I travelled to Saudi Arabia // Part 1 - AlUla
Hey guys and welcome to my channel. In this video I take you along my candid first impressions of Saudi Arabia - a country that only opened to tourism in 2019. There's so many perceptions of this place, based on here-say, but only a minority of Western outsiders can really talk from a first hand experience. Everyone around me was so intrigued as to what I saw, so I thought I'll share in this video. I had an open mind, and as a traveller, the beauty and landscapes of this small part of Saudi was out of this world.
This is part 1, focusing on AlUla as a desert city, but stay tuned for part 2 where I show you the more cosmopolitan side to the country.

Al Ula is a city in north-western Saudi Arabia. It is famous for Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hegra! It is easily accessible by Prince Abdulmajeed bin Abdulaziz Airport. In 2017 the Royal Commission of Al Ula was formed. In just 5 years, Al Ula has completely changed. It is now a hot tourist destination, and for good reason! This place boasts some amazing attractions. If you are planning to visit Al Ula, This video is a must-see. The TOP places you MUST visit are showcased in this Guide to Al Ula.
1. Winter park - This is where you buy tickets for the different tours. The buses start from this place. It has restrooms and a Burger King.
2. Elephant Rock - This magnificent natural stone formation is shaped like an elephant by millions of years of wind and water erosion. It is a must-see! It is open for all visitors from 4pm to 2am, no booking is needed!
3. Al Ula Old Town - This ancient city is quite well preserved. Made from mud-brick and palm trees, this city is now filled with souvenir shops. The outside is open for visitors, but to walk in the ancient houses, you need to book a tour. This town is now empty but the last of its residents didn't leave until as recently as the 1980s.
4. Dedan & Jabal Ikmah – Some hiking is needed, but you are rewarded with some amazing petroglyphs, some ancient script as well as the famed Lion Tombs. The ancient city of Dedan was the capital of the Arabian Kingdom of Dedan, and later the capital of Lihyan as well. Booking is needed.
5. Hegra (Madain Saleh) – It was built 2000 years ago by the Nabateans. These tombs are like those in Petra, Jordan. This site also has a Railway station and a Wagon from the Ottoman period. Booking is required.
6. Al Ula Viewpoint – On top of a mountain, this viewpoint boasts stunning views of not only the city of Al Ula but the surrounding Sandstone Mountains. The best time to visit is at sunset when the landscape is awash with golden light. There are viewing lounges, restrooms as well as telescopes. It is open for visitors at all times, no bookings are needed!

In this video, we explore AlUla, an ancient city located in the northwestern region of Saudi Arabia. AlUla is home to stunning landscapes, rich history, and unique cultural experiences. Our first stop was Maraya, an architectural marvel, consisting of nearly 10,000 mirrors. This mirrored building is the largest of its kind in the world and reflects the stunning desert landscape, creating a breathtaking optical illusion. Next, we will take you to Elephant Rock, a natural wonder that resembles an elephant. This unique rock formation is a popular spot for visitors to take photos and enjoy the stunning views in one of the many sunken lounges. For those looking for an adventure, 4WD driving in AlUla's desert is a must-try. It was certainly a thrill for us driving over sand dunes while taking in the views of the stunning rock formations. After a short visit at the Harrat Viewpoint, our next stop was the Oasis Heritage Trail, where you will experience the traditional oasis lifestyle of the locals. This historic trail dates back over 2,000 years and features stunning palm groves and historic buildings. We also visited the old Mudbrick Village, a fascinating cultural experience that showcases the traditional architecture and way of life of the local people. No visit to AlUla is complete without exploring Hegra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Saudi Arabia's most significant archaeological treasures. You will see ancient tombs carved into the rocky terrain and learn about the Nabataean civilization that once inhabited the area. Finally, we visited the Old Town, which features beautifully preserved buildings and a walking street full of rustic shops, cafes and restaurants, set against a backdrop of the dramatic scenery. We can definitely recommend a visit to AlUla. It is a unique and unforgettable destination that should be on everyone’s bucket list. In this episode of our roadtrip in Saudi Arabia, we leave very early before dawn since we have to be in Al-Ula around 8:30 am. The journey between the oasis of Tayma and Al-Ula is about 237 km. The road is majestic with its lunar scenery which is not without reminding some science fiction movies. The journey will take us about 2h30.
Our arrival at the site of the Winter at Tantora festival was not the easiest.
After a 15-minute drive around Al-Ula, we located the festival site and present ourselves at the visitors' reception desk.
Despite the small number of people, there was a certain amount of disorganization. After 30 minutes, we finally get our passes. We are ready to visit the world's best preserved treasure, as long as we are among the first foreigners to set foot on this site.
Once again we have a busy day at Al-Ula with visits to the historical sites in the area, starting with Hegra, the main city in the south of the Nabataean kingdom, famous for its spectacular monumental tombs. It is also the first UNESCO World Heritage Site in Saudi Arabia.
Later in the day, we also visited the ancient city of Dadan and the Jabal Ikmah, a mountain where the surrounding populations came to offer their sacrifices to the gods.
Al-Ula is certainly the most impressive destination in Saudi Arabia. In fact, the Saudi authorities are relying heavily on the organization of the Winter at Tantora Festival to attract tourists from all over the world.
For those who wish to visit the site, you will need to contact the officials of the Tantora Winter Festival, which manages access to the main sites of interest in Al-Ula exclusively. Without them, it will be impossible for you to obtain access to the sites. It is best to call and book in advance. Another piece of advice, hotel rooms are scarce in Al-Ula and quite expensive. That's why we slept more than 200 km away from the city of Al Ula!

The scenery at Al Ula is captivating with strange-shaped stones along the highway. We visited “The Maraya” which is the world’s biggest mirror building standing in the middle of nature with sharp reflections. After a short lunch in the old town of Al Ula, we headed to Hegra; a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was the southern city of the Nabataean kingdom, famed for its spectacular monumental tombs.
We ended the day trip at the Elephant Rock before heading back to board the SAUDIA flight to Riyadh. On the way back, I experienced SAUDIA’s regional business class and gave my feedback on the seat and service.

1 . ALULA OLD TOWN.
One of the reasons it evokes such a deep sense of emotion is that it was actually inhabited in the not-so-distant past. AlUla Old Town is located in the narrowest part of the AlUla Valley. Built on a slight elevation, the town is overlooked by the Musa bin Nusayr Castle, a citadel dating back approximately to the 10th century.

5. HARRAT VIEWPOINT
AlUla is blessed with numerous lookout points that offer an elevated view of the epic landscape. Scale the black lava stone terrain of Harrat Uwayrid, and you’ll be rewarded with views over Dadan, AlUla Old Town, AlUla Fort and the AlUla Oasis. Stand at what feels like the edge of the world,

6. Maden Saleh - Hegra.
One of AlUla’s most famous settlements is Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, carved tombs are from around 2nd century BCE until 106 CE.

7. MARAYA GLASS BUILDING
Maraya is a stunning piece of art set in the desert canyon of Ashar Valley. Designed to blend into the surrounding landscape, it rises from the sand like a mirage. The state-of-the-art structure is covered in 9,740 mirrored panels reflecting AlUla's beauty, making it the largest mirrored building in the world, according to Guinness World Records.

8 - DADAN HERITAGE TRAIL
Amongst the most significant discoveries in all of AlUla is the city of Dadan, the capital of the Dadan and Lihyan kingdoms. The city, which was built meticulously from stone and astride the valley’s oasis, dates back between the late 9th and early 8th century BCE (Kingdom of Dadan) and 5th–2nd century BCE (Kingdom of Lihyan).

9. Al-Izam: A mosque marked with a bone in Al ULA
In the ninth year of the Hijrah calendar, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was on his way to one of his conquests. Finding himself 300 kilometers north of Madinah, he prayed after marking the Qibla using bones because he could not find rocks or stones. On that very spot, the area’s residents built a mosque to mark this important event and named it Masjid Al-Izam – Mosque of the Bones.
