Napoli and Beyond - Italy Travel Documentary

Napoli is one of Europe’s most diverse and fascinating cities, and an intriguing place to travel to. Often misunderstood, this Italian city has some of the country’s most beautiful architecture, ancient historic sites, delicious food, interesting traditions, and a friendly, welcoming people. Located in the Southern Campania region, Napoli (or Naples) has a very different character from most other Italian cities.

In this travel documentary, I’m exploring the streets of Napoli and its surroundings. From the buzzing, narrow alleys of the old city center to the grand churches and cathedrals. From historic palaces and castles to mysterious underground tunnels. And from ancient archaeological sites under the shadow of Mount Vesuvius to one of Italy’s most beautiful stretches of coastline.

The video was made in March 2023 when I had the chance to travel to Naples and surroundings for 12 days.

Here’s a brief overview of the content in this video:

We start our journey in the old city center of Naples, with its charismatic narrow streets and vibrant markets. This is the beating heart of Napoli, where much of daily life takes place outdoors. After introducing some of the city’s history and culture, I take a food tour around these same streets, going beyond the city’s most famous dish (Margarita pizza). I also try my hand at making pasta myself, with a cooking course that dives deeper into culinary and family life in the region.

You find espresso bars and cafes all over Napoli, but perhaps the most famous one doubles as a shrine to Diego Maradona. This famous football player has received a saint-like status, and you will see his face all around the city. The city’s stadium is also named after him.

While religion plays an important role in society, Neapolitans have a long-standing tradition of mixing Catholic faith with a combination of rituals, legends, myths, and miracles. I dive a little deeper into this, and also visit some of the city’s most interesting churches, like the Duomo Cathedral and the Chiesa del Gesu Nuovo.

The architecture in Napoli resembles the city’s rich and diverse history, and walking through the different neighborhoods almost feels like time traveling. From cloisters and monasteries to forts and palaces, you can find yourself in a different era at every corner of the street.

I also explore the city’s charming coastline, with small fishing ports, hidden beaches, tranquil boulevards, and many restaurants. It’s a pleasant contrast to the hustle and bustle of downtown. Don’t miss the metro stations, which are an attraction of their own, displaying art and design that could be part of a museum. Finally, I also visit three of the impressive underground tunnels and/or cities, the Bourbon Tunnels, San Gennaro’s Catacombs, and Napoli Sotterranea.

In the second part of the video, I explore some of the most important sights around Napoli, starting with the impressive, yet fearful, Mount Vesuvius. This volcano is one of the most active in the world. Its most violent (and well known) eruption was in 79AD, which devastated Roman cities like Pompeii and Herculaneum. Interestingly, both these places are well preserved (due to a layer of volcanic ash and pumice that ‘protected’ much of the sites).

After visiting those, we explore the coastline, with the charming villages and imposing mountains of the Amalfi coast, including the towns of Sorrento, Positano, and Amalfi. This is also one of Italy’s most popular holiday destinations. I finish this journey on the attractive island of Procida, which is less visited by tourists than the 2 bigger islands in the region. It’s full of historic buildings, scenic vistas, black sand beaches, and a laidback atmosphere.

NTV (Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori) began operating Italian high-speed trains on the Milan-Florence-Rome-Naples route in April 2012.
In 2013, NTV added a Venice-Bologna-Florence-Rome-Naples route and expanded services to Turin and Salerno.
They added a Turin-Milan-Verona-Venice route in 2017, and they now have a 35% market share on these key high-speed rail routes.
Europe's first private high-speed train operator, NTV has grown the market, raised standards, and kept prices low.
I highly recommend it...

Places to see in ( Naples - Italy ) Quartieri Spagnoli

Bustling Quartieri Spagnoli is a commercial hub skirted by Via Toledo, a part-pedestrian street lined with mainstream and designer fashion stores. Trattorias and food stalls selling fried pizza are scattered nearby. As well as several churches, like the 16th-century Santa Maria della Mercede a Montecalvario, the area houses the entrance to Napoli Sotterranea, an underground network of tunnels and catacombs.

Quartieri Spagnoli (Spanish Quarters) is a part of the city of Naples in Italy. The Neapolitan language is stronger here than anywhere else. It is a poor area, suffering from high unemployment and strong influence of Camorra. The area, encompassing c. 800,000 square metres, consists of a grid of around eighteen streets by twelve, including a population of some 14,000 inhabitants.

The Quartieri were created in the 16th century to house Spanish garrisons, hence the name, whose role was to quench revolts from the Neapolitan population. Soon they became an infamous quarter with a high rate of criminality and prostitution.

Among the historic churches in the district are:

Church of the Immacolata Concezione e Purificazione di Maria de' nobili in Montecalvario
Church of San Carlo alle Mortelle
Church of San Mattia
Church of Santa Maria della Concezione a Montecalvario
Church of Santa Maria della Lettera
Church of Santa Maria della Mercede a Montecalvario
Church of Santa Maria Francesca delle Cinque Piaghe
Church of Sant'Anna di Palazzo
Church of Santa Maria del Rosario a Portamedina
Church of Santa Maria della Concordia
Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie a Toledo
Convent and church of Santa Maria dello Splendore
Church of Santa Maria Ognibene
Church of Santa Teresella degli Spagnoli
Church of the Trinità dei Pellegrini
Church of the Santissima Trinità degli Spagnoli

Places to see in ( Naples - Italy ) Vomero

Places to see in ( Naples - Italy ) Vomero

On a hilltop accessed by funicular, upscale and leafy Vomero is dotted with gelaterias, alfresco cafes and refined Italian restaurants. Chain and department stores cluster around Piazza Vanvitelli. The Certosa e Museo di San Martino has frescoes, paintings and sculpture in a former monastery with a baroque church, while star-shaped Castel Sant’Elmo fortress has expansive views over the city and Gulf of Naples.

Vomero is a central district of Naples, with a population of about 48,000. Vomero is a hilly and heavily urbanized area in the center of Naples, is inhabited by the wealthy middle class. To the north, Vomero borders the quarter of Arenella, to the west; Soccavo and Fuorigrotta, to the south; Chiaia, to the east; Montecalvario and to the north east; Avvocata.

The name probably derives from its ancient agricultural function and from the word vomere (ploughshare). Due to the field work done here, the area for centuries was nicknamed Hill of Broccoli.
Nowadays Vomero is a residential zone that has conserved little from this rural past. Since the beginning of the 20th century the area has had a dramatic increase in residential housing.

During this period, numerous dwellings were built around Villa Floridiana, Castel Sant'Elmo and San Martino, including villas in the late Art Nouveau style and large apartment houses for the upper middle class. Nevertheless, there are still historic buildings near the above-named monuments, such as the Villa del Pontano and an old building of the Bourbon customs office. Both are situated in the neighbourhood of Antignano, one of the most popular and oldest of Vomero. After the Second World War the quarter began to expand to the hill of Camaldoli.

The new underground train system has contributed to speed up the public transport system and to ease traffic congestion in the last few years. It now connects Vomero with the city centre and the northern suburban quarters.

Napoli | Naples 4K | Campania | Italy

Naples boasts the title of the third largest city in Italy and is also the capital of Campania. The name of the city comes from the Greek nea polis, which means new city. The city of Naples grew up in the south of Italy many years ago in the Gulf of Naples, in one of the most beautiful bays in Italy near Pompeii.
