Saudi Arabia, Al-Ahsa Oasis, an Evolving Cultural Landscape
The Nomination File of Al-Ahsa Oasis, An Evolving Cultural Landscape, was realized by a team composed of RCHeritage and IPOGEA, an Italian company specialized in desert environment, water management and oases. The support of oasis experts was instrumental in the definition of the nomination principles and in the identification of the property perimeters.
This nomination is the first example of cultural landscape proposed by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and a very large serial property comprising not only desert land and palm trees groves, but also urban neighbourhoods and agricultural lands.
The work was carried out in coordination with the STCH (in Riyadh and in al-Ahsa) and the Municipality of Al-Ahsa. A series of presentation meetings took place in Al-Hofuf to involve the local community and the ensemble of the institutional stakeholders. Two management seminars were also organized before and after the submission of the file to UNESCO in January 2017.
Located in the Eastern Province of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Al-Ahsa Oasis, an Evolving Cultural Landscape is a serial cultural property constituted of twelve components covering an area of 85 km2, surrounded by 7 buffer zones extending over 215 Km2.
It is an organically evolved landscape that developed by association with, and in response to, its natural environment, and an example of continuing landscape retaining an active social role in Al-Ahsa contemporary society. The nominated property shows the sustainable evolution of the oasis and of its associated human settlements, where the physical and functional relations between the natural landscape, the water springs, the water canalization system, the villages, and the cities create a continuously evolving human-created oasis environment. The association of large watered date palm groves and urban areas creates an exceptional cultural landscape presenting, through its continuous practice, a unique evolution of an ancient cultural tradition bearing testimony to the sedentary human occupation of the area throughout the millennia and to its evolving sustainability until the present day.
Al-Ahsa Oasis is the largest oasis in the world with more than 2.5 million palm trees, and it preserves material traces representative of all the stages of the oasis history, since its origins in the Neolithic to the present. The unique role the oasis of Al-Ahsa played for hundreds of years — and continues to play in the modern kingdom of Saudi Arabia — is witnessed by the many fortresses, historic mosques, springs and canals that dot the modern city and the orchards. Al-Ahsa Oasis, an Evolving Cultural Landscape, remains today the largest agricultural area in the Arabian Peninsula, and a working and living environment that has developed in direct continuity with its origins and its past.

Authorities in Al-Ahsa started to establish the first cable car and hanging bridges on Jabal Al-Shobah in 2014. After completion, the cable car service was supposed to travel 1,500 meters from the base of the mountain to the summit. The project consisted of three control stations and also included the construction of two lakes and two waterfalls 550 meters high in addition to hanging bridges, climbing nets, children's playground, shaded areas and sky rope at the top of the mountains. Unfortunately, the authorities did not pay needed attention to the project after completion and all the services got stopped except the accessibility to Hanging Bridges. There are 3 bridges at the top of the mountain, each 1+ km, which connect different mountains and offer breathtaking views of Al Hasa Oasis.

Many varieties of dates are grown on the more than three million trees in the oasis. The city has an ancient tradition of handicrafts, considered as both cultural and social practices passed on from one generation to the next. Around fifty expressions of crafts and folk art have remained throughout the city’s history and bear witness to Al-Ahsa’s scenic wealth, including textiles from palm trees, pottery, weaving and joinery.

Oasis Jawatha Park, Hofuf - Al Ahsa Saudi Arabia| Vlog | Eastern Province, KSA
Jawatha Park is located about 12 km northwest of Hofuf, in the village of Al-Kilabiyah, Saudi Arabia, and is one of the most interesting places to visit in Al Hofuf. In the middle of the park is a lake which is surrounded by walkways, palm gardens, green grass, and restaurants. On the right side of the main entrance, visitors will find the historic Jawtha mosque which is one of the oldest mosques in Saudi Arabia and a small museum that showcases the history of the kingdom.
Activities
It is a great amusement park that you can visit with friends and family as it is a child-friendly zone with proper security. You can partake in many fun activities including boat riding and bird watching at the lake. However, the boat ride is very short because the lake itself is not that big. The lake also attracts all kinds of exotic and local birds that make it an ideal place for bird watching and photography. There are also many coffee shops, food stalls, and cafes where you will find everything from light snacks and ice cream to full meals and soft drinks.
Seating arrangements can be found next to the walkways, along with a good toilet facility. Other than that, the park has a flower garden and a small zoo, where you will see different animals including camels and rabbits. On weekends, the park can get quite crowded as families flock towards the park for picnics and playdates for the kids.

After one night in Riyadh, we took a road trip with our friend Moh to the beautiful oasis city of Al Hofuf.
We met our new host Mohammed, and he & his friend Khaled took us to try some of the delicious traditional food from Al Ahsa.
First was a visit to a wonderful traditional bakery where we tried delicious Red date bread and saw the tanoor oven in action!
We learnt about DIBS and tried amazing red date bread with cheese, laban and dibs!
Then we went to an awesome restaurant and had an incredible time feasting on famous Saudi dishes like:

Exporing Al AHSA big attraction for tourists
TAKING THE TRAIN TO HOFUF: Our experience on Saudi Railway from Dammam to Al Hofuf, Saudi Arabia.
Today we took our first train in Saudi Arabia from Dammam to Al Hofuf (the journey goes onwards to Riyadh); a short journey of less than two hours train travel. And we can confirm the train ride was smooth as!
Rail transport is not a particularly popular mode of travel in KSA yet (cars are definitely the big way to get around) but from a travel perspective it felt like a fairly economical way to travel across the country (which is huge in land-size and the 13th largest country in the world!).
We look forward to sharing more of our family travel adventures in Saudi Arabia!

In part 4 of our road trip we stop by the caves near Al Hofuf. This was so lovely, it was well set up for tourists.
On weekends its open from 8am-10pm, but hours are shorter during the weekdays.

Road Trip, from Al Hasa to Uqair Beach, Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia
This was during our 2 days visit to eastern province particularly in Al Hasa ( Hufof), Saudi Arabia. The travel time from Central Hofuf to Uqair Beach is around 1 hour and 10 minutes but always consider the minor sand storms you will encounter while traveling and crossing the sand dunes along the high ways.
Eastern Province has many things to offer including the pristine Uqair beach ⛱. Within the seaside, some areas are restricted and not allowed to swim. There is designated areas where people can enjoy swimming for all ages.
