मऊ शहर लखनऊ के दक्षिण-पूर्व से 282 किलोमीटर और आजमगढ़ के पूर्व से 56 किलोमीटर की दूरी पर स्थित है। यह शहर तमसा नदी (टोंस नदी) के किनारे बसा है। तमसा नदी शहर के उत्तर से निकलती है। मऊ एक औद्योगिक शहर है।
मऊ में क्या प्रसिद्ध है?
यहाँ एक गयासुर नाम का तालाब है। इसका महत्व गया पुण्यक्षेत्र में फाल्गु नदी तटपर स्थित विष्णुपद के बराबर माना जाता है। यहाँ पर श्रद्धालु पितृपक्ष में पिण्ड दान करते हैं। ऐसा कहा जाता है कि नहुष के शासन काल में गयासुर नामक राक्षस का बध इसी स्थल पर किया गया था।
कब्जे को लेकर मऊ नट एवं मलिक बंधुओं के बीज भीषण युद्ध हुआ,जिसमें मऊ नट का भंजन(मारा गया) हुआ और इस क्षेत्र को मऊ नट भंजन कहा गया जो कालान्तर में मऊनाथ भंजन हो गया। मऊनाथ भंजन के इस नामकरण को लेकर भी कई विचार है। कुछ विद्वान इसे संस्कृत शब्द ''मयूर'' का अपभ्रंश मानते ह, तो कुछ इसे टर्की भाषा का शब्द मानते हैं।

History of Lahiri Baba

Shyama Charan Lahiri (30 September 1828 – 26 September 1895), best known as Lahiri Mahasaya, was an Indian yogi, guru and a disciple of the Kriya Yoga master Mahavatar Babaji. In 1861, he was chosen by his guru to revive the yogic science of Kriya Yoga to the public after centuries of its guarding by masters. He was unusual among Indian holy people in that he was a householder: marrying, raising a family, and working as a government accountant, he lived with his family in Varanasi rather than in a temple or monastery. Throughout his life, he spread Kriya naturally and rarely sponsored any organizations; nonetheless, his pious living attracted followers, and he became the guru of many advanced Kriya disciples, such as Panchanan Bhattacharya and Swami Sri Yukteswar Giri. For his exceptional lifestyle as an Ideal yogi-householder, he became a spiritually inspirational figure and achieved a substantial reputation among 19th century Hindu religionists.

The temple was founded by the two sons of Shri Madan Mohan Dutta - Rashiklal Dutta and Jawaharlal Dutta in1794, The temple is 226 years old.The majority of the properties in the area was once belonged to the Dutta family of Hatkhola.The temple sculptor was Sri Gadadhar Das. Built in the Aatchala style of Bengal temple architecture ,prevailing in bengal in 18th and 19th century.the structure is indeed a massive one and not many temples of this size exist in KOLKATA. Length of this aatchala mandir is about 24ft , breadth is about 29ft and height is almost 50ft. The temple facade was once decorated with Terracotta works and artistic creation in Pankha style.
The temple opens in the morning at 4.30am to till 12 noon. And it again opens at 4pm in the evening.The main mass attraction is the arati of Durgeshwar Mota Mahadev every evening after 8pm , Shivlingam is decorated with flowers very beautifully before evening arati.
From the Ahiritola -Jorabagan crossing, Nimtalla Ghat Street starts, extended towards the Hooghly river in the west and ends meeting The Stand road, just before the Circular railway track.At the junction .the stands Niyamatullah mosque on the right. Beside the mosque ,a narrow lane is there . Take a walk into the lane from Nimtalla Ghat street and the Durgeshwar temple will be on your left.
