Switzerland is full of beautiful cities! They are urban, vibrant and very happening. Although Switzerland is a small country, the diversity among the cities is very noticeable. The architecture, the art and the culture differ a lot from city to city. You will find the cities of Switzerland by the river, lake or even in the valleys. Each city has its unique appearance as well as its hotspots and attractions of where to go to.
Sion is the capital of the very touristy canton of Valais (Wallis). Interestingly, Sion is only little known but ranks easily among the most beautiful cities of Switzerland. Sion feels like being in Italy but is a French-speaking city. Sion is vibrant, full of street art and also a foodie hub. The most remarkable however are the two castles up on the hills. Lugano is the largest city of Ticino in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland. Lugano lays by the lake, surrounded by the Swiss Alps, and one can feel that Italy is quite near. Lugano charms with its many alleys, culture, lake promenade and its view points. The best view over the surrounding and the city of Lugano you can get at the Monte Brè or Monte San Salvatore. Basel is the hub for the pharmaceutical industry. Basel is an old city and full of culture. It’s important to explore the many alleys with their colorful houses, see the red city hall, the minster and cross the bridges. Basel has a strong connection to its traditions. Important to mention here are the Vogelgryff and the Morgestraich. Bern is the federal city (capital) of Switzerland and the only town that is considered UNESCO world heritage. Very typical for Bern are the many arcades and the fountains. Bern’s old city is really a highlight, thus make sure to spend here at least half a day. Neuchâtel is in the French-speaking part of Switzerland, a town that feels Mediterranean and sort of French/Italian. The highlight of Neuchâtel are the lake promenade, the graffiti alley and the collegiate church with the castle. Schaffhausen is probably the largest and best preserved old city in Switzerland. Schaffhausen’s old town charms with its colorful houses and oriel windows (balcony windows). Schaffhausen is easy to explore by walk it’s pretty much car-free. The best things to do in and around Schaffhausen are a visit to the Museum zu Allerheiligen, walking at the Vordergasse alley, going up to the Munot and seeing the nearby Rhinefalls. The Munot is a centre for culture and hosts various events. Zurich is the largest city in all of Switzerland. It’s the hub for innovation and business but at the same time is a very touristy destination. Zurich’s old city concentrates around the Limmat quay. Walk along the river Limmat, enter the many protestant churches or head up to the Lindenhof and Polyterrase to enjoy a great vista over the old city of Zurich. Zurich is modern but also very cultural; the major event being the Sechseläuten festival. Fribourg is a city on two levels. The old city of perfectly preserved and thus great to explore. Ascend the church tower of the St. Nicolas cathedral or the Loretta chapel to enjoy a brilliant vista. Fribourg city has also some similarities with Luxemburg. Solothurn is the most beautiful baroque city of Switzerland. The old town is full of beautiful houses and concentrates around the river Aare. The major landmark is the St. Urseren Cathedral that offers you a great view from its tower. Lucerne is no doubt the most beautiful of the Top 10 Swiss Cities. Lucerne has been a favorite for many tourists since it offers so many great things such as a charming river promenade along the Reuss, a great view over Lake Lucerne (Vierwaldstättersee) and the Swiss Alps and otherwise seems very inviting with its alleys and painted houses. Lucerne’s best attractions are the Jesuitenkirche, Gletschergarten museum and many more. Explore Lucerne on the water by taking a boat ride or head up to Mount Pilatus to get a perfect vista over the Swiss Alps and this old city.

Aarau, the capital of the Canton of Aargau, is located on the River Aare to which the town and canton owe their name.
Aarau is located by the southern foot of the Jura foothills in the centre of the big city triangle of Zurich, Basel and Lucerne. The central location was recognised early on which is why Aarau for a brief few months in 1798 was Switzerland's first capital and home to Switzerland's first Houses of Parliament.
The charming old town boasts the most beautiful eaves, the so-called «Dachhimmel» which predominantly date from the 16th century when the town underwent considerable extension, are a special feature of the old town of Aarau. It's for this reason that Aarau is regarded as the town of beautiful gables.
Aarau continues to display an appreciation of art: the Aargau Art Museum featuring an extension designed by the famous architects Herzog & de Meuron offers architecture and art exhibitions setting high standards. The «Naturama», Aargau nature museum, is not your run-of-the-mill museum: animals, plants, exciting video films highlight the interaction and areas of conflict between nature and man in Aargau.
The Roggenhausen Wildlife Park has wild animals in their natural habitat as well as a Nature Trail. Cycling and walking trails alongside the River Aare and the Jura slopes provide the perfect opportunity for some pleasant physical exercise. But to see the people of Aargau really enjoying themselves you need to come to one of the local and historic traditional events, such as the «Maienzug» in July, the «Bachfischet» or «Rüeblimärt».
The Canton of Aargau boasts a great many castles, including some of Switzerland's most impressive such as the Lenzburg, the Hallwyl Water Castle and the Habsburg Castle - main residence of the famous dynasty from the the 10th century onwards. And Brugg, Baden and Zurich are a very short journey away. The Vindonissa Museum offers an opportunity to discover traces of the Romans and Windish is home to the biggest and best-preserved amphitheatre in Switzerland. And there are also a lot of historic towns, such as Bremgarten, Zofingen and others, to visit in the Canton of Aargau.

Aarau, Switzerland, where Albert Einstein started his career
Founded about 1240 by the Counts of Kyburg, picturesque Aarau, Switzerland, with a population of around 16,000, lies on the River Aare at the foot of the southern slopes of the Jura mountains. The town’s central location, within easy travelling distance of Basel, Bern, Lucerne and Zurich makes it an ideal meeting point and it has a variety of thriving industries. It is also known as the town of beautiful gables thanks to its colourful baroque-style buildings with painted gable roofs. Aarau is also a town of outdoor activity and culture see below), as well as hosting several traditional festivals such as the Maienzug (May Day Procession) and Rueblimärt (Carrot Festival).
The great physicist Einstein lived in Switzerland between 1895 and 1919, and his time in Aarau, though short (1895-6), is well recorded in the town. The house Einstein lived in for that year has a plaque identifying it, and there is a square named after him; both are shown in the film. He attended the Kantonschule in Aarau (also featured in the movie) because he wanted to be a teacher of Mathematics, and he had surprisingly failed the exam to get on the course at the Polytechnikum in Zürich. After a year at the Kantonsschule in Aarau he was successful and returned to Zürich for his teacher training.
Explore the old town (Altstadt). Go to the Aargauer Kunsthaus art museum, the Naturama museum of natural history, or learn about the town’s history at the Schlössli Museum.
Visit the Roggenhausen Wildlife Park to see animals in their natural habitat, and go on a Nature Trail.
Walk or cycle along the River Aare on trails provided for the purpose.
Swim and play at Freibad Schachen water park.
Visit the Vindonissa Museum to learn about the Romans.
Visit one or more of the castles in the area, such as Lenzburg Castle, Hallwyl Water Castle, and Habsburg Castle.
Seek out the house where Albert Einstein lived and the school he attended for a year, and have a coffee in Einsteinplatz.
Take the family to the bizarre Käpten Jo’s Aafähre, which is in the shape of a boat and is so much more than a restaurant!
For nightlife, go to the Jugendkulturhaus Flosserplatz.
Finding the right accommodation actually in Aarau town is not easy. If you want a four-star hotel right in Aarau, about the only option is the Best Western Plus Hotel Storchen on Oltnerstrasse, but if you are willing to travel a better idea might be to stay at Seerose Resort and Spa, 11 miles (18km) out of town. In the 3-star category, the Sorell Hotel Aarauerhof and the Sorrell Hotel Argovia are both within walking distance from the town centre. The nearest hostels are 23 miles (37km) away in Zurich, where you find Langstars Backpacker Hostel on Aussersihl, or 8 miles (12km) away at Zofingen at the Youth Hostel Zofingen.

Aarau , is a medium-sized town and municipality in the Swiss canton of Aargau . It is the capital of this canton and at the same time of the district of Aarau . The city is 39 kilometers south-east of Basel , 38 km west of Zürich , 67 km north-east of Bern (both as the crow flies) and is part of Northwestern Switzerland .
The city on the right bank of the Aare lies on the northern edge of the Swiss Mittelland and at the transition to the Jura Mountains. The western city limits also form the border with the canton of Solothurn . Aarau has over 21,000 inhabitants, making it the most populous municipality in the canton. Around 80,000 people live in the narrow agglomeration and a good 220,000 in the Aarau economic area.
Founded between 1240 and 1250 by the Counts of Kyburg, Aarau received city rights from the Habsburgs in 1283 . From 1415 Aarau was a subject city of Bern and after the introduction of the Reformation in 1528 one of the meeting places of the Confederation. From March to September 1798, the first year of the Helvetic Republic , Aarau was the first capital of Switzerland. Aarau has been the capital of the canton since 1803 and has fulfilled numerous central local functions as an important administrative, commercial and service center ever since. In 2010, the neighboring pipe was incorporated.
Sights include the Schlössli , today part of the Aarau City Museum and the Upper Tower from the 13th century, the late Gothic town church , the town hall and the old town with baroque gabled houses and late Gothic rows of houses.

#Aarau is a town, a municipality, and the capital of the northern Swiss canton of #Aargau.
A few artifacts from the Neolithic period were found in Aarau. Near the location of the present train station, the ruins of a settlement from the #Bronze Age (about 1000 BC) have been excavated. The Roman road between Salodurum (Solothurn) and Vindonissa passed through the area, along the route now covered by the Bahnhofstrasse. In 1976 divers in the Aare found part of a seven-meter wide wooden bridge from the late Roman times.
On 27 December 1797, the last Tagsatzung of the Old Swiss Confederacy was held in Aarau. Two weeks later a French envoy continued to foment the revolutionary opinions of the city. The contrast between a high level of education and a low level of political rights was particularly great in Aarau, and the city refused to send troops to defend the Bernese border. By Mid-March #1798 Aarau was occupied by French troops.
The buildings in the old city originate, on the whole, from building projects during the 16th century, when nearly all the Middle Age period buildings were replaced or expanded. The architectural development of the city ended in the 18th century, when the city began to expand beyond its (still existing) wall. Most of the buildings in the suburb date from this time.
