagni, Alatri and Ferentino) came together in a confederation (the Ernica League), in order to face the pressure of the Volsci and Sanniti. According to some sources, the League would have allied itself with the Rome of Tarquinio the Superb as early as 530 BC.

Subsequent attempts to expand Rome provoke conflicts with the Hernian League in 380 BC. and in 362 BC In the subsequent revolt of 306 BC Alatri remains faithful to the alliance with Rome and obtains to remain independent.

From this moment on, peace between Rome and Alatri lasts uninterrupted, favoring a beneficial cultural and economic development. The motto that is still in the coat of arms refers to the fidelity always shown: Vetustissima et Fidelissima Civitas Alatrensis.

With the Lex Iulia de civitate, in 90 BC the city receives a public order inspired by Roman institutions, obtaining full Roman citizenship and great benefits.

The presence of Christians in Alatri is not documented before 380, but it can be assumed that Christianity arrived already in the apostolic age, due to the conversion of the members of a Jewish settlement dating back to 63 BC. and which was repopulated in 49 after the expulsion of the Jews from Rome, by order of Claudius.

Middle Age
After the fall of Rome, the city of Alatri undergoes a slow process of decline, and the bishop becomes the only authority. The city suffered the barbarian invasions and the bloody war between Odoacer and Theodoric. But in 543 Alatri had to undergo the siege and sacking by Totila and was completely destroyed.
The following year (544) it was included in the Roman Duchy, formally subject to the Byzantine Empire, but in fact controlled by the Pope.

Best Places in Lazio

Cradle of the occidental Christian culture, lakes and legends, thermal baths and history, ancient roads and green hills. This is Lazio, a region in central Italy, washed by the Tyrrhenian Sea, crossed by the Tiber River. The region consists mainly of hilly land that slopes gently towards the sea.
The region offers contrasting landscapes, which, however, complement each other well. Visitors can enjoy unforgettable views of the Italian capital, Rome. Lazio is also a thermal region. The healing effects of the many thermal springs were already known in the times of the Roman Republic.
Tivoli is such an ancient spa town, but its name is mainly associated with the rich art treasures. Tivoli acquired its fame mainly through the great villas such as Villa d'Este with its beautiful fountains and gardens and Hadrian's Villa, the former residence of Emperor Hadrian. For those who prefer the sea, the region offers real treats such as Gaeta, Sperlonga and the island of Ponza. For lake lovers, there is Lake Bracciano, a charming inland body of water surrounded by lush nature, on the shores of which stands the 16th century castle. All those who visit this land are left with memories of unique places and intense emotions, but also with a clear awareness of the inexorable passage of time and the efforts of all those who came before us to leave something for those who come after. #lazio #italy #bestplaces

Rocca d'Arce, Hidden Gems in Italy, Day Trips From Rome

Exploring Rocca d'Arce. Earlier this year I filmed several videos in my places in Italy, but then between traveling and work I didn't have a chance to process them until now. I'm hoping to release them in internet gradually during these winter months. This is the first one, of a town called Rocca d'Arce (or Roccadarce) where I ended up unintentionally, getting lost on the way to another destination.

Lazio and Its Cities | Lazio Travel Guide | ItalianTourism.us

Lazio is not just Roma caput mundi (Rome capital of the world) and the Vatican City. On the plain towards the south is Latina, a fine example of rationalist architecture, while in the other direction is Viterbo with its Papal Palace. Travelling inland to Sabina, on the slopes of Mount Terminillo is Rieti! Then going on to Ciociaria, there is Frosinone, a surprisingly modern city despite its a medieval layout, near to which is the most symbolic place in Lazio: Montecassino Abbey.

Cyclopean walls are the most interesting and striking remains of ancient lost civilizations.

Sutri (Lazio), Italy【Walking Tour】4K

================================================================================

**Some History**
It is picturesquely situated on a narrow tuff hill, surrounded by ravines, a narrow neck on the west alone connecting it with the surrounding country.

The modern comune of Sutri has a few more than 5,000 inhabitants. Its ancient remains are a major draw for tourism: a Roman amphitheatre excavated in the tuff rock, an Etruscan necropolis with dozens of rock-cut tombs, a Mithraeum incorporated in the crypt of its church of the Madonna del Parto, a Romanesque Duomo.

The most striking edifice is the rock-hewn amphitheatre of the Roman period, one of the most suggestive monuments of the ancient Latium (Lazio). Of elliptical plan, it measures about 49 by 40 metres (161 by 131 ft).

The virtual walk starts just in the vicinity the town's centre and heads over to the main avenues and many narrow medieval streets, and continue along the main park and inside the amphiteatre.

*???????????????????????????? ???????? ???????????? ????????????????*
The name Collepardo derives from the presence in the territory of wild cats or lynxes, called *leopards*: this is the inspiration for the municipal emblem depicting a feline in the act of quenching his thirst with the water of a stream . But there are other theories regarding the origin of the toponym: one of these traces its origin in the hypothetical name of the first commander of the ancient colony of Goths settled in the area; according to another the name would come from the Latin *Collis arduis* (impervious hill); finally, a local scholar, Monsignor Giuseppe Capone, formulated a further hypothesis for which the name derives from *pardes* (park or garden): Collepardo would therefore mean hill garden.

*????????????????????????????*
Remains of ancient paths built by the people Ernici indicate that in ancient times the territory of Collepardo was chosen for its natural morphology.
The choice probably fell in this area due to the presence of the important river Cosa.
In the *Caves of Collepardo* there are testimonies of various human settlements and pagan finds of the mystery cult of Mithraism.

The main valley road was crossed in Roman times with the consular via Prenestina.
In ancient times, as later in the Middle Ages, the road was the protagonist on which the whole economy of that time was based, trade took place here and it was vital to defend it from banditry, equip it with hotels, taverns, post offices, towers and castles, market areas.

The foundation of today's town, however, probably dates back to the first half of the 6th century, with the allocation of a community of shepherds at the behest of Theodoric the Great, king of the Ostrogoths, in the area where the castle of Trisulti would later rise.

Collepardo was repeatedly subject to the expansionist initiatives of the city of Alatri; the Colonna ruled tjhe town from 1422.
In the 16th century the government of Collepardo passed in fact to a branch of the Tolomei of Siena.
